Air Force replaces contingent in Congo

Dhaka, July 26 (UNB)- Bangladesh Air Force is going to replace a BAF contingent comprising 36 members at United Nations peace keeping mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).

A total of 36 BAF personnel led by Group Captain M Mafidur Rahman left Dhaka for Congo by Emirates Airline’s flight on Monday.

Bangladesh Air Force achieved confidence of Congo Government and members of the public by discharging their duties in resolving conflict with efficiency, professionalism and sincerity,said a press release.

Senior BAF officers were present at the airport and saw them off.

Earlier, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman briefed the contingent members at BAF Base Bashar on July 21 and offered special munajat for success of the mission.

BAF raises objection to Dhaka metro rail route :

Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) has raised objection to the proposed metro rail route through Bijoy Sarani reasoning that its height would hinder air traffic.

It has proposed to move the route alignment to Khamar Bari at Farmgate.

On the other hand, Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), the lone financer of the metro rail project, has been persistently insisting on the route alignment through Bijoy Sarani.

Jica objected to bringing any changes to the proposed design of the project and in that case, they will not finance metro rail, said an official of the communications ministry.

Against such backdrop, the communications ministry yesterday sat with Finance Minister AMA Muhith to settle the issue. Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain, other high officials and representatives of BAF and Bangladesh Army attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Muhith told reporters that they would try to settle the matter talking to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and finalise the design of the project within two to three months. Jica wants to start the feasibility study by December, he added.

According to the proposed plan, the height of metro rail at Bijoy Sarani is 19 metres, which as per the BAF objection should not be more than 11 metres.

The communications ministry told the meeting that the height at that point can be reduced to 16 metres and that the metro rail can be suspended for some hours to avoid trouble to air traffic after it comes into operation.

In July this year, the communications minister had a wrap up meeting with a Jica mission about financing the project. Jica agreed to provide $ 1.7 billion as soft loan to implement the project.

The proposed 21.5-kilometre metro rail from Pallabi to Sayedabad is expected to help ease traffic jam in Dhaka city to a great extent. The cabinet in March approved the proposal for setting up the metro rail.

We have 16 MiG-29s, among them four are MiG-29UB (twin seater) other are MiG-29SE. There is no reason that we should sell our MiG-29. All are in good condition now and is very much capable with our skilled pitols.

Bangladesh have only 8 MiG-29's out of which 6 are SE and 2 are UB.

If the main enemy is Burma then F-7 is well enough cuz they dont have enough skilled pilots and their Mig-29 is not that upgraded.

Apart from the existing 12 MiG-29's (10B and 2 UB) Myanmar has ordered (in 2009) 20 MiG-29SMT's.

BAF will have only 8 MiG-29's (6 SE and 2 UB) against this.

What is better SE or SMT?

If India builds an airbase in Tripura,

I still fail to understand why we bought F-7s back in the mid 2000s.

For any nation looking for a basic jet fighter, the F-7 is always a formidable competitor, especially on price.

The F-7 for its price serves exactly that purpose of point defense.

Original and almost similar MiG-21 still in production.

Russian birds are very maintenance intensive, and therefore costly. Flying cost/hour is $5,500.

Russian birds can be a logistical nightmare

BAF should not buy newer MiG-29 or Mig-35 aircrafts IMO, their twin engines require much fuel. India would never shortlist Eurofighter or Dassault Rafale (winner and runner-up not announced yet as of 10 September 2011) for their mmrca if the single engine, less polluting, fuel saving, money saving (saving fuel always saves a lot of money) but formidable Mirage 2000 were in production for several more years. Saving money v v i for a country like Bd; BAF should buy FC-1 or J-10 and Sukhoi.

F-7 is a Good interceptor.....

Affirmative. Good pilots, i.e., highly trained pilots are as equally important as good aircrafts. Adequate budget for training BAF pilots must always be ensured.




In addition, Bd must buy S-300 or HQ-9 anti-aircraft missiles. Turkish Armed Forces may procure one of the two in a few years.
