The recent incursions and the fightback of the taliban in waziristan after the pak army had to pull out of those areas previously, is raising some serious questions about pakistan's ability to suppress them this time around. The last retreat was seen as a defeat by many pakistanis themselves and if pak fails to curtail them, then surely the US threat wouldn't be just election rhetoric and pak could find itself in much the same way as iraq or afghanistan has. what's ur views.

Musharraf said, this jirga is useless until concerning parties are not here. And this jirga happened without those border tribes on Waziristan ...
But two question always been ask ..
Why Karazai is against fencing the border?
Why he is against issuing ID card to daily travelers across the border?

Can we trust afghans, Karazi who stayed in Pakistan 10 years and has house in Quetta. He himself was refugee. Then how Pakistan will take him serious, when this guy has no value, even in his own country or in our country. His more approach is pasthun nationalism, where era of nationalism is over.

I highly doubt it. They have become a law unto themselves in that part of pak. In fact, only recently did Pak army send nearly 80,000 troops into the tribal regions and ended up with casualties as many as 2,000 - almost equal to that of the tribals who field far less taliban and local fighters than the pak army.

The tribals/taliban in wazir. have only become stronger since.

Fighters 'seize Pakistan troops'

Scores of Pakistani soldiers are missing near the Afghanistan border amid claims from pro-Taleban militants that they have kidnapped 300 men.

More than 100 army personnel are unaccounted for, according to officials in the South Waziristan region.

A Muslim militant group said it had taken the troops because the government was not honouring a recent peace deal.

There has been rising violence in the region in recent months, with at least 60 soldiers and 250 militants killed.

Several peace deals between the government and rebels have collapsed.

US officials have described the tribal areas near the Afghan border as an al-Qaeda safe haven.

Aaj TV reporting that DG ISPR stating that missing men found. Were caught in bad weather reulting in loss of communications and a delay in the convoy.

I am not sure the "2000" figure is accurate. An AFP report referenced on wikipedia mentions 700 military and 1000 militant casualties till Jan 2007. Since the beginning of this year the army has mentioned 250 militants killed with 60 soldiers martyred. There might have been confusion over casualty numbers with about 500 soldiers martyred during the 2005 earthquake.

WANA: Senator Maulana Saleh Shah of South Waziristan said that about 150 soldiers, included in two contingents of the security forces going from Wana and Shakai to Ladha have been stopped due to damaged bridge on the way and the Mahsud tribes have provided them protection.

Senator Saleh Shah told Geo news that the Mahsud tribes have provided protection to about 150 security personnel in the area consists of wide forests.

He said that there were misunderstandings due to closure of the road at the damaged bridge in Sarwangai and the security men were not kidnapped or made hostage.

Thats an interesting take. Providing "protection" to the security forces. I'm curious if these are pro-Government tribals or militants. Good PR move on their part though.

Missing Pakistani soldiers found, not kidnapped: military

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - About 100 Pakistani soldiers missing and fear kidnapped by militants in a tribal zone bordering Afghanistan have been found safe, a military spokesman said Thursday.

A convoy transporting the soldiers in rugged South Waziristan district was sheltering from bad weather in a valley, the spokesman told AFP.

"We hope they will return to their camp tomorrow morning, there is no suggestion of kidnapping or fighting," Major General Waheed Arshad said.

Many possibilities. Radio contact may have been lost due to weather, damage etc. Or maybe something weird did happen with the tribals...who knows.

If you are in the army and lose contact of a platoon for one day, do you announce this to the media? My bet is on the second question.
