BD To Seek $26 Billion From China for Power.

Good news, China has excellent tech, engineering capacity, as well as capital in power generation and transmission grid to offer Bangladesh which is fast becoming world export hub of RMG. The only concern is a China-unfriendly incumbent administration in Dhaka, wish politics doesn't obstruct economic development.
Ummm...Chinese investment in Bangladesh is at record levels atm. China-Bangladesh relations are similarly great...

Padma Bridge is being done by a Chinese company....the rail link will also be constructed by a Chinese firm.

I believe EXIM bank of China will loan $700mil at 2% interest for the Karnaphuli tunnel project.

There is absolutely nothing unfriendly about the current relationship.

There should be a railway between us, this railway will pass through Burma, but the situation in Burma is still not stable enough

@TopCat: You sound so optimistic. If it's so much money to be made why don't Europeans or Americans or your new ally India run into BD? Are they stupid?

I think China should invest this money and gain influence inside Bangladesh. The current government is increasingly turning Bangladesh into a vassal state of India*, so you guys can channel any future influence you gain towards bringing a neutral government to power.

*Meekly accepting any kind of Indian abuse and humiliation against Bangladeshi citizens (http://archive.dhakatribune.com/ban...-kills-591-bangladeshi-citizens-last-10-years, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-16625104)
*Giving India free access through its territory (http://www.nezine.com/info/Transit for India sparks debate in Bangladesh)
*Accepting terrorism originating from India (http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/2016/10/04/gulshan-attack-arms-reached-dhaka-mango-baskets/), but blaming Pakistan instead (https://defence.pk/threads/gulshan-attack-arms-came-from-bihar-india.453400/#post-8768979).

We learnt hard lessons from SL and Nepal recently that the governments tried to play a triangle balance with China and India.
Nepal and Sri Lanka is far smaller than Bangladesh to resist Indian illegal demand. Nepal is a land locked country of 25 million people dependent on India for every things. If India blockade Nepal, there will be big big trouble.Sri lanka is country of 20 million people far away from China and very dependent on India as well. So India can exert pressure to pursue anti-national policy there.

But Bangladesh is a country of 170 million people having 12 times larger economy than Nepal or 3 times of Sri Lanka. India-Bangladesh trade is only 8 percent of total trade volume of Bangladesh.Geographically Bangladesh is much more accessible from China than other south Asian countries. Dhaka is only 2 hours flight from Kunming. We can establish direct road, rail connectivity by involving Myanmar with it.We have direct access to the ocean and no one can deny China-Bangladesh economic or strategic relation. So we have much more strength to resist illegal Indian demand. So China have very few risk engaging with BD than other south Asian countries.

.
Pakistani suffered more from terrorist acts than the neighbouring countries. I was shocked to see the governments of South Asian countries supporting Indian "surgical strikes" in one way or another. Sending troops into Azad Kashmir is an act of war! I think that this is rather foolish movement because Pakistan is a nuclear armed country. You want to push Pakistan to go extreme?

I am all for a solid relationship between BD and China without context attached concerning others. However I don't believe Hasina administration think the same way.

Sheikh Hasina is much more pragmatic then the opposition in Bangladesh. It is true that she is pro-India but it is even more true that she is pro-China and pro-Russia.Look at the number of deal her govt. signed with China and Russia.India is no where near in the monitery terms. She is talking sweet and drumming 1971 Indo-Bangladesh co-operation to resolve some very critical and important bilateral issues with India. We have already seen she gained both land and maritime territory for BD at the expense of India. She is now pressing India to sign River water treaty. She is strengthing our economy and defence.Although our defence budget is not much, but she raised it from 1 billion dollar to 3 billion dollar within 7 years.

There are numerous defence deal she signed with China and Russia. And there is the bilateral trade. It is almost 11 billion dollar now with China exported 10 billion dollar worth goods in BD last year. It will certainly grow exponentially in the coming years.During her rule, trade with China increased much more rapidly than with India.I believe after resolving with major bilaterla issues with India, she will stop talking sweet to India. But it is just talk after all.

