'Wolf Warrior 2' earns $500m, breaks box office record

To enjoy the Chinese film Wolf Warrior II, shed your biases

Wolf Warrior II, an action film written by, directed by and staring Chinese actor Wu Jing, has become the first non-Hollywood movie ever to crack the list of 100 global box office champions, a dose of Chinese kung fu to Western-dominant movie markets.

While Hollywood superheroes who save the earth are taken for granted, some Western critics misjudged Wolf Warrior II as "propaganda stunt." It was a classic example of sour grapes.

Moviegoers shrugged off the prejudice. The film received a rating of 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.com, a famous US review aggregator for film and television.

The action is set deep in Africa, where Leng Feng, portrayed by Wu, reaffirms his duty as a soldier and battles Western mercenaries to rescue innocent Chinese civilians and African workers at a Chinese company.

Leng's sense of responsibility with the belief of "Once a Wolf Warrior, always a Wolf Warrior" is applauded on the screen and beyond. Tears were shed at the movie's end, and many returned for a second or third viewing.

But some Western critics saw the film differently.

Ignoring the value of loving one's homeland, something widely shared in China, the British Broadcasting Cooperation called the Chinese action movie "nationalist action movie."

Even the growing confidence of Chinese people etched in the movie is called great-power chauvinism. But is there really something wrong with having faith in one's country to carry out the quintessential job of protecting its own people?

In fact, such heroism claimed in the movie is commonly-articulated in Western war and action movies, including a number of Hollywood films.

During a press conference, Wu lashed out at the bias held by Western critics, saying "Why is that a problem? America makes movies that promote the American spirit. Why can't I do that for China?"

Actually, the US superheroes are inherently political creatures. In the backdrop of World War II, US superheroes including Captain America glamorized war in comic books. The US government even used comic books to promote conscription.

From then on, superhero images in comic books and movies have been devoted to the adventures of powerful individuals compelled to use their abilities to impose a personal morality on the world.

It is not hard to find a political complexion in them. People cannot help wondering whether these US superheros promote war while maintaining their own country as a defender of peace.

Different from most US superheroes who fight in a world of make believe, Wolf Warrior II is inspired by reality.

China's evacuations of people from such conflict-torn countries as Yemen and Libya have been hailed by the international community over the past few years.

At one point in the movie, Leng unfurled a Chinese flag with his arm as the flagpole to assure safe passage through a war zone.

China's emergence as a key player in Africa is a tough pill for Western countries to swallow. Some critics say Wolf Warrior II is merely propaganda whitewashing China's role on the continent.

But Wolf Warrior II is a microcosm of China's friendship with Africa.

Contrary to Western colonialists who brutally seized control of the continent, China is involved with the countries of Africa in a mutually beneficial way.

China imposes no political conditions on African governments when channeling aid and investment into the continent. Chinese firms are willing to invest where Western counterparts are unwilling, just like how the Chinese and locals live and work together in the movie.

Like Chinese doctor Chen in the movie helping to fight communicable diseases in Africa, many Chinese technicians are dispatched to Africa to provide modest social and economic assistance and to build people-to-people bridges to strengthen China-Africa solidarity.

But sour grapes can never make sweet wine.

As China grows increasingly interconnected on the global stage and rises as a power, double standards continue to be the norm. The prejudice surrounding Wolf Warrior II is yet another example.

In the future, China will continue to produce an abundance of high quality movies to entertain people all over the world. Eventually, the world -- free of misconceptions and bias -- will learn to embrace China as a peaceful and responsible country.

Chinese movie Wolf Warriors 2 is continuing its dominance at the domestic box office.

Wolf Warriors 2, the action-packed sequel to 2015's Wolf Warriors, has raked in 4.6 billion yuan, or $690 million, at the global box office so far.

The film has earned over 4.4 billion yuan on the Chinese mainland.

It has now surpassed Titanic to become the third film in history to pass the 660-million-dollar mark in one single market, only behind Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Wolf Warriors 2 is directed by and stars well-known Chinese action star Wu Jing.

Besides Wu, it also stars Zhang Han, Wu Gang, Celina Jade and Frank Grillo.

On August 7, after 11 days of its release, the film took in nearly 3.4 billion yuan at the domestic box office, cruising past Hong Kong movie star Stephen Chow's The Mermaid to become China's highest grossing film of all time.

The Chinese patriotic action blockbuster “Wolf Warrior 2” has become the highest-grossing film ever in China’s box office, rising last week to $608.6 million in ticket sales.

