Mohajir Qaumi Movement or Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) claims to be a representative party of Mohajirs, or refugees, who moved to Pakistan after 1947. According to MQM definitiojn, Mohajirs are those refugees who speak Urdu as their mother tongue. They refuse to accept refugees of other ethnicities as Mohajirs. They insist on their cultural superiority and that their forefathers alone were the makers of Pakistan.

MQM, is a political party of Pakistan founded on ethnic lines and known for violence and hate-mongering. In an effort to claim political mileage, it is driving further wedge between various ethnic groups living in the country. A similar claim led to break-up of Pakistan in 1971 when the Urdu-speaking migrants to East Pakistan tried to divide the society on the basis of ethnicity and the so-called superiority of their culture and language. This is being tried in Pakistan of today by an ethnic party who claim special treatment because their ancestors made Pakistan. This is being done out of sheer desperation because a new party, PTI, has emerged to challenge the grip of hate-mongers in the port city of Karachi.

This claim has brought the debate about creation of Pakistan into a sharp focus again with some critical questions; who made Pakistan and who gave sacrifices for its establishment?

It will be in order to bring some historical facts to attention of the readers of this page.

Pakistan came into being on August 15, 1947 to become homeland to millions of Muslims living in various parts of undivided India. Geographically, it comprised of the areas home to Muslims in majority. Its separation from the Hindu majority was aimed at sparing the Muslims from hegemonic atrocities and exploitation of Muslims at the hands of extremists Hindus in majority. The vision for Pakistan was presented by poet-philosopher, Iqbal from Sialkot in Punjab. He pursued for realize his dream of a separate homeland for Muslims in the Muslim-majority areas. The political party of Muslims deliberated on it and finally adopted Pakistan Resolution in 1940 in Lahore, the cultural capital of Punjab. The resolution was tabled by Lion of Bengal, Maulvi Fazle-Haq.

The elections of 1946 were a turning point for creation of Pakistan. The SindhAssembly adopted a resolution to become a part of Pakistan and there was referendum in NWFP (KPK of today) and Balochistan which overwhelmingly supported Pakistan. Punjab and East Bengal had already voted in support of Pakistan. All India Muslim League, the political party which fought the battle to make Pakistan was founded in 1906 in Dhakka and its first president was Nawab Salimullah. Jinnah, the Father of the Nation who actually founded Pakistan was a Gujarati whose father had settled in Karachi. Pakistan’s first prime minister, Liaquat Ali Khan was born in Karnal (now in Haryana).

The community which bore the brunt of creation of Pakistan was Punjabi Muslims who were killed in hundreds of thousands while they were on their way to their new homeland. The Sikh violence was unleashed mostly in Punjab targeting Punjabi Muslims. According to historical data, a huge population exchange occurred between the two newly formed states in the aftermath of partition. About 14.5 million people crossed the borders, including 8,226,000 Muslims who came to Pakistan from India. About 5.5 million settled in Punjab and around 1.5 million settled in Sindh. Most of those migrants who settled inPunjab, Pakistan came from the neighboring Indian regions of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh while others were from Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. On the other hand, most of those migrants who arrived in Sindh were primarily of Urdu-speaking background (termed the Muhajir people) and came from the northern and central urban centers of India, such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. However a limited number of Muhajirs also arrived by air and on ships. Later in 1950s, the majority of Urdu speaking refugees who migrated after the independence were settled in the port city of Karachi in southern Sindh and in the metropolitan cities of Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah and Mirpurkhas. In addition, some Urdu-speakers settled in the cities of Punjab, mainly in Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur and Rawalpindi. The number of migrants in Sindh was placed at over 540,000 of whom two-third were urban.

The Urdu-speaking minority which had the advantage of being better educated entrenched themselves in civil services and media. They worked hard to strengthen the perception that they alone were makers of Pakistan insulting the collective mandate of Punjab, East Bengal, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan and the sacrifices of millions who lost their lives and belongings in Punjab. Their claim that they are descendants of the makers of Pakistan is only laughable in the face of historical facts.

In late 70s, Pakistan Television, the only channel of those days, serialized a drama Manzil, based on a novel Tahira written by Inyatullah. The story of the novel revolved around Punjabi families who struggled for creation of Pakistan and suffered hugely. Munno Bhai, who wrote the script disassociated himself from the production because he was under pressure not to highlight the sacrifices of Punjabis. The story was distorted by the newly hired writer. So much was the influence of Urdu-speaking media people.

While Urdu-speaking Muslims did play their role and offered supreme sacrifices, it would be a travesty of history to claim immunity from law on hate mongering and terrorism in the name of noble and great Urdu-speaking leaders of Pakistan Movement. It is an insult to their greatness.

Supporting MQM is an insult for Pakistan loving patriotic people who call themselves urdu speakers though I am against the use of such term myself. MQM terror chief Altaf called partition a blunder and demanded India give panah to us. So whoever is supporting the MQM has no love for Pakistan.

???? seriously are you high on drugs?

.
MQM used this Term for their political point scoring , nothing else ...
but no matter what a Tom Dick and Harry say on this forum or have any grudge against certain people ... Urdu speaking peoples Contribution to the Creation of Pakistan is Far more the natives who were living there before Partition ..