Everybody wants to maintain status quo and increase trade and commerce. We want Pakistan becomes a party to it not a spoiler to it. Pakistan needs to be realistic and works towards peace and harmony and help its neighbor to resolve terrorism instead of facilitator. We even found elements of Pakistani involvement in high profile terrorism in our country which includes the assassination attempt to our current PM who was a opposition leader that time in 2004. Hasina has every right to be anti pakistani when she knew that Pakistani ISI will try to kill her in every opportunity they will get.

Current government has very strong connection with the Chinese communist party since 1956. Your leaders are far more pragmatic than internet warrior and know the values of international relationship.

Besides south Asia is too big of a economy to be ignored by China and BD is the 2nd largest in it.

.
Well, except for Hasina rest of Awami league are left leaning politicians and pro china. And the Chinese are well aware of it. A economically stronger BD will be easily come out of India's influence. China wants that.

.
Yes, perhaps your description is more accurate. The current govt seems to have taken side in subcontinental geopolitics, which for better or worse does affect China's national interests. Hope that contemporary politics doesn't interfere with traditionally good people-to-people relationship between Bangladesh and China, let's prosper together.

There is an important development that took place During Current Govt. China replaced India as Bangladesh's main source of Import. Current Government is anti Pak- pro India thats for sure. But If asked to choose side between China and India, They will remain neutral and quiet. Knowing this China, chose to build a people to people, military to military and close trade, financial relation. By doing that they have kept the Indian Influence at bay. Bravo and Thank you.

Bangladesh wont meddle in affairs which may disturb China. The message was sent to your govt loud and clear. Now as you are just an online entity and not updated with the development what can be done. So I suggest you to not create confusion. The important things to keep in mind is that BD respects China's position in South China sea, China is the largest import partner of Bangladesh and BD is the second largest importer of Chines arms. China showed interest to be the largest development partner of BD. But this forum is an anti BD forum as BD is not in good terms with Pakistan, its on another universe from where you may be getting wrong perception. Some BD sources said they respect India has the right to defend itself against the attacking Pakistanis, it really doesnt concern you. But they were not from official sources of BD either. If India unnecessarily attacks Pakistan which may damage Chinese interests, BD wont ever support.

DHAKA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China and Bangladesh on Sunday agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation during a meeting between visiting Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan and Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid.

Bangladesh and China have long been working closely in various fields and the cooperation has yielded fruitful results, said the Bangladeshi president.

Bangladesh has always stood together with China on issues concerning China's core interests and international affairs. The country also firmly supports the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, said Hamid, adding Bangladesh is willing to have sincere collaboration with China as the two countries jointly promote regional prosperity and development.

He expressed hope that the two armies would maintain the current positive momentum of cooperation and enhance cooperation and exchanges in all areas and levels so as to contribute to the development of bilateral ties.

For his part, the Chinese defense minister said China and Bangladesh has witnessed healthy and stable development in exchanges and cooperation in various fields since the two countries established diplomatic relations 41 years ago.

China is willing to work together with relevant countries, including Bangladesh, to actively promote the Belt and Road Initiative and the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor, to bring tangible development benefits to the people of the countries and advance regional peace and stability, said Chang.

Friendly cooperation between the two armies has grown steadily and rapidly in recent years, with frequent high-level visits, continuously deepening pragmatic cooperation and fruitful cooperation on personnel training, the minister said.

He expressed hope that the two armies would earnestly implement the important consensus reached between leaders of the two countries and strengthen friendly cooperation to provide strong support and guarantee to bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Chang also elaborated on China's position and propositions on the South China Sea issue.

The Bangladeshi president said his country firmly supports China's position on the South China Sea issue and believes the disputes should be resolved through direct negotiation and consultation by parties concerned.

I thought the current government has better ties with India. How will Indian policy makers will see this?
With tons of happiness.

The more Bangladesh develops, the more India benefits. We want an arc of prosperity in India, BD, Myanmar, Thailand.

The other member got it right - we'll be happier if Chinese funded some of our major infrastructural endeavours as well ;)

You made your points.

As far as I'm aware China and Bangladesh have a very good relationship. China is BD's biggest development partner and funding tons of projects. China probably sees BD as a future major ally in Asia.

Unlike some other country, Bangladesh isn't tied to one country. They don't make ties with China and break them with India and America.
