Why does India compare itself with China?

Yawn. Who says China represents success of communist dictatorship? It is a bigger failure than Cuba is. Cuba has a better healthcare system. Cuba doesn't have anything of the magnitude of the Great Leap Forward or any such rubbish. Cuba also stood up to America on multiple occasions like a proud nation unlike China was has routinely folded. LOL, a few years ago China actually released an American airman who entered Chinese air and killed a Chinese pilot. Can't imagine Cuba doing that. Or pretty much any country with half a backbone.
Cuba is much better than China, only second to india.

Everyone is caught up in the per capita debate, no poster here is analyzing the social, development and other factors where India and Pakistan are similar to one another.

India has been propped by the West to counter China; yet despite its improvements, it is still at par or lags behind Pakistan in many social and development factors.

Would like to see Indian posters comment on that.

India is a large country with a large population. The per capita incomes and socio-economic conditions of certain parts of undeveloped parts of India bring down the average figures.

How about comparing the Pakistani economy to Maharashtra's while comparing Pakistan's socio-economic conditions to that of Kerala? India is limited by state governments, that's why you will find many states at different levels of development. Hence, the overall average figure is lower than it should be. But some of the industrialized states in India overwhelmingly beat Pakistan.

Regardless, there certainly is no point comparing a small country like Pakistan with a large country like India in any real way. I mean, Norway beats India in every socio-economic indicator, but doesn't have a space program. So how would you quantify that?

India has a significant population, in tens of millions, probably well over 50 million, that enjoys the same kind of life an average Norwegian does. Most of India's wealth is held by this population. And this population significantly surpasses Pakistan's wealthy population. So how about comparing India's rich with Pakistan's rich? Pakistan will obviously fall woefully short, I mean even Norway will fall short when you bring in Ambani, Adani, Tata etc. So how do you quantify these things?

Think about it, if India has even 25 million people living the same life as an average Norwegian, how powerful do you really think India is compared to even countries like UK or France? Can you compare Pakistan to such a country now?

China is in the same boat as India. Both countries have similar potential and similar aspirations. That's why these two countries are compared. Even though China is better in many socio-economic indicators, it's not a significant lead like the developed countries have, I mean, it's just a 10-15 year lead, not even a 1 generation difference. Technology makes the difference even smaller. But it still makes the two countries quite comparable in practically every way.

Oh you simple Chinese. We were talking about communist nations and comparing them. Sigh. It is an uphill task. But such is the brown man's burden.

We are not safe, we could be shot by the police or thrown into prison at any moment for whatever we do. We really really envy you lucky Indians.
You haven't been to India bro. The safety and security there is scary as hell, especially for fair skinned ladies. In most tier 1 Chinese cities, you can safely walk at night, not in India.

I have worked in shim sha tsui Kowloon, HK.
I know how hard working & disciplined the Chinese are, versus whom, Indians are the most lethargic.

No wonder China is where it ought to be.
While look at India - struggling.

Are you calling yourself lethargic?

It's not safe to walk at night in desolate streets in the US or Australia either. India is a hell of a lot safer than the US.

Why do Indians want to compare their nation to China, & equate Pakistan to Afghanistan, when by all socioeconomic, political, health, development measures etc, India & Pakistan are very similar; & India is nothing like Pakistan. Saying Pakistan is like Afghanistan is like saying India is like Afghanistan.

So just a few examples:

Actually its Pakistanis who always bring the comparisons between India and China to overcome their inadequacies. So whenever Pakistanis stand next to Indians and feel inferior they will immediately shout China and tell the Indians "See they are bigger than you".
However, giving the OP a fair deal its better to give some Indian perspective about the topic. Post independence India opted for a secular and democratic constitution unlike Pakistan and China who opted for theocratic and autocratic rules respectively. So India had and still has its challenges that an autocratic and theocratic state does not face. We as Indians appreciate the Chinese growth story but we will never agree to be under an autocratic rule, even if it means a delayed economic growth. Most of the comparisons with China is brought by the Indian communists while ordinary Indians only look for military comparisons.
Otherwise also it makes sense to study the nations which are similar in parameters like Area, Population, Developing economies etc.

"Why does India compare itself with China?"

Who cares? If it does, I am flattered. If it doesn't, then it doesn't.
