99% of colleges in India do not have infrastructure: SC

Ghost educational institutes is not new phenomenon in sub-continent the influential people show these on paper when none is existing hence they snatch the funds otherwise allocated for promotion of education :(

You Didnt Read The Article It Seems.

There are No Ghost or NON EXHISTENET Colleges we are Talking About ( 90%+ Here Are private Institutes which are Owned by "BigWigs" which DONT GET ANY GOVT FUNDS )

There are a Large No of colleges in India that have been Existing ( and Increasing Rapidly ) but Not Providing the Infrastructure They Should Have as per The Norms. This Applies To :

Library
Internet Connectivity
Labs
Instruments
Qualified Faculty
Etc.

I am Closely Associated with a NIT ( National Institute Of Technology ) Whose Alumni are Several Top Office Holders in Microsoft, HP , Wipro , Sun and IBM.

And The Standards I see Really Need Huge $$$ To setup, Hence These Private Institutes which are more focusses on 'money making' dont ( or Cant Afford ) make these Investments and The Actual Loose is the Student Himself.

Its an Alarming Situation and Govt. Must Take Steps before Its Too Late.

Thank you for info.

In that case i think bashing the poster for this thread was little uncalled for :)

I think 90% would have been a much realistic figure.
I do agree that majority of our educational institutions do not have proper infrastructure leaving only government colleges and some private institutions.
Majority of colleges get these APPROVALS because of high corruption prevailing in accreditation granting authorities.
We can see that many colleges get approvals even before their infrastructure is erected.
I have even read somewhere very recently that only 10% of the graduates are employable.

Only the IITs, IIMs, NITs and some private institutes have adequate infrastructure.

I just love this guy SOCOM, he is having a terrific time here. It seems this is keeping him healthy. The amount of research he is putting in getting all the negative news of India should automatically qualify him as professor in some anti India Madrassa.

HAHAHAA! This is the silliest exaggeration made by the supreme court. Guess the statements is to further encourage betterment works.

99% of colleges in India do not have infrastructure: SC

TNN, Jul 22, 2010
01.38am IST

NEW DELHI: Students lured into taking admission through false advertisements by unrecognised and non-affiliated colleges should be compensated heavily by these institutions, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday.

"Why not pay Rs 2 lakh to each student duped by such institutions? It's quite like railway accidents where the government compensates the victims. Here the students are the victims by the career accident. Only if these bogus institutions are made to pay, then this menace will stop," it said.

These remarks came from a Bench comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly, which was taken aback by the rampancy of unrecognised and non-affiliated colleges offering BEd courses to students, who at the end of the course find themselves in the lurch.

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) also came for a lot of flak, despite its member secretary Hasib Ahmed trying to explain the steps being taken to take action against those institutions which illegally admitted students and being strict in granting recognition to colleges.

The Bench asked him to file an affidavit by Thursday promising that not a single institution not meeting the criteria and infrastructure requirement will be given recognition henceforth.

It said: "In India, 99% of the government and private colleges do not have infrastructure as required under the statute. They are just like shops fleecing money from the students and not bothering about their future."

The Bench was dealing with appeals by a large number of colleges in the western region which had admitted students without having proper sanction. It found out that around 1,200 colleges were given recognition by NCTE in a period of 10 years and wondered as to how so many inspections were carried out by the regulatory body.

"Do not compromise with the standards of education. We have a political class which wants to practice what was prevalent long ago in US -- appoint party men to posts of teachers. Here in India, just before the elections the ruling parties would come out with advertisements for filling thousands of teachers' posts. This is nothing but playing with the future of the students," the Bench said while reserving verdict in the cases.

Student from these 99 % colleges are going to USA and Europe and making 25-35 of scientists in NASA, 1/3-1/4 doctor in America, Engineer in there industries. and rocking with there knowledge.

its because they are good students so US's companies hire them but here the news is about the infrastructure of your IITs which is of poor level than the western ones

this news is sad but true. Indian government needs to do a good level of investments to improve infrastructure of Indian tech institutes. Below is the ‘QS University Ranking’, the most recognized ranking in the world by any of the newspaper/ the governments and none of the Indian tech institute fall with ‘5 Star label’ here. I did my Master of Engineering in Mechanical/ Manufacturing engineering and also Master of Engineering Management from University of Technology Sydney which is placed at 143 number this year, below than its ranking in 2003 when I joined that university but it maintains it 5 Star Label since then but none from any of the IITs in 5 star label even right now also while ‘cut off of marks’ of Indian institutes are much higher than the western institutes? this way I find UTS still among top 20 tech universities if we consider ‘5 star label’ only and we had almost 100% campus selection from the overseas employers there but Indian instutes like IITs also don’t get 100% campus selection?

we have current top 10 tech institutes of India as below but none with good infrastructure, which can have 5 start label in near future

India's 10 top engineering colleges

As the school academic session for 2011-12 closes, the race for admission to the country's coveted engineering institutes begins. Just a few days back, students across the country appeared for IIT-JEE exams. While IITs surely are among the best engineering institutes in India, there are many others who equally excel in infrastructure and academic environment. IT magazine Dataquest recently released a list of India's top engineering institutes.

The list based on the magazine's annual survey of best engineering institutes rates them on various parameters like campus placements, infrastructure and academic environment. While IITs, as always, continue their dominance in the list, it also reveals some surprises. Here's over to the top 10 'Best engineering colleges of 2011'.

1. IIT Bombay
2. IIT Madras
3. IIT Delhi
4. IIT Kharagpur
5. International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad
6. Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani
7. Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
8. Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
9. National Institute of Technology, Karnataka
10.Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, Delhi

i would say infrastructure related to research and development is quite non existent.

Like in my field biotechnology, every university is offering courses of Btech and mtech biotech, but only top level university have some research labs, while remaining just have theoretical courses.

. . .
That is possible. Lack of infrastructure and poor education standards are two different things.

.
99%?????? IIT's and IIM's by itself constitute 45% of Colleges in India....We might not have world class Infrastructures, But Enough Infrastructures on the subjects we are dealing with....

45% wow what is the source?

.
This is good news actually that Supreme court has taken cognizance of this matter. This should fix few things.