Much of its 18-day run occurred during an unofficial “blackout” when the Chinese government prohibits foreign films to spur its domestic market.

The movie raked in an additional $208.4 million last week when foreign films reappeared in theaters, according to film consulting firm Artisan Gateway.

The action-adventure film, produced by Beijing Dengfeng International Media, stars martial artist Wu Jing, Chinese American actress Celina Jade and American actor Frank Grillo. The intensely nationalistic movie follows Chinese special troops that are battling Western mercenaries in Africa.

The Chinese crime thriller “Guilty of Mind” came in a distant second, with $24.4 million in its first three days.

The Hong Kong heist film “The Adventurers” opened third, with a close $22.1 million in three days. It debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, and features well-known Chinese actors Andy Lau, Shu Qi and French actor Jean Reno.

The fantasy romance “Once Upon a Time” slid to fourth place, earning $13.8 million for an 11-day total of $77.7 million.

Another newcomer, “Legend of the Naga Pearls,” opened with $12.4 million in its first three days. The fantasy-action film features the royal descendant of an ancient tribe on a quest to find magic pearls.

Well said! China has been belittled by her domestic and foreign enemies for 68 years now, and now she is stronger than ever! Eat your heart out, all losers! :partay:

Action-oriented response is the best to make them cringe in their declining position.

In the end, they are powerless to do any harm other than wasting their time in never ending ling posts which go unread.

Just do not let them control the conversation. Make our own conversation, create our own discourse.

Deciphering Wolf Warriors 2 and untold stories

China PlusPublished: 2017-08-11 19:13:20

By China Plus commentator Luo Dan

The runaway success of Wolf Warriors 2 is something that few people could have imagined, with the film becoming the top-grossing movie of all time in China.

The action film has injected a freshness to China's film industry, which is traditionally been dominated by comedies and fantasies. The previous record holder, The Mermaid, is a fantasy romance that grossed 3.39 billion yuan last year.

The game-changing moment came on August 7, 2017, when Wolf Warriors 2 raked in over 3.4 billion yuan, less than two weeks after its debut. The blockbuster has now made a record 4 billion yuan, as it's still being screened in cinemas in both big and small cities across China.

The film's single-day earnings exceeded 200 million yuan, lasting for more than 10 days and breaking new ground for China's box office records.

Wolf Warriors 2 is the sequel to "Wolf Warrior", but the setting for the story has moved from the Chinese border to Africa. Wolf Warriors 2 tells the story of Leng Feng, played by martial art star Wu Jing, a former Chinese Special Forces operative, who sets off to rescue compatriots and friends in a war-torn region of Africa ravaged by local insurgents and foreign mercenaries.

Many observers have branded the film as a good combination of patriotic and commercial elements. The former could be reflected in the timing of its release, which was just several days ahead of August 1, the 90th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army. Even Wu Jing, who also directed the film, stated he wanted to portray an image of heroic and invincible Chinese soldiers in an international setting.

So what does 'international setting' mean? It certainly has a lot to do with the Chinese military mission in Africa and surrounding areas.

Few moviegoers will forget the scenes of pirates attacking merchant vessels and a Chinese warship helping Chinese nationals and foreign civilians out of conflict-hit area.

Undoubtedly, the two situations are reminiscent of the Chinese Navy's escort mission overseas and the two major evacuations of Chinese nationals in Libya and Yemen. The real events struck a chord for the Chinese audience, especially in terms of patriotism.

China sent its first escort squad to the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters in December 2008 in order to protect passing ships against pirate attacks, safeguard sea lane security and maintain freedom of navigation along waterways. So far, some 80 Chinese Navy vessels have helped ensure the safety of more than 6,000 domestic and foreign ships.

A typical high-profile example of this dates back to early April this year, when a Tuvalu-flagged freighter OS 35 was attacked by Somali pirates. Nineteen crew members locked themselves in a safe room until commandos from the Chinese flotilla came to their rescue. In a video clip that later went viral on China's social media, the crew extended their gratitude to the Chinese military, with one saying only China came to save them, although there were actually five warships in the area by that time.

The incident once entered the public spotlight about a month later, when the Chinese navy handed over 3 suspects in the foiled hijack attempt to the Somali authorities. This was covered by major western media outlets, which helped highlight Chinese soldiers for their awareness of law and international practice.

