Jhungary, you bring up a good point. but here's a counter example.
do europeans still wear this?
no right? because it's not freaking practical. welcome to the modern era.
Dude, Victorian style clothing is not western clothing? I am talking about Chinese dress in Western Clothing, the style change, but the orientation stays the same, today modern Clothing is a direct descendent of western clothing during Victorian era, and Victorian Era clothing is a direct descendent to Edwardian era clothing,
ALL OF WHICH WERE STILL WESTERN CLOTHING. Just because the west does not wear petticoat and 7 layer of garment anymore, that does not mean they weren't wearing westernized clothing from 1400 til now.
The problem is, you are talking about Victorian garment, which have 7 layer, which some of them girl still wear today (including undershirt, Brassier, short pants or pantaloons, and petticoat), the clothing evolved from 7 layer to today 4 Layer for girl (Brassier, Undershirt-Shirt, Short pants and Flocks, which is a sort of petticoat) and men from 5 layer to 3. We are still wearing the legacy of Victorian style garment. The clothing the west wore today is a direct descendant of Western Clothing in Victorian era.
On the other hand, Chinese era to modern day, which is a shift from oriental to western style clothing. There are culture that remain the same over the year, Muslim, for example is largely dressing the same as in 1500s but Chinese, on the other hand, does not dress like Chinese in Tang Dynasty or a evolved version of Tang dynasty clothing,
Modern Chinese ditched the traditional Chinese dress altogether dress in western clothing now. That is my point.
And finally, there are some group of people still live in Victorian Era in the west and dress accordingly,
Amish
Orthodox Jewish
So, if even in the west, there are still people dress in Victorian style clothing, where are the Chinese dress day to day in Long Pao and Cheongsam?
I think people in Hollywood won't agree with JHungary, because they basically don't care about pride, only profit. This Wolf Warrior 2 movie proof that China has a very powerful market for the Hollywood movie to take. What wrong taking both USA and China tasty market for profit? Only stupid prideful movie maker will find it offensive when they see this new market opportunity challenge their traditional market target. Because they can actually take both markets. and it is basically money to take. The problem is, what genre that will help Hollywood movie makers to take Chinese money with their movie? Chinese save the world from Alien?
Profits? Okay, Let's talk about Profits
Let's say Hollywood make a WW2 style movie, yes, they can earn 800 millions in China, but that's it, At best they can claw back 2 to 5 millions in the west. Which will place their box office in 70ish position, ono the other hand, if they keep making American style movie that they can sell to everywhere, including China, they would have more than billions (or 2 billions) which earn 3 times as much as produce a move like WW2.
The problem is, if we talk about profits, China, as a whole is not comparable to the world. Put together the censorship in China, Chinese market is SMALL in term of Hollywood, because, yeah, Hollywood can make a Pro-China movie, but then it will bomb in the world, and that mean they aren't going to make as much money than making a pro-American Movie, don't forget, US and Canada IS Number 1 market in the world, it's naïve, stupid even, for an American producer to go after number 2 market (which is 6.3 bil) and give up the number 1 market (which is 11.5 billions) plus rest of the world which is about 4 to 5 billions) just to earn in China.
You are assuming what WW2 made is because it is a normal movie,, nope, WW2 made a lot of money because of nationalist sentiment, especially with india and Japan encroaching china, this is the sentiment which draw people to see Wolf Warrior 2. ANd the Hollywood would never make these kind of movie, this is a suicide.
I think you don't know how to make a movie, to make a movie, you need to have the audience identify themselves In the movie, if I make a movie in Hollywood about Chinese saving the earth form the Alien, it won't identify in anywhere but China, unless that Chinese is an Americanise-Chinese (like how Emma Stone play Captain Ng from Aloha), then the Chinese market would not Identify with the character, which mean I can only make either in China, or rest of the world, and only stupid would choose the former than the latter.
It's not about pride, it's about how the film communicate with the world, it won't work even if the hero is American and Chinese, because that won't work in China.
At the end of the day, there are only 1 group of people Hollywood would bend over to accommodate, and that's the American people, everything else is secondary, if the American audience like the Chinese, then yes, they may go for a pro-China movie, but if the Chinese have to be villain to make money in America, then they will play the Chinese bad, it's that simple.
