Why learning English has become a fad in China

We have seen other thread like this and some of the respondents are very nationalistic about their native language -- consider those words "native language", in other words a accident of history, after all, no one chooses a "native language" -- and where there are multiple native languages, the one which seems to win out, does so either because of numbers or the ability to expert power on all others ---- English became popular first by exerting power on others, because others saw their self interest in it - consider:

"In the future probably English can be a single language in the future," said Young Xi, English Major student, Dianchi Inter-College, Kunming, Yunnan province.

"English will help me get the top job in China," said Gao Liang, English Major student, Dianchi Inter-College, Kunming, Yunnan province.

But today the English are gone, they are happy in their Island and the US will soon be gone, in history, it will be like a blink of an eye --- So why does English have such currency?? Why do people all over the world, see a benefit, their self interest in it??

Are all these peoples unpatriotic, have no nationalistic pride?? No cultural pride or prejudice??

Allow me to suggest that these things have nothing to do with why English is so popular, why it's universal -- English is flexible and simple and easy to learn -- most importantly, given the history of achievement in the sciences, English is a problem solving tool - that's why people see their self interest in it

Anyone who favors another language over their own in their own country is surely a brainwashed idiots.

They will be laughed at, being so damn pretentious. When ones throws away ones language for another, there can be no more contribution or growth for that language.

Look at India. English speaking country laugh at their accents and their own writers are discriminated against in favor of English writers who fits into the Western narrative. Indian English writers can't compete with English writes, because the language is not part of their culture.

The Chinese government are very aware and pretty astute about these things. They will stop it before it gets out of hand. Only lazy country adopt English as their language of choices, since they have no literary imagination to further their own language.

Speaking of Singapore, English lads walk around feeling like they are Gods, since even the local both men and women are so quick to lick the English feets. That is what happened when you glorify English and Foreigner.

On Indonesia, there are some iditos who can't speak Indonesian even when they are born there, since they go to English school their whole goddamn life. Shameful.

Don't generalize us just because you're some 3rd generation know it all American Chinese. And don't even bring Indonesians into this, I have friends that endured thru the racial riots and saw people hung from lamppost during those time. Those that don't speak English survive in a tougher environment that you can ever face.

The foreigners are fortunate that Asians are a relatively humble lot which makes their stay in most Asian countries comfortable, that does not mean we don't kick your a** when we need to. We sent Mr Fay back with some slaps on his butt while Clinton went pleading for his didn't we?

Can't believe this is the kind of nonsense a fellow overseas Chinese can come up with. Puts himself on a freakin morality pedestal

How about see English(or any other language) just as a tool for communication and not make it an issue of national pride and what not.

Uniformity makes our life easier.

Agreed on that

This is just the traits of being colonized early by the British Empire, it has it good points and bad ones though I'm not sure if its that big a deal since we all mostly speak 2nd languages or even 3rd ones.

Hell its the reason why we can cross communicate on this forum in the first place!!

Indian writers are the most competent english writers. And most of the good ones have won top awards in English speaking countries. You living in the US and speaking English is the same thing so look at yourself. But I doubt you are an american

English is our only logical link with China. So you mullahs and commies please be civil, as long as English is a force in Pakistan, Chinese will have to keep learning it. Don't forget to learn Punjabi and Urdu, knowledge isn't a fad.

Yeah its an obsession in theory and I was actually a victim of this fad (fraud).

English is worthless in the working world.
People dealing with/working in /working for US/UK/Canada/Australia/India/SA (and another dozen countries) beg to differ...
Unless u qualify ur sentence as 'worthless in china..'

Ohh man. You dont seem to have read many books , have you heard of VS Naipaul or Salman Rushdie or Kushwant singh , Arundhati Roy ?
They all are famous in literary world, and all of them are Indians ... (I have read these author's books personally and there are many others whom I wouldnt know ..)

Just because u havent seen giraffe, doesnt mean Giraffes dont exist. Understanding that your knowledge is limited, may help you in future before declaring a opinion ..

Go, read a book or two ..

They don't learn/know english, problem will be for them. There was a popular vid that said that skilled workers in new era tend to go to Japan or India for IT works because communication in China is almost impossible as most of them don't know English.
Take pride in your own language, but the truth is the world runs on English and then it will be like you are speaking and no one else is understanding/listening :D

A must learn english including chinese. You can say mandarin has no use but for me it is the most beautiful and only true human language.

The company I worked for has business with foreign clients from English speaking countries. There is no English in the workplace. We have special staff to deal with the clients. There is no need for the average worker to know English. English for me has been an asset in only 2 ways: being able to pass exams and being able to talk trash to you on PDF.

An example of the failure of English is South Korea. Despite spending hundreds of billions of USD promoting English medium education most Koreans still score lower on the GMAT than Chinese. The billions invested in English have not produced significant results in South Korea and are equally unlikely to produce results in China.

So maybe English is worthless for oriental societies. The basic reason is we have no same core spirituality share with the westerners.

Funny, because here in Canada the language of Mandarin has become vastly popular. However, this is probably because of the huge influx of Chinese immigration.

by 2009, over 80 millions people are learning chinese, and the quatity increasing every day.
