US Aerospace giant Boeing recently offered to produce its legacy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jet in India with Indian air force requested changes if India selects its fighter jet after MMRCA tender was withdrawn by Ministry of defence last year.

Boeing’s offer comes with one major rider that India has to place orders for minimum 150 F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jets which are way more than 126 aircraft India had sought to purchase under MMRCA tender in the first place.

Other in the race to supply and Make in India their fighter jets like Saab with its Gripen NG and Lockheed Martin with its F-16 Block 70 also have their Minimum purchase order commitment requirements to be made by India before they can set up their production line for their jets in India said highly reliable sources close to idrw.org.

Boeing has promised better Transfer of technology of its F/A-18E/F than Saab’s offer on Gripen NG and has promised to incorporate many low observability techs like Enclosed Weapons Pod (EWP), Conformal Fuel tanks (CFT) which can classify it has Semi-Stealth aircraft.

Boeing is also offering full spherical missile warning capability, an advanced cockpit employing large area displays and internal Infrared Search-Track (IRST) system under its Advanced Super Hornet upgrade package to its existing clients. the list also includes enhanced performance versions of the General Electric F414-440 engines that boost the thrust by 20 percent.

Indian defence minister Parrikar already has confirmed that by the end of 2016 a new fighter aircraft will be selected and the selected vendor will manufacture nearly 90 fighter jets in India in partnership with Indian private defence company, Ministry of Defence is closely studying current offers and also is having back-channel talks with all vendors while keeping Indian air force in the loop in search for a new fighter jet and MOD might commit only for 90 air crafts .

not bad

in short

8X18=144 SH F/A-18 E/F (4 air force varient)+6 as twin seat backup/training

4X18=72(growler)@ 8X9 (one half squad for every SH squad )

still save money deu to comminality in engine and sub systems & weapons package with LCA

.
Boeing in short wants to use India as a market to keep 18s alive.. What will you do with internal weapons bay for a 4th Gen jet.. Will it evade AD network and deliver the package deep into enemy territory?

The numbers have come down from 200 to 150 but how will US Congress allow transfer of technology to India. These technologies can we incorporate and use in other projects like LCA and AMCA?

Instead of always painting that Technology transfer will be done, why dont they explain what realistic contribution they can do for our indigenous programs?? The answer we all know... NONE

why US is not offering F-15 ( silent eagle) !!
Silent eagle is a dead project.

Also, India has no need for the F-15. and the Su-30MKI fulfills the same role. It would just be a waste of money.
--------

I highly doubt that India is going to buy legacy fighters, when it's near future plans would pretty much make them a waste of cash. From what I understand, the MMRCA was suppose to be a stopgap for the eventual FGFA, which is why India was never interested in buying more than a 120 or so, in the first place.

My advice? At this point, it's a waste of money buying even a hundred Rafales, just reduce the numbers required, and sign the deal. There is no point in delaying any longer, because the longer India waits, the more pointless this entire deal will become, and the harder it will be to justify even considering the MMRCA in the first place.

On the other hand, it's good entertainment, from a Pakistani's perspective.

Daily one offer, even big bazaar has less.
Defense sharks smell blood. With Dassault and India still having difficulty with the Rafale deal, other corporations are going to try and entice India will seemingly better offers.

The Rafale was not the stop gap for the FGFA. Rafales will be replaced by the AMCA and Su-30 will be replaced by the FGFA. The Tejas will replace the lower tier of Mig 21s and such.

There is an upward revision of squadron strength. The numbers for Rafale is not 100+, its closer to 200. The numbers for Tejas are closer to 200. Reliance is going to be the partner for Dassault for the same.

The numbers cannot be filled only with the LCA and MKIs. With more than 300 Sukhois, i think we are nearing the end of their induction with round 350 sukhois as a final figure. Add at-least 200 LCAs (with all variants, MK1, MK1A and Mk2) Rafales will be at-least 170 only for the IAF. We may see couple of PakFa squadrons in the Russian config, like we had inducted the early Sukhois.

Besides this, IN will be adding Rafales and the Naval Tejas. They are also completely behind the AMCA.

With Dassault and India still having difficulty with the Rafale deal, other corporations are going to try and entice India will seemingly better offers

See the problem is, nobody in the IAF or IN want the teen series. The IN would rather order more Mig29Ks rather than the F-18. Saab is a completely no.

There has been a very prudent decision taken to not let in any foreign fighter which competes with the Tejas. That pushes out the Gripen and the F-16.

We have two options in hand, we are ignoring it and looking at a flying one.

The priority should by to raise a 21x18 squadron strong fleet of 378 mkis, don't cry about its avilability, because its our fault. The Chinese have relatively less deployment of their flankers in Tibet yet at any given time for 1 Indian Su30, they have 2 Su27s up in air. ( No one can question this, this is based upon data of over last 2 years. ). If the Chinese can keep flying their flankers..... then the mistake is on our side.
Do anything but make sure we start rolling out a ful 21 squadron each year.

Next is Tejas. Seperate Mk1, mk1a, mk2 and work on three seperately. Make sure mk1 completed its objectives and is inducted in IAF. Meanwhile keep the development of mk1a and mk2 on.

Still facing number problems, go for more Fulcrums.

F-15 vs Su-30MKI are same class it is true

Requirement of IAF doesn't set legacy or non legacy criteria but they are looking at a fighter which will have support till 2040. whichever fulfill IAF requirement & criteria will be selected and inducted.

Rafales is more prioritised because of its technology which India badly needs for its future LCA & AMCA.

what i suggest is ask US if they are willing to give full ToT without any restrictions (which is not in the nature of US) and if they say yes then simply dump Rafales & go for F-18s. As future of F-18s is more secured than Rafael.

But before ordering please combine IN & IAF requirement as IN plans to operate 3-4 ACs in future. IAF needs will be less considering 150+ FGFA + 270 Su-30s + 300 LCAs will also make a strong 40+ sq which IAF is searching for.
