I do remember reading into Balkan history and it is quite disheartening to see what happened in Bulgaria, Romania and Greece during the Ottoman occupation. But one thing I am awed at is the shear fact that the Orthodox churches, monasteries and schools of thought throughout Romania (+ Wallachia) were preserved, unperturbed ! In fact, even during the occupation, the Orthodox Christian faith grew and thrived, a beacon of the Patriarchy of Constantinople's guiding light. The Ottoman occupation did not , at all, touch the Orthodox Christianity in much of the european provinces of the Byzantium Empire. For example: Makedonia, Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania (+ Moldova) and to an extent even Ukrayinya, Russia --- all are centers of Christian Orthodoxy...

Well,for the most part the Christians paid their taxes which filled Ottoman cuffers and they had no intention of having the entire Balkans in riot mode because that's what would have happenned if you tried to completely exterminate Christianity in there.It would have been a bad move,considering that they were allready engaged against the European powers of the time on multiple fronts.
