Why Can’t Vietnam Grow Better Rice?

It's simple logic. Our army hiden in the forest, why would the US spray our field? Most of Agent Orange victims were North Vietname soldiers and some US and South Vietnam troops who handled the Agent Orange.

Agent Blue was used on Vietnam fields because the Americans wanted to starve the Vietcongs.

Actually the Rainbow herbicides were used during the Vietnam War

From this map, you can see the red area was the anti-crop ops carried out. It was far from our Cuu Long Delta, which is our largest rice field. The Delta is around and West of Saigon, which were controled by both the US and South Vietnam army. Most of our high quality rice are tested on the Northen Vietnam, and often not on the Delta area.

Thanks though, never know that there were Agent Blue or Rainbow herbicides.

Sticky rice is a little bit hard to digest.

Its about taste and stickiness is not considered good here. We soak rice in water for half an hour and then dry it to remove its stickiness before using it for pulav or biryani.

.
In vietnam due to spraying huge amounts of orange herbicide between 1961 - 1971, their land is polluted and not very good for growing high quality rice.

Yes, their land and soil is not good, it's red earth, acidity soil, we often see this soil in tropical area and some South China places. 红壤_百度百科

I guess you are talking about the mountain area, cause my hometown, which is a Vietnam-China border province, grows really hard rice. If you want a sticky and good smell rice, you have to move closer to Delta. Most rices from areas around the delta have high quality.

Yeah...that makes sense, Delta are plains, rivers flow through, the soil is rich, of course high quality rice and other products. Actually, red soil can be improved.

Northern Vietnam groundwater highly toxic, study finds

A research published in a US scientific magazine Tuesday warned that underground water, the main source of water for the densely-populated Vietnam's Red River delta , is contaminated with deadly toxic chemicals.

Around 65 percent of tube wells studied in the area showed the water exceeds the WHO (World Health Organization) guidelines on arsenic, manganese, barium, selenium or a combination of these elements, the paper said on the US Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The study was conducted by foreign experts and scientists from Vietnamese institutes.

Excessive amounts of arsenic in water can cause skin, lung, bladder or kidney cancer as well as mental diseases while the same problem with manganese can severely affect the growth of children.

The pollution "poses a serious long-term health threat to about seven million people," the paper said, describing the situation as "particularly worrying" because groundwater is the main source of drinking water used in the delta, where 11 million out of 16.6 million residents do not have access to the public tap water and have to rely on other sources like ground water from private tube wells.

Arsenic pollution of groundwater, the research paper said, has been exacerbated by deep aquifer exploitation for more than a century.

It recommended the utilization of other sources of drinking water to avoid groundwater that contains high concentrations of arsenic and other contaminants in the long term.

It also suggested that residents and local authorities apply appropriate water treatment technologies to produce sustainable drinking water that meets safe water quality standards for both rural and urban populations.

The biggest consequence is mental disease, you can see that from PDF :eek:

This is surprising... I thought VIetnam's rice was good since we're the second highest exporter of it.

We use sticky rice to make rice-pudding(zongzi) during dragon-boat day, we soak rice in water much longer than half an hour.

It is still hard to digest , maybe different kind.

Can you at least point out a few provinces so I can investigate?

the Red River Delta provinces of Ha Nam, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thai Binh and Hai Duong.

You are right, many of our wells are intoxicated with arsenic. But don't worry, it won't affect the rice because water from well are used to cook and drink. To water the field, we use water from stream or river or farming canal.

Climatic reasons,chicken grown up during half year is better than grown up in 35days;
Just as in China, the best rice is grown in North East area, growth period is long, full particles, looks nerely transparent as emerald:

Rice in Vietnam can grown up three times one year, Particles slender and white, taste not well,

THe former grown up only 1 times per year(weak point), but more expensive and taste well(good point)
the latter grown up 3 times per year(good point), but cheap on market and taste not well(weak point)