In reality, Chinese naval ships were already involved in evacuation missions in Libya and Yemen. In late February 2011, the naval frigate Xuzhou joined a special mission, sailing into the Mediterranean Sea to escort foreign ships with Chinese nationals evacuated from restive Libya. Within two weeks, more than 35,000 Chinese nationals were pulled out from the North African country by various means, including by air and sea. In March 2015, the naval frigate Lin Yi itself transported nearly 900 people from restive Yemen to Djibouti in east Africa. The evacuees included Chinese and people from about ten other countries, including Pakistan, Ethiopia, Singapore, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Germany, Canada, UK and Yemen.

The two Exodus-style events surely provided a source of inspiration for Wu Jing before he directed the film Wolf Warriors 2, the plot of which includes bringing Chinese and foreign employees in a local plant to safety. Chinese media report that among the audience were some involved in the real evacuation, and for them the movie went a long way toward explaining how they managed to pull through possibly the worst scenario in their life.

However, most of those watching Wolf Warriors 2 have little knowledge of China's multi-faceted connection with Africa and therefore it must be something else that appeals to them.

Generally speaking, to ordinary Chinese audiences, including millennials, jaw-dropping action sequences and the use of special effects are major attraction, which are also trademarks of Hollywood blockbusters like Saving Private Ryan, Transformer and Fast and Furious.

Analysts say director and actor Wu Jing's solution is the participation of a professional team and their emphasis on detail. Sam Hardgrave, fight coordinator of Captain America: Civil War, was invited to join Wu's production team to make the fighting scenes more impressive in accordance with Hollywood standards. Typical examples are protagonist Leng Feng's close-up five-minute fight with a mercenary leader, played by Hollywood veteran Frank Grillo who also appeared in Captain America as the antagonist. Sam Hardgrave also jokes that Wolf Warriors 2 could be termed "the tank version of Fast and Furious" as the movie sees quite a few stunts involving the heavy armored vehicle, including the bringing-down of helicopter.

Last but not least, Wu Jing's refusal to use stunt people for himself is another factor contributing to Wolf Warriors 2's success, because as both martial art actor and film director, he knows what he is good at, and how to bring the best visual effects in front of moviegoers.

To sum up, a good story line and professional production are prerequisites for a film's success, and with China's ever-increasing exchanges with foreign countries, ranging from government, economic to scientific and cultural, it's possible that Chinese audiences could see more high-quality films with exotic flavors in the future.

Well Xinhua is not telling the whole story. I would expect it to get 86% since almost all of the reviewers are going to be Chinese. This isn't an exclusive US audience site.

The movie has sold less than $2M in tickets in the US. Not much of a US audience to get reviews from to compare against only the 8 critics who have reviewed it.

China blockbuster breaks into top 100 grossing films worldwide
Source:AFP Published: 2017/8/17

Fresh from shattering China's box-office record, patriotic blockbuster Wolf Warrior 2 has claimed another slice of history by becoming the first non-Hollywood film to break into the top 100 all-time grossing movies worldwide.

The flag-waving action movie's plotline of Chinese soldiers saving war-ravaged Africans from Western baddies has resonated in an increasingly confident China, and the film last week became the country's all-time top earner less than two weeks after its theater release.

The strength of those domestic receipts has now propelled the film onto industry monitor Box Office Mojo's all-time 100 list, where Wednesday it knocked 1994's Forrest Gump from the No.100 spot.

Box Office Mojo said Wolf Warrior 2 had grossed $682.1 million worldwide, nearly all of it in Chinese cinemas.

But it looked likely to climb still further up the list - latest figures from the official China Movie Data Information Network said Wolf had already raked in 4.75 billion yuan ($710 million) in domestic sales as of Wednesday.

That would put it nearly another 10 places higher on Box Office Mojo's list, in the company of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

With special effects, stunts and explosions worthy of Hollywood, Wolf boasts the ominous tagline "whoever offends China will be hunted down no matter how far away they are."

It depicts a Chinese former special forces operative's fictional foray into an unnamed African war zone to rescue compatriots and downtrodden locals from rebels and blood-thirsty Western mercenaries.

The movie is directed by martial arts expert Wu Jing, who also plays the lead role of Leng Feng, and a cliff-hanger ending sets the stage for a third installment.

Wolf Warrior 2 will have work to do to climb up to the top ranks of the list, which is headed by Avatar (2009) at $2.7 billion, followed by Titanic (1997) and Star Wars: the Force Awakens (2015

That's why it will be a struggle to cross $1B.

As people here have said:
Hollywood [China] will have to stop portraying Chinese [Americans] badly if they want to make big money.

As people have repeatedly pointed out...lost potential if you ignore the #2 [#1] market
