#BreakingNews DRDO to abandon Kaveri project.

If i am not getting it wrong then the "Kaveri" is closed but other (much bigger) jet/turbine engine projects are being sanctioned ... just by looking at the sums of money being sanctioned. Also if my memory serves me right, DRDO did have a breakthrough in single crystal blade manufacturing few weeks/month back. So as I think they are just closing a, now defunct, project and investing in a new better project and not just closing GTRE altogether...

As DG DRDO Tamilmani has said no point waiting if bottlenecks cannot be cleared.

Domestic engine is a comprehensive failure as expected. Same fate has to logically befall the 45 year old LCA project

Closing GTRE,seriously??

DRDO to abandon Kaveri project; GTRE gets revival package

Call for auction, take some bids, and sell the tech. to Tata or Mahindra, and try to cover some tax payers money.
I don't think companies with no experience in making jet engines would be interested in buying the "tech". They can't simply read a bunch of papers or examine the engine and learn anything. The knowledge base that was built up so far is mostly in the heads of the scientists and engineers, the learning process they went through. The best way to salvage something from this situation is to put their experience and accumulated knowledge to good use and utilize them in the next attempt. And hopefully this time they won't try to bite off more than they can chew.

i think they only shelving present kaveri project [k9/k9+].... developing the indigenous will continue[ k10] may be with new design new thrust....

Yes, we will have to start working on a new one. Hopefully this time the sailing will be smooth, because we have some experience with Kaveri.

I have one opinion. If I am right they have built 9 prototypes of Engine and 4 cores have been developed. Gift 4 of them to any serious Indian Company which is interested in venturing in Aerospace business. You said that the knowledge is in the head of the scientists, right. Now there will always be retd. scientists who would like to get hired and share their knowledge. A new company can start functioning with their help.

Also have some type of competition between them and GTRE/DRDO for a new Engine (I am sure Govt. will announce package for a new engine development soon). So that we can have at least two options or more!!

Great decision.

Now revamp GTRE staff before pumping in that money.

sell 25 % stake in GTRE to a private company. throw in tax soaps. we'll see a new engine in it's due time.

good decision. this is what decisiveness is about..

Could it be that now the engine is so near to maturation that BJP wants to take credit for the success, so a new name with the same core, and the whole credit goes to the minister who sanctioned it. Just saying :big_boss:

See, there's the rub. Even if you give the engine to a private company, there is nothing they can learn about designing a new engine. If there is a brain drain from GTRE to private companies, then that private company could be the new GTRE. But that would leave us with no GTRE. Retired scientists are unlikely of much use, unless they were involved right up to the last moment. To have more than one company trying to build an engine, we will need to increase our talent pool of aviation scientists and engineers. It can be done, but it can't be done overnight.

Anyway the good thing at this point is that Kaveri is not absolutely critical to any other project. Earlier the Tejas program was dependant on it, and that dependancy caused inordinate delays to the Tejas program as well. Our next project, the AMCA will not start for a while.

.
So GTRE has got $50 million to explore new technologies and $120 million to help realise them.

No more engine drama.
