#BreakingNews DRDO to abandon Kaveri project.

Yes given up on turbofan engine.

Now something much smaller. In the end that too will be cancelled.Maybe turboprop is next?

Yeah, the turbofan engine will become obsolete in the next 20 years, so better to focus on the coming scramjet/ramjet engines.

Since we also don't really care how the US keeps bragging about their turbofan engine, because we know this technology will not last in the next 20-30 years.

Well 20-30 years is a long period. I can't say much except UCAV will be somewhat mainstream combat aircraft.

Regarding engine tech if a country fails at basic turbofan unlikely the country can focus on scram/ram jet engines. Possible but unlikely. At the end of the day Kaveri has been scrapped and WS series is on planes which are flying with mixed results. However J-10 is single engined and using WS-10 means WS-10 can power a plane into flight but perhaps not combat as of now but soon. Kaveri sadly could never cross stage of being one of the 4 engines on a russian test bed il-76.

What madness is this!

See that amount proposed to be pumped into GTRE

This time we must ensure they are held accountable

Overhaul GTRE

This 'ambitious project' reference could be AMCA?

.
DRDO has already moved a file recently seeking the closure of the ambitious engine development project undertaken by Bengaluru-based Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE).

Signal term for, oh oh now we getting a lot of DRDO BS!

GTRE has spent so far Rs 2,106 crore on the project so far and could only fly the engine for 73 hours on the IL-76 Flying Test Bed (FTB) in Russia. The delay in the project saw DRDO choosing the GE 404 engine for Tejas Mk-1 and GE 414 for Tejas Mk-II...

...Sources said that the DRDO has sanctioned Rs 300 crore for GTRE to take up future projects. "The lab is gearing up to take up some futuristic projects and the sanctions have been already given. Another additional sanction of Rs 700 crore is on its way to help realize these gen-next technologies," an official said.

:hitwall::hitwall::hitwall: Height of nonsense, they badly failed the nation and wasted a lot of taxpayers money and now gets even more money rewarding them for the bad work they done?

Sources confirm that a separate proposal of Rs 2,600 crore to develop engines for an ‘ambitious project' is under consideration now. The lab has been given another Rs 70 crore for a strategic programme.http://www.oneindia.com/bengaluru/o...roject-gtre-gets-revival-package-1565505.html

And there it is again!

"Yes. These are part of the bold stand being taken by DRDO. Whereever we have found bottlenecks for long time, with no realistic solutions, it's better to move on. It is an honest stand we are taking," Tamilmani said.

You got to be kidding me, he is trying to make their failure look good! If he would be bold and honest, he would check who led the development work and fire all the leading scientists and officials right away, only then you can start over, start fresh. There must be someone that can be hold accountable for this mess!

He said world over not many countries have progressed ahead in making engines. "We have made a good start and despite the delays, proved our capabilities to our best of abilities.

What nonsese! How was it a good start to overestimate your capabilities that bad, to make LCA dependent on Kaveri engine, to fail to understand when to push the de-link button, to claim that they can develop Kaveri to other air or naval applications..., they only proved how badly they an that they are the biggest
bottleneck for India and the aero field!

.
i thought Kaveri was still going to be used in UAVs as per many posters here

Yes, that was the plan for AURA UCAV and they claimed it will be easier since it don't have to have an afterburner and requires less performance. But their promises allways needs to be taken cautiously.

.
as long as fighters can keep the air clear, turbofans wil stay.

keep chinese physics to china ! no offence..

Not the Chinese physics, since the turbofan engine will reach its theoretical limit by the end of the 6th gen aircraft.

That's why the scramjet/ramjet will become the new jet engine for the future 7th gen aircraft.

Please, don't compare Kaveri with WS-10.

The WS-10 series has already being installed on more than hundred Chinese aircrafts.

As for the J-10B, it has already been tested on several prototype for several thousand hours, which everything is fine so far.

When we are running out of AL-31FN, we will immediately start to equip J-10B with the WS-10A/B engine.

.
Well what can we say, after all it's DRDO's decision to abandon this project which has been running for nearly 2 decades now.Personally i feel that they have made a stupid decision. They should have had given more time and allocated more resources in this project as it was the first time India sought to develop an advanced Turbofan engine on it's own, mistakes were bound to happen in this kind of path breaking project but abandoning the project when it was so close to success is utter stupidity:tsk:

.
They are coming up with improved design and new name. So it will not be a 30 year old project any more.4000 cr sought for new projects.

.
Congrats!!! Divert the funds to space technologies - in future world have to fight with aliens until than buy more rafael as stop gap.

any news or idea of the type of new engine ?

.
See, there's the rub. Even if you give the engine to a private company, there is nothing they can learn about designing a new engine. If there is a brain drain from GTRE to private companies, then that private company could be the new GTRE. But that would leave us with no GTRE. Retired scientists are unlikely of much use, unless they were involved right up to the last moment. To have more than one company trying to build an engine, we will need to increase our talent pool of aviation scientists and engineers. It can be done, but it can't be done overnight.

Anyway the good thing at this point is that Kaveri is not absolutely critical to any other project. Earlier the Tejas program was dependant on it, and that dependancy caused inordinate delays to the Tejas program as well. Our next project, the AMCA will not start for a while.

A private company will operate outside the limitations of GTRE. It will be more expensive but it will be faster, there will be focus on result and they will have the flexibility to hire experts from all over the world rather than rely on engineers who has NEVER built an engine in their lives. The ONLY way we can increase our talent pool in tie is ti bring in foreign experts. Private companies and private universities can do that FAR more efficiently than any govt. organization.

There is no comparison between the two.

.
And people still believe what that loud mouth Saras*whatever* says.

DRDO will soon announce designs of ships that are capable of inter galactic travel.

.
Wonderful news .

Its time for private players to grab this opportunity to forge ties with GE, Rolls royce ,pratt and whitney and likes and develop a brand new one.
