In a big move by Khap Panchayats, around 100 Khaps from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have decided to promote Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padao' scheme. They have also called for stricter laws to curb female foeticide. The Khaps have called on the Haryana government to impose a punishment of 10 years imprisonment and a hefty fine for those convicted of committing female foeticide.

Not possible unless India is to turn into a police state. There is no way our courts or legal system will be able to handle this load if the self-regulatory mechanisms of the society were to be dismantled.

There is no absolute personal freedom and what is acceptable varies from society to society. You cannot bring American cultural mores here and expect the society to accept it unquestioningly. The compromise between individual freedom and societal norms is essential.
