Another Bizarre Diktat: ‘Posting Pictures Is Un-Islamic’

An Islamic Seminary from Saharanpur, Darul Uloom issued a fatwa against Muslim men and women posting their pictures on social media stating that doing so is ‘un-Islamic’.

Darul Iftaa, which issues the Darul Uloom Deoband's edicts, has pronounced that Muslim men and women should not post pictures of themselves or their family members on social media, adding that the act is un-Islamic. The fatwa was issued when a person submitted a written question to the Fatwa department, Darul Iftaa asking whether posting pictures of oneself or his wife on Facebook and Whatsapp was un-Islamic or not.The fatwa said that Islam doesn't allow the act.

On October 9, the seminary had issued another fatwa banning Muslim women from plucking, trimming and shaping their eyebrows.

Merely a week ago, Bollywood actor Fatima Sana Shaikh was trolled on social media for posting a picture in a saree! “Really a Shamefully pic by a shameless girl,” an Instagram user wrote. Not too long ago, Indian cricketer, Mohammad Kaif faced flak on social media for posting an image of himself playing with his son. While many found the father-son image adorable, some social media users took this as an opportunity to lash out at the former right-handed batsman and tell him that playing chess was against Islam.

Because some scholars are of the opinion that's unless essential such as for passport or if then all pictures of animate objects are haram

The issue has been settled long ago. But a lot of people desire publicity and hence such controversial statements/fatwas are seen, from time to time. First, the pictures were completely forbidden. Then, somebody realized that a pilgrimage to the holy cities is required of Muslims if they have the means, travel documents must now be made in the modern world and that requires one to take a picture. Afterwards, they realized that education, identification, research and development and what-not can also not take place without "pictures". Hence the leniency for "essential purposes only" later on. By now, most of them allow all pictures, since now to stay relevant, they do it themselves. And since nobody can exactly define the "essential" part.

There was an old story I heard, its hilarious. There was a Mullah, who was asked to issue a fatwa/religious ruling to ban all currency notes, for reasons I don't know. He replied that my ruling will not work, the note will Lol

Where I work, a picture is posted in which people are taking selfies and then their picture is taken by 3rd person and posted with the bold letters

"IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURES HERE"
