People were having sex long time before marriage was invented. Marriage is important and necessary for society to provide a stable environment for children and also a safety net for both partners during life's vicissitudes, illness, financial problems etc for one or other spouse. Children brought up with both parents tend to do better. If children are not involved and you don't need a safety net, then do whatever you want so long as you don't hurt anyone else.....but don't hurt anyone else. Culture is never static, culture is supposed to serve society not the other way round. If you go back long enough ancient Indians were pretty broad minded about sex before, after or during marriage. How it changed, why it changed. Maybe one of the social historians on PDF can explain.
