Zia was a fearless military officer who fought against the invading Indian troops in the Khemkaran sector to protect Lahore from falling in the hands of India. Of all the PA regiments East Bengal Regiment received the most number of medals in that war of 1965. This same Zia at a later time proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh on behalf of Bangabandhu Sk. Mujibur Rahman when all the top political leaders were unable to give any direction.
Today, the AL people try to demean Zia's declaration of independence by comparing him to an unimportant AL leader Hannan of Chittagong. Thing is, Major Zia was an officer of the Pakistan Army, and his proclamation was a direct rebellion against Pakistan. It was a time when unprepared Bangali troops of East Bengal regiment (EBR), East Pakistan Rifles (EPR), Police and Ansar were being disarmed at gunpoints and killed.
Many hundreds have already been killed by the time Zia proclaimed independence. This so happened because no political leader had yet given any direction to the people of the then east Pakistan. They just did not know what they were supposed to do?
A hitherto unknown Pakistan Army officer Zia's proclamation gave the troops and the people a direction that the Bangalis of Pakistan would have to fight to liberate their country. With his proclamation all the bangali troops, police and ansars made a dash away from the non-Bangali troops to avoid sudden arrest and killing at their hands.
These troops became the core of the Liberation Army of Bangladesh. They provided training to the civilian volunteers who opted to fight the enemy. So, it was virtually Zia's proclamation that instigated the armed liberation war. Until then it was a political struggle under an united Pakistan to safeguard the intetrest of the Bangalis.
Zia's 2nd contribution was when he was finally selected to lead the country by the military and population combinedly on Nov 7, 1975. On 16 December 1971 Bangladeshi people liberated their country, and on Nov. 7, 1975 they felt that they have again liberated the country from the control of India. To our people both the dates weigh same.
So, essentially, Zia had saved the country two times in his lifetime only to be killed indirectly by Gen. Ershad at the instigation of India. May Allah grant him eternal Paradise.
How was he killed? A little detail plz
I had the opportunity to briefly meet and shake hands with this great leader. Indeed he was an inspiration for Bangladesh. If he had lived longer, the story of Bangladesh would be different.
This brings up an important issue, in third world countries we are too much dependent on great leaders and personalities, we need a system that depends more on a team rather than individuals. National leadership should always have contingencies and alternates so they can kick in at the loss of any one individual.
And Alas! Those, who segregated/Boxed up Muslims of SA by using her brother, didn't let his prodigy/disciple (Liakot Ali Khan) to make it happen that ultimately cost the breakup of united PAK.You know, it is said, that one of the reasons why Fatima Jinnah didn't want to come into politics and instead wanted to concentrate on building institutions was that she believed that Nations are built not through individuals but through enduring institutions ! I believe she was absolutely spot on !
So far I know first local awami league leader was proposed (maybe that Hannan) to declare the independence but that coward refused that for the fear of life. Later army officer Major Zia took the responsibility to declare. This bal now dances with glory of our independence war. Almost no bal guys were directly involved in war, all were under hideout. And at the end of war came notorious Mujib Bahini who actually started looting that lasted even after war.
BTW, do you have any firm source that says Ershad is behind the killing of Zia? I'm confused, Ershad continued everything initiated by Zia. During Ershad era our relation with China, Saudi Arab and Pakistan got a new height (initiated by Zia). Maybe there was 7 times state level visit by Ershad to China. Pakistan that time gifted 1/2 squadron of F-6 fighters to Bangladesh. If Ershad were influenced by india, how China, Pakistan relation got warmer then?

Pakistani Saga is the most tested/experimented guinea piggy's one, nothing seconds on it. Civil>Army then Civil>Army; so no root can see depth and stays at 'Playing Doll' for imperialists, thanks.
one of the best leader not only in Bangladesh but in the lager Muslim world
late president shaheed zia ur rahman
He sounds like a good leader; I, unfortunately, haven't had the chance to read up on him but I'd be sure to do now. A question, if you will : How is a looked upon by Awami League supporters and consequently the majority of Bangladeshis. I'm assuming that majority of Bangladesh supports the Awami League.
Why was he assassinated?
Is ershad believed to be a RAW agent in bangladesh?
