Sri Lanka : World Bank lending US$ 165 million to Sri Lanka to provide safe drinking water and improved sanitation

Around 450,000 people are expected to benefit under the project from improved access to safe piped water, contributing to the Government's national target of increasing piped water coverage from the current 45 percent to 60 percent by 2020, a World Bank release said.

No political arguments in this thread please, let's talk about industrialisation and development.

Access to safe drinking water should be treated as a fundamental right.
A lot of diseases especially amongst infants and young children can be prevented if water cleanliness can be ensured.
Indirectly this will help in reducing expenditure over medical care and prevent epidemics, so the step should be seen as a social obligation.

For every $1 invested in water and sanitation, the United Nations Development Programme estimates a return of up to $8, depending on the region and technology.

SL government must be complimented to take up the issue in right earnest.

Beautiful infographics! Sri Lanka currently has 93% access to clean drinking water, but 7% of 20 million is still hundreds of thousands of people.
