Why China > Soviet Union

. .
And yet your foreign policy is unable to do half of what USSR could do or even what today's Russia can do. By trading you cannot simply become a power. If it was that easy, Japan and Korea would have been 2 more quasi-superpowers decades before you came into the forefront. I am talking about pure capabilities. You share the trading trait a lot with the Japanese and Koreans.

But there's always more to it than just economy and trading or even for that matter military. You know what is that? Being ready to be a cushion for allies and ability to influence country-to-country decisions. China has a long way to go before that. Forget USSR, today's Russia has far more geopolitical respect than you could ever have. USSR is beyond your reach.

got some good points there, but in the end, economy will decide everything, money talks is always true, the fall of USSR was due to the collapse of the economy.getting rich and then build up your power like UK and US did in the past two centuries is way better than building up your power with limited fund, the latter is like slow suicidal process,in this case,USSR.

in today's world ,small countries which have no logistic rear, with very limited resources and manpower, can't develop into superpowers, tiny countries like Japan and Korea's chance to be superpower is much less than India,Brazil...100 years ago, maybe yes,but now in this very globalized world stage, not a chance.

If money decide everything, then Soviet Union had never reached the height of Japan after WWII.Japan's GDP have reached 70% of US,but that doesn't change that it's a puppet country of US.
In chinese history,Song was a very rich country, but that doesn't change that it's a lapdog of great 金 that founded by only tens of thousands of mighty jurchen warriors.

.
And you know this because?

because I am not ignorant as a forum member.

don't put Japan in line with Korea, and never.

one is a world power, the other is only a small developing nation.

and Japan is not a "tiny" country, it has a GDP 4 times India's.

in today's highly globalized world...

in today's highly globalized world...

in today's highly globalized world,Japan has the third biggest GDP,but still a puppet of US,and is even far more insignificant than UK and France in international politics.Russia has a far more insignificant GDP than Japan, but nobody can afford to ignore her.
A mighty country like Soviet Union would never blame a small country like phillipine over and over again, russian will kill those poor pinoy fishermen directly.

that's the legacy of the cold war and pre information age,but today's world is changing and reshaping, globalization is a fairly new thing, but it is already changing the world.

.
Let's not forget that Soviets had slaves not friends, wheras China has Iran, Pakistan and Russia as a friend. All countries within the region and millitary powers.

Why add Russia uselessly.

And u forget failed state of north korea.

The world never changed, the mighty US is still doing what they want and killing whom they want to kill, nobody can stop them and nobody can afford to ignore them.china is nothing in international politics.

.
that is because russia has a large nucleur stockpile that keeps it alive , put that aside their singinificance will drop to very low levels and then it will be US - CHINA - and then middle/world powers

SU died like an old granny into pieces , china has 1000x the opportunity to become much much stronger but everything is in its hand , 1. keep population happy 2. keep on growth 3. dont be seen as agressive country to world 4. gain alot if significance by starting to sell alot of weapons and being in top 2 in arms industry

US, France, UK, Germany and Russia are Many Decades ahead on the Curve than China/India because of the World War Legacies in Strategic Techs like Engines, Radars, Electronics. Unless and Unless China puts her entire Focus on reaching at the Top of the Curve, It will still be considered Inferior not matter what number China Fields.

sorry, but we don't share your inferiority complex to the west.

.
Looking at that chart, I am convinced that China will overtake US one day, probably in our lifetime, only to be overtaken by India at the end of this century.
Last century belonged to the West, this is the Asian century.

.
You can say of Germany and the US the same way before 1940.

the US pre WWII was exactly pursuing the same as China today is doing. there's a point when Quantity mass suddenly shift to Quality change.

Please understand this; the dynamics then and the dynamics today are very different. The resource levels, the level of competition, the level of global advancement in technology etc of that time was far lesser than today. Today every other country is coming up with newer and newer technologies that are giving competition to the dominant nations.

China has indeed moved to quality.

But my point is that it is not trade alone that makes a country a superpower. There are other softer factors as well as rough factors that come into play. USSR and US both successfully cultivated it.
