What's new

What Muslim country is ideologically most similar to Pakistan?

But Turkey is a secular country by constitution...So by the logic of constitution, I believe, Pakistan should be closer to Malaysia/Indonesia kind of nation..

To be honest, the political system is a weak link. If Pakistan was inherently secular like its initial years, still a big difference would remain.

Turkey came as a country for the ethnic group of Turks, and their goal was to preserve their ethnic identity from Arabic and Persian influence. Which is why they changed to latin script, replaced many words taken from Arabic and Persian, and initially calls to prayer were only allowed in the Turkish language.

Pakistan on the other hand came to be to save the Islamic identity under the flag of moderate and supposedly secular republic. The ethnicities were not under danger, but the religious identity was as Muslims' political ambitions were being sidelined in the subcontinent.

Calm down Democrat.

Arabs have a independent culture, but it was killed by extremists and socialists. If Gamal could have somehow united the Arab world we would be a superpower economically, and militarily.

I think we can get this culture back if we stop stressing Islam as much before being Arab.

President Gamal was a nationalist socialist. Arab and islamic identity can co-exist, it doesnt have to be either or.
A person can be a father, brother, husband etc at the same time - One person is made of many identities.

And if everything goes well for you, Pakistan will be an example in Muslim world in future. You are distinctly unique civilization where you practice Islam to the core, but not so conservative like Arabs. You are modern and trying to implement modern concepts to your nation, but you are not even close to being Turkey who pretends to be more Like Europeans...

Good to luck you Pakistan bud...I hope and wish...You will be an example of Islamic nation where nations will try to related with you than other way around..

It is very true. Pakistan would've been a very different country today if God had given Muhammad Ali Jinnah, perhaps, 10 more years to live.

Unfortunately, still conservative ideals are held in Pakistan. I would, for one, like to see Pakistan utilize its all-seasonal beach as a resort, it would be such a good influx of Tourism like India utilizes Goa, but religious conservatism stops that. Many more things.

Turkey, I don't think are trying to be like Europeans. They are going along with what they feel comfortable with, and it's fine. I like the environment here.

It reminds me of this article I was reading in a Turkish news site, wherein they recalled when a Pakistan Military field hospital was sent for the Cyprus Operation. The general, or some other rank, I don't remember, mentioned the same idea; that the environment was nice in Turkey, welcoming, and he would encourage youth of Pakistan to learn Turkish, and youth of Turkey to learn Urdu, so they both can learn better from each other. An exchange of ideals and pieces in religion and socio-political field would be nice.

This is actually the most correct assessment.

I dare not compare ourselves to Indians or Afghans, or the Arabs or the Turks. We're just as different, maybe in past similar to Afghans and Indians, but today different, and that is visually apparent.

I don't understand why people want to compare.

Yes and because his idealogy didn't work he ruined the culture and caused coups.

The biggest opportunity was lost by Arabs when Pakistan offered a uniting group, an idea of an Islamistan.

You know what saved Egypt? Pakistan's Pak-Turk agreement, and leverages used on UK.
Pakistan has always been selfless, probably the most selfless. But Arabs were pursuing these stupid Nationalist policies. If Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia had listened to Iraq in the 1950s, Muslims including Arabs would be in much better, better position than before, probably holding the status of a superpower.

Cultures are very important but it has little to do with being a muslim. Malaysians have nothing in common with Turkey or Pakistan, yet they share religious ties. We respect Turkey and Malaysia because of religious ties.

Turkey, Malaysia, Egypt or Indonesia will always be 'kardes' to Pakistan. The happiness Pakistanis feel to meet turks is exactly because of this reason that Pakistan views Turkey as a muslim nation.

I would stress historical ties instead of religious ties.

These people are the problem in Pakistan:)

4 pages have been discussed but nobody has yet mentioned Sufism. Historical perspectives have also been missed.

As always. Historical perspectives are probably the greatest link. If religion indeed was enough to bind people, 1950s, as well as the present would've been a very different time. Unfortunately not.

Well...You have valid point about Iran...Iran and Turkey adopted different statergy while dealing with West....So now, Turkey is one of the successful rich Islamic nation where as Iran is still in sanction..Let us park this debate for another day...

I am sorry, i should have said unique culture. Iran and Turkey has their own self identity apart from Islam...Because, Islam is a very generic identity for a country...I have seen in different forums, where Iranian people are being pride for their being an Iranian and their own history which is quite old...In the same way, Turkey people are very pride of their Turkik heritage and history....

There's no set time line. Where do you begin your history is up to you. Our Pakistani history starts with the Muslim League, and our legacy goes to the Mughals. We cherish this part.

Bangladesh is a secular country, infact they are very secular people. maybe due to a large hindu minority. and socialist icons.. and their culture is very very contrasting..

Ideologically speaking, any country born to save the Islamic identity and political ambitions of Muslims, would be the closest ideologically to Pakistan.
