In Kerala, a Beef-Eating Fest to Protest Against Beef Ban

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Beef cooked in the open and Hindus and Muslims sitting together for a meal - this was how a section of people in Kerala protested today against the recent ban on the meat in Maharashtra.

Beef in Kerala means both cows and buffaloes and its consumption has no religious overtones. Not only do some Hindus here eat beef, going by sales figures, it is also the most-favoured meat in the state.

The annual sale of beef is estimated at 2.3 lakh metric tonnes against the corresponding figure for poultry -- 1.51 lakh metric tonnes.

"I am a Hindu. I should be given the freedom to eat whatever I want, even when I am eating this," said Ajith P from Kannur, who was at the protest of DYFI, the state CPM's youth wing, at Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

Sharing the dish with him was Ajeeth Muhammad. Though a supporter of Muslim League, he said he didn't mind backing a cause. "None of us here have issues with beef consumption. It is part of Kerala's culture. How can we be stopped from eating something we want to?" he said.

Heading the protest, DYFI's B Biju said, "This is a token protest against the ban of beef in Maharashtra and a warning for anyone who would want to implement the same in Kerala. Any ban our food will not be acceptable."

A state panchayat law lays clear guidelines for slaughterhouses - that an animal can't be slaughtered unless it is over 10 years old, or has been made unfit for work or breeding due to injury or deformity.

Digging into the beef curry before returning to the Assembly, CPM legislator P Sreeramakrishnan said, "I eat my beef. And so do many others in Kerala. Nothing will change."

Last week, President Pranab Mukherjee ratified the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill which bans the slaughter of calves and bullocks.

Anyone found selling or eating beef can be jailed for five years and fined Rs. 10,000. Only the consumption of buffaloes, which give inferior quality beef, will be allowed.

Beef traders - thousands of whom will be jobless - and a section of people in social media have protested against the ban, with hashtag #BeefBan trending for a while on Twitter.Story First Published: March 10, 2015 20:07 IST

if this was true, you protest by not eating beef, and not by eating it. No one was force fed beef.
How come this did not work in christian institutions in North ? Logically this means, beef was there in Christian hostels because hindus liked it too. Let other Nair's here contradict my logic.

you paint the picture of kerala Hindus as totally subservient and powerless, wrt beef. They are Asuras just like Kerala Christians and Muslims, rest of the world. Enjoy the ride.

Peer pressure and the inherent Rebel in every teenager makes them perfect candidates for brain washing. It was force fed since the consent of the children's parents were not taken before introducing Beef in the children's menu. The same way sex with a minor is RAPE even if she consents to it.

Christians institutions in the north are in minority, they are a majority in kerala. I am the other Nair here contradicting your logic.

I paint the true picture of Kerala Hindus because I am one. There is no one better than me to paint that picture. Certainly not you. ...... and I am not a Asura and neither are the majority of Hindus in kerala:tdown: (As if it is something to be proud of  )

Not correct.

Though Caste is mostly fixed, it go up and down the laddar with ease. Caste is 1000CE onward phenomenon and it originated from artisan guilds, distinct profession, Tribal identities, and warring clan culture. There is no metion of caste system in whole HIndu literature. It is not equivalent to varna system. The difference of mobility in varna system and caste system is that , while in Varna system an individual could change his social position on his own (Vishwamitra is a obvious example that comes to my mind) ; in latter day caste system , it is whole caste which goes up or down. An individual by himself could not caste, but he could lose caste and become an outcaste , a Chandala, if he eats meat. Caste ,today, are fixed by government decree, not be social and religious norms.

Which part was not correct? You finally said the same thing that that I said. We are obviously not in the year 1015.

And who said eating meat makes a Hindu chandala? This attitude helped other religions to spread.

Again, you don't get to dictate it, nobody can. In any case you won't find me fanatically promoting my religious identity. Btw, forcing others to follow my religious preferences is not 'defending' my religion, it is 'intolerance'.

You are fanatically promoting your religious view point :P

No body is forcing anybody to follow hindu religious preference. Hindus are intolerable to Murder, Rape, Theft etc. ......... We are quite ok with our intolerance to Adharma. I do not expect criminals to agree with me. I just don't care for their protests.

Some other groups follow the same principals against their state policies, Taliban/TTP, Jamatis, Boko Haram, etc.
And don't misinterpret Lord Krishna's teachings. VHP and Bajrangi goons are not the best examples of Hindus.

Godwin's Law again  .............. that shows how shallow your argment is. Neither are you the best example of Hindus. Its a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.

Can only laugh at these ppl passing idiotic comments on Keralites and the culture/food habits here.

And amazing how these retards keep clamouring on about Hinduism, like its there dehej ka property. Take a hike!

