Army Public School (APS) Peshawar attack has deeply impacted the nation, giving us the wounds that can never be healed. However, you don’t necessarily have to be a Pakistani to feel the pain. As long as you are a human and your heart beats, you can feel the desperation and helplessness.

Bollywood icon Farhan Akhtar, after a reputable career in the acting industry, has released his first ever music album with the name ‘Echoes’. The artist says that what compelled him to go for playback singing was the impact and power it has.

The icon recorded the album Collivo’s Studio in Milan. The album is a collection of different phases of his life and his journey towards self-discovery – so it is unique and distinctive, of course.

He also wrote one of the songs remembering the victims of APS Peshawar attack. He recalled a particular incident that touched him where mother of one of the martyrs told that one of her sons pretended he was sick and did not go to the school that day while the older one did. The one who faked illness and stayed home was alive, while the older sibling lost his life in the attack. The song is titled ‘Why Couldn’t It Be Me’.

On 16 December 2014 Taliban gunmen stormed the Army Public School in the northern city of Peshawar. More than 150 people were killed, 132 of them children. Most of them were the age 12-16. After the Peshawar attack, I read an article about a mother whose younger son hadn’t gone to school that day because he’d pretended to be sick. But his older sibling went to school and had been killed in the massacre. ‘Why Couldn’t It Be Me’ is a song about the loss of innocence and childhood in an adults war. – Farhan wrote, speaking about the song, on his Instagram.

He added that one does not have to be a Pakistani to feel the pain and the emotions felt after this attack were universal. He said music gave him a stage to voice them. Commenting on Pak-India relationships, as reported by a local news source, Farhan said that it is unfortunate to see how art is affected by politics. He said Pakistan has a plethora of talent and they have contributed to India, and he wishes to see harmony between both countries.

“I do hope that we’re at a better place soon.” – he said.

As it should be. There was a spontaneous response, especially among school children, to this tragedy. Farhan is known as a sensitive actor and it is appropriate that this remembrance should be from him.