The problem is which factors gave rise to party like MQM ?
This all goes back to Ayub khan vs Fatimah Jinnnah Presidential elections when Ayub Khan's son fired at Urdu-speaking supporters of Fatimah Jinnah in Liaquatabad result in loss of more than 12 lives.
God knows if Ayub didn't rig that elections Pakistan would still be in one piece plus whole Bengali population in east Pakistan was in favour of Fatimah Jinnah and her defeat which was surely a riging makes Bengali awaam angry plus shifting of capital from Karachi to Islamabad also become main reasons of this issue.
But all these facts are ignored due to massive development in Ayub's era.

A similar claim led to break-up of Pakistan in 1971 when the Urdu-speaking migrants to East Pakistan tried to divide the society on the basis of ethnicity and the so-called superiority of their culture and language.

This is one of the most pathetic lies ever.
It was urdu-speaking community who suffered most due to loss of East Pakistan and some of them are still there waiting for the day to see their homeland but no one cares about them. The only crime of Urdu-speaking community was to support and hide their Punjabi and Pashtun brothers who were being targetted by bengalis and supporting Pakistan Army makes them open target for mukti bahini whole villages of urdu-speaking people were massacered , destroyed and women were raped but due to lack of info and division of East pakistan these records were destroyed or either their pictures were changed into bengali victims of war.
Seriously i must say you cant imagine what is sacrifise like just because one party is representing the urdu-speaking community and doing target killing , land grabbing , street crimes ,etc makes the whole community violent and evil???

The major blow to coffins of Urdu-speakers was 1972 bill proposed by Mumtaz bhutto based on kauta system made the difference b/w Urban and Rural sindh making sindhi official language of sindh made a huge gap between urdu speakers and sindhi (while punjab, Kpk and balochistan's official language is still urdu).

Zia-ul-haq took advantage of these differences and provided assistance to formation of Muhajir Qaumi Movement to counter PPP in Sindh. Not to mention Bushra zaidi incident, qasba Aligarh and Paka qila massacre and 1992 military operation provided MQM a great oppurtunity to make militant wings.12 may,2007 is the main exmple of their militancy power that they can bring whole Karachi in their hand.

So the operation in Karachi should be done without making any differences and urdu-speaking people mostly of them support this operation.

Urdu speaking peoples Contribution to the Creation of Pakistan is Far more the natives who were living there before Partition ..
Nobody has the rights to measure contribution....

Pakistan is not Urdustan nor Punjabistan so please grow up people! GROW UP for the sake of Pakistan otherwise there will be no land to fight over!

Pakistan didn't need any enemy till there are people like you (@Pksecurity). Stop targeting people on the basis of ethnicity. All are Pakistani and they should be treated like Pakistani. Stop promoting hatred.

Why Pakistanis are always worried about breakup of Pakistan? I mean you people really love Pakistan and can surely say no one can break up Pakistan , only you yourself.

MQM hum sharminda hain, Nine zero hum sharminda hain
Altaf bahi na dahinda hain, Altaf Bahi darinda hain.

MQM does politics of hate and violence and this should have no space in Pakistani political environment. The other parties accept this type of politics as they too skeletons to hide.

.
Here comes the we have been oppressed brigade... with the justification for supporting a political party involved in rigging, bhatta khori and violent terrorism. Qoute them MQM birth date 1984. Violence from 1986-1996- 10000+ killed 3000 killed from 1985-1990. MQM and violence are intertwined, statistics point to it.

Its our choice whether we want to be the ones who destroy Pakistan with our own hands or vote with our concious, refusing ethnofacist parties like the PPP, MQM, ANP among others. All these parties are part of the problem andeach has leaders which have at least once said they do not believe in Pakistan:

Where Wali Khan said he is Pashtun first and Pakistani last:
Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Minority Rights - Google Books

Where MQM terror chief calls partition a blunder:

Where Hakim Ali Zardari calls Jinnah a suwar ka bacha

Decide who you vouch for people of Pakistan. A united, one Pakistan or a second break up like that of Bengal. Because the seeds of such a seperation are already within us. MQM has committed treason with Pakistan. If someone doesn't believe this just talk once with Syed Jamaluddin and ask him what his relationship was with the MQM.

This paragraph is extremely racist and one can see the biased opinion very clearly.
MQM is merely a minority group in present times and no Urdu speaker has "worked hard" to strengthen any of the BS perception mentioned above.
MQM was initially a direct outcome of the increasing hatred of jealous Punjabis and Pathans who did not like the idea of a minority group of educated Muhajirs owning and running the country and it's economy. But the fact was that these Urdu speakers were highly devoted to Pakistan and the reason they dominated the civil service was purely because they were more educated. Now, was being more educated their fault? No it wasn't.
As already mentioned Bushra Zaidi incident, Paqqa Killa and '92 massacre were factors that definitely strengthened the support for the MQM and people thought it was a genuine party that wanted to work for the Urban SIndh.
But the fact is MQM started losing it's intellectual vote bank when it started promoting the use of guns among Urdu speakers to "protect" themselves from Afghans. And besides that there were also Urdu speakers who since its inception were vehemently against the idea of MQM for fear it would deepen an ethnic divide or knew of it's crime syndicate from the start (my father's family for example).
Over the years people have exposed, re-exposed and realized the farce that is MQM and the ugly criminal mafia hidden behind the face of a political party. It has already lost its mandate in Karachi, I telly you. They only win because in Karachi they run the entire election process. Fakhruddin Ibrahim (CEC) at the time of the 2013 general elections woke up one day to the sound of gunfire outside his house with a 'dhamki' note. He was helpless to do anything in Karachi.
So, though discrimination against Urdu speakers doesn't exist anymore, one can not deny the efforts of Urdu speakers in the uplift of Pakistan.
