Sub in three years? Seems quite unrealistic, considering all the defence purchases made in the recent years.

Most probably because china is on the process of decommissioning 3 improved ming class sub at the moment!! Thats what prompted BN to go for this type of Sub within 2016 instead of 2019. But why on earth they are taking training from Turkey when type 209 is out of the card??

I really dont want ming class sub in our navy. It is good for a training sub. But i really doubt its combat capability due to its age. IMO song or yuan class would have been better.

Maybe we signed some kind of defence MOU, allowing us to train with their subs, when their representatives came to visit us.

Why submarine needs 420 acre of land. It suppose to stay offshore!!!

The Turkish one kobiraaz referred is an area of 1800 acres though it's a complete Naval Base. Along with submarine base probably it'll serve other Naval base facilities.

with the bad news a good news for country . we were hopping to get romeo class sub back in 1990 but that dream didn't materialized . last twenty years every govt. have pledge to form strong armed force three dimensional Navy but nothing got momentum . Now it seems we can hope to induct sum modern hardware in our inventory. May be at fast we will get some junky sub yet something is better then nothing .

As far as I remember submarine talk with Turkey 1st took place 15/17 (or more) years ago, it didn't materialize ever. It was regarding submarine procurement and training. Probably this is the reason for taking training from Turkey.

nah, but then they wanted to buy type 209! So sending officers to turkey made sense by that time. But now they are getting chinese sub but still sending to turkey? And the article seems correct as they even mentioned the name of the naval base. Its like you are buying Mig29 but training on F16

He He!! I know. Indians might have to turn down the sensitivity of their sonar so as to not ruin their equipment every time BDs will be taking their submarine out for a joy ride

It's like you're going to induct fighter, so you're sending your personnel to A who already has reputation on this field. And later if you procure fighter P from B, simply you'll send your personnel to B to have P specific training.

As submarine is going to be one new section in BN, the introductory training will be provided by Turkey because they have vast experience on this section. Later if BN procures Chinese sub say Song class, BN personnel will go to China to have Song specific training.

Its a submarine built in the 1960's. China has 30 of them all used for training purpose. They are basically obsolete. It wont be hard to imagine if they offered us one free if we buy two of them

Sub base should be in a place which is out of busy shipping lane and away from major commercial/tourist centers. Reported site for sub base in Kutubia Channel is

• Close to Cox's Bazar major tourist center.
• Next to busy shipping lane of proposed deep sea port in Sonadia Island.

With busy shipping traffic, disaster is bound to happen. Also no one with strategic calculation would set up sub base so close to most important commercial port and tourist center. Unless offcourse regime is planning to kill deep sea port project and put Cox's Bazar tourism industry at risk. Therefore, it is highly incompetent and short sighted decision if sub base is built in Kutubdia.

Instead, as report also suggested BN also looking for 500 acres of land in Rabanabad channel near Patuakhali, that would be better choice.
