A clash has broken out between student protesters calling for safer roads and Awami League activists in Jigatala, near the party’s offices in Dhanmondi.

The clashes began on Saturday afternoon. A group of men wearing motorcycle helmets—some of them armed—arrived later on the scene and clashed with the students. A bdnews24.com reporter saw two motorbikes going up in flames after an arson attack.

Earlier, a confrontation took place between the students, who are holding citywide protests, and Awami League activists in front of the party president’s offices at Dhanmondi 3/A around 2pm.

“The trouble started when a group of the protesting students went towards the party offices,” a tea vendor toldbdnews24.com.

“The students suddenly began moving towards the Jigatala intersection. The Awami League activists blocked them. An argument broke out when the students refused to stop. The students began marching towards the offices as they chanted slogans when the party activists chased them off.”

Witnesses said the students had begun moving in that direction after rumours spread that a protester had been held by Awami League activists.

When the reporter arrived at the location, the students had retreated towards Shimanto Square. When they attempted to press forward they were again chased off by Awami League activists.

The students then retreated to the Star Kebab restaurant on Dhanmondi-2.

Around 5pm, a group of the helmeted men were seen throwing brickbats at the students who gathered by Star Kebab. The reporter saw one of them discharge a firearm.

Some of the students were throwing brickbats at the attackers and had makeshift weapons in their hands

Those BCL bast**s will change side if new govt comes to power. And beside those mofos i wish every AL scums will get their portion of punishment. Specially Sahajahan, Qader, Nahid, Joy and Hasina. After what happened today in Zigatola i have no anger on those trolls in this forum like Nilgiri, Sakra, Imran , El Sidd and others. This country is actually fucked up, rotten to core. Anybody who escapes to western world is safer than us. At least two spot dead (saw the photo, can't share here), 4 presumed raped (saw one brother crying for his sister), several seriously injured. Still people got killed in road accident in Mogbazar, Badda. I wish India or Pakistan nuke the whole country to stone age. This country has no future if a new party full of educated, strong and young people with vision don't come to power.
Welcome to my world....

Authorities slow mobile internet to quell student protests
The latest step came hours after violent clashes between students and Awami League activists left some people injured in Dhaka’s Jigatala on Saturday afternoon.

Mobile operators have been instructed to reduce the internet speed to 1.28 kbps, telecom officials with knowledge of the instruction from the authorities told bdnews24.com.

Mobile users also complained that they faced outages of 3G and 4G services.

The operators moved to implement the instruction in the evening, a telecom official said on the condition of anonymity.

The official could not say how long the instruction will remain in force.

Users will find it hard to post pictures on the social media with the speed of 1.28 kbps.

“No such instruction was given. The internet is working fine,” Jahurul Haque, acting chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, told bdnews24.com.

The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested actress and model Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed on charges of spreading rumours on Facebook about “attacks on student protesters”.

Nawshaba was arrested in Dhaka’s Uttara around 10:30pm on Saturday, RAB spokesman Mufti Mahmud Khan told bdnews24.com.

She was seen on Facebook urging people to “save the students from attacks” and making false claims that two students were killed.

In her 1.37-minute live broadcast on Facebook, Nawshaba also falsely claimed that the attackers gouged out a student’s eyes.

She urged her Facebook friends and followers to “step in and save the children from unsafe conditions”.

Her comments are believed to have played a role in the street battle that followed between safe-road campaigners and Awami League activists in Dhaka’s Jigatala on Saturday afternoon.

Before her arrest, bdnews24.com contacted Nawshaba to verify her claims and she said she had not seen anything with her “own eyes”.

With the street protests going violent for the first time since Jul 29, the Jigatala neighbourhood turned into a battleground.

A new front opened after a group of men wearing motorcycle helmets—some of them armed—arrived on the scene and clashed with the students. The battle lasted several hours.

The Jigatala episode opened a new phase in the otherwise peaceful student campaign and drew quick reactions from the Awami League. The ruling party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader asserted that a political foul play found its way into the non-political protests.

The more the BAL government reacts and do repressions the more the people and students will come out to the streets to protest the moves. Students should encircle the Secretariate to make the administration inactive.

RAB will certainly not arrest me for proposing above. @UKBengali

Student protesters say they have been misled by rumours that some of them were confined by the Awami League activists.

The rumours sparked violent clashes between the student protesters and Awami League activists in front of the party president’s offices in Dhanmondi on Saturday and the clashes lasted several hours.

Later in the evening, some AL activists spoke to the students and asked them to visit the party president’s offices.

Some protesters escorted by the police checked out the entire building. The students then held an instant news briefing there.

“Some people suddenly came after midday prayers and said four girls and several boys were confined to the Awami League president’s office. Later, some of us marched toward the Awami League office,” said Kazi Ashikur Rahman Turjo, a student of Dhaka Ideal College.

“But we found nothing in the Awami League’s office.”

Emerging from the news briefing, Turjo told the protesters that the information about confinement was a rumour. “Never pay heed to the rumours.”