Seeing these people bark the way they do, makes me real proud of the culture in kerala, and mallu's in general..the fact that you can be open minded -- live the way you want to and not be persecuted.

No more idiotic than your comments.

Amazing how you seem to think that Hinduism is your dehej ka property.

You do not have a monopoly on the pride of mallus. Mallus are also open minded about Hinduism and the tenets of Hinduism and the interpretation of Dharma.

Prohibits what? How does it matter to those who don't follow him?

Let us clarify it for once are all.

IS THERE ANY HINDU SCRIPTURES YOU DO FOLLOW ?

Excuse my ignorance on the finer details of Hinduism but is it a matter of interpretation or do some people simply not believe in some of the Brahmans and their teachings?
We don't have one school of thought.
There's 6 diff schools of thought, Vedanta(the dominant current of hinduism), mimasa (anti-mystic ), Nyaya (sources of knowledge), yoga, Sankhya and vaisheshika. Since Vedanta is dominant, it is important to know that it has 2 parts, one is liberation through knowledge and other is through bhakti marg.
We hindus don't 've a single religious leader, and ergo most prolly not all of us follow the same teachings, for example the one who follows "liberation through knowledge" would most prolly sound like an atheist to others, but at the same time those who follow bhakti marg would come out as very religious. I guess thats why you'll find hindus from both the extremes.
And on this thread both the extremes 're waging a war. :)

http://selfdefinition.org/yoga/Comp.../Swami Vivekananda Complete Works (Vol 3).pdf

During Swami Vivekananda's time Corruption of the vedas was circulated by the british "scholars" and viekananda himself was the victim of this. Vivekananda used to discuss the vedas with Max Muller who's understanding of the Veda's were purely non religious.

It was only after Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote Satyarth Prakash , that the true knowledge of Vedas came into light which is now the most common unadultered version read in India .

But if you want to use Swami Vivekananda as a Fig leaf to promote debauchery, that is your choice.

Not necessarily. A lot of Hindutvas would have voted for Congress earlier because BJP never fulfilled their promises of being devoted to Hindutva. There was a sense of betrayal. Anyway, now it is coming true on its promises so no reason why people who were disappointed earlier should not vote for them. So there is pro-Hindutva plus 3 + 4 + 5 now.
Ask BJP to go for a snap poll then, like what Rajapakshe did. They will get 2/3rd malority and will be able to pass all the bills they want to pass.
1. Yes for Hindus only and for all Hindus. Only all this long they were not aware of their power or their rights.
Beef is not a taboo for all Hindus, that's what I was saying.
2. Caste is not fixed now. Hindus are on their way to going back to the way old caste system was, decided by guna and not by birth. The social dynamics will be based on that.
ha? So how many high caste Hindus have been declared as chandals and included into reservation schemes? @SarthakGanguly I thought RSS is against caste.
3. There was no independent media all this long. So a lot of what was going on with congress remained invisible to people. Plus the systematic disinformation campaign always worked against the Hindus. We have just about done an 180 degree turn. The more you twist and the more you protest, the harder the stance the Hindu right will take. The temples will be freed. Once that is on, there is no power in the world which will ever marginalize the Hindus in India ever again.
Is it? There was no free media in 2004 and 2009? Hindutva was not used as an agenda in 2014 election, why? Because BJP knows Hindutva won't win them election.
4. It does. The courts are made up of people. People who are products of their age and time. There was an era of communism and pseudosecularism. That era is way past its sell by date. All recent rulings have come in favor of Hindus including the rejection of PIL by Delhi High Court Yesterday on stalling the beef ban in Maharashtra.
Let RSS contest the election on its own if it is an era of right wing Hindutva.

Instead of beating around the bush, why don't you just tell us what Hindu Scriptures you believe in ?

You said that social positions are fixed. I just corrected you that they are not cast in stone. I should have used partially correct rather than incorrect.

Again meat part was a typing oversight. It is basically Beef along with meat of some wild animals like Elephant which made you outcaste , not any meat.

You are fanatically promoting your religious view point :P

I am not promoting any religious viewpoint here.
Stating that religious dictates of one religion must not apply to other religions is not promoting religious view point.

And needless to say that those who don't agree to your Hindutva view point are not criminals.
Godwin's Law again  .............. that shows how shallow your argment is. Neither are you the best example of Hindus. Its a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.
Where is 'argument' in your post? All I see is some frustrated blabbering.
Let us clarify it for once are all.

IS THERE ANY HINDU SCRIPTURES YOU DO FOLLOW ?
How it is relevant here? There are vegetarian Hindus, non-vegetarian Hindus, beef eating Hindus, pork eating Hindus, chicken eating Hindus (which was a taboo in the past), there are other Indians belonging to other faiths, and there are atheists, all of them don't need to follow your Hindutva rules.
