assalam alaikum
The first four Caliphs didnot fight each other for the rule and their murders was not bcoz of the succession. After that it was a total different story.
Where in the Quran does it say that a non-Muslim cannot be elected to run the State?
And what gives you the right to speculate on what the Prophet may or may not have done?
someone asked this question on the last page and i countered it since we know the Prophet (PBUH) we can answere this question from his acts. When he was in madinah and want to go for jihad he would oppoint a Muslim ameer in amdinah and when he used to send small armies to different places all the commanders will be muslims if anyone can give a non muslim name i will appreciate. if not then it is understood that certain jobs can't be given to non muslims.

The discussion that a non Muslim can be a leader of an Islamic state is downright silly... Only an American can be the president of America and only a Christian can be the pope...
however one should remember that Islam allows non Muslims complete participation in the affairs of life... as an example during the war against Persia some of the best fighters against the Persians in the Army of Umar Bin Khattab RA were the Arab Christians... similarly Coptics fought alongside Muslims under the banner of Salahuddin against the Crusaders!!!
