Ways of improving India-Bangladesh bilateral relations?

Just a thought, what was stopping Pakistan from retaking bangladesh after mukti bahani's victory.

NO real Bangladeshi will ever dispute the fact that India helped us in gaining our independence. There were Indian soldiers who gave their lives in our soil. But one must understand, without Bangladeshis fighting against Pakistan, let alone India winning the war decisively, Indians would not even get involved in the first place! Why? Because Bengali soldiers defended West Pakistan in 1965; why couldn't they defend Bangladesh from India in 1971? cause they were fighting against the Pakistanis; none of the 70 million Bangladeshis stopped Indians, in fact they helped them to fight Pakistanis. India did not take over Bangladesh. India was welcomed into Bangladesh by Bangladeshis to help them fight the Pakistan army as they were occupying Bangladesh.

The key to good politics or good relations is Compromise.
everyone wants India to Concede something or the other for just the chance of good relations but are not willing to compromise on anything themselves

Haats near India-BD border to open soon

SHILLONG: India and Bangladesh have reached an agreement to revive the border haats (markets) which have remained closed since Bangladesh came into being about four decades back. The decision to this effect was taken in Dhaka during the foreign secretary level talks held recently between both the countries, Meghalaya Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee said.

The five traditional border haats at Dawki, Borsora, Shella and two others in Garo hills would be revived soon. The Centre has conveyed this decision to the state government, Chatterjee told PTI.

Residents of border areas have been demanding the reopening of haats as perishable agricultural produce could be sold easily to Bangladesh.

A BSF official said officials from both the countries have surveyed the areas where the haats would be reopened.

Are they going to sell good oranges or malta down there? Fruit prices in BD is amonst the highest in Asia. :cheers:

Trade body targets to increase Bangladesh exports to India

The India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) hopes to increase exports from Bangladesh to India to $1 billion by June 2011.

"We hope to increase exports to India to $1 billion by June 2011," IBCCI President Abdul Matlub Ahmad said.

Referring to the trade imbalance existing between both the countries, Ahmad proposed to explore the idea of shipping ready-made and knit garments from Bangladesh to India under the duty free quota.

The IBCCI also targets to set up 100 joint venture industries in Bangladesh with a view to encourage transfer of technology and re-export goods to India with special emphasis on the North East, he said at a seminar here.

The President of the Federation of the Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Anisul Huq expressed a keen desire to invest in the joint venture cement plants with Meghalaya where the state could hold its cache of cement as equity in such ventures.

Joint efforts of trade organisations of both countries have paved the way for Bangladesh to start export of new products such as bricks to Tripura.

You mean DMRC? .... they have hand busy with the current project anyway..... E Shreedharan was however invited by Pakistan for their Metro project ( I believe as a consultant)...... Anyway .... Shree coming to BD will be seen as a conspiracy by some of your political parties!!!

Assam-Bangladesh trade improvements

Guwahati, Oct. 29: Assam industries minister Pradyut Bordoloi today said all sections of society, including politicians, would join hands together in India and Bangladesh if there was an overwhelming need for the neighbours to walk together for overall progress.

Speaking at an interactive session for a visiting Bangladesh delegation on trade and investment organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce, Bordoloi said both the regions have been closely knit for a long time.

Representatives of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry attended the session.

“The barriers will go down if there is an overwhelming opinion that both countries should walk together,” Bordoloi said.

He suggested that both the countries should form an economic bloc to strengthen relations.

A memorandum of understanding between the Down Town Charity Trust and India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry was signed to promote healthcare and education.

The Down Town Charity Trust has set up healthcare infrastructure in Assam.

The minister said a trade delegation from Assam would visit Bangladesh next year.

Anisul Huq, the president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said both the countries could progress much more, as there was a huge trade potential.

“We have enough potential to do business with Assam,” Huq said, adding that infrastructure in the border areas was still weak.

The non-tariff barrier is still a big impediment.

Abdul Matlub Ahmad, the president of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the idea of shipping readymade garments and knit garments to Assam under the duty free quota of 8 million pieces, of which still around 4 million was still unutilised, should be explored.

Ahmad said the joint efforts of the trade chambers of both the countries paid dividends and paved the way for Bangladesh to start export of products to Tripura.

“Possibilities of export of new products from Bangladesh should be explored, as the country is near Assam and there is an advantage of lower transportation costs,” Ahmad said.

He added that Assam had significant natural resources that could find markets in Bangladesh and items like limestone, coal and other minerals could be utilised to set up joint ventures.

Ravi Capoor, the commissioner of the industries and commerce department of Assam, said the Suterkandi trade centre was functioning well but the infrastructure at the corresponding site in Bangladesh was inadequate.

Trade centres are also coming up at Golokganj and Mankachar.

Well I am not sure what they are busy with. I saw in their website where they were closely watching Dhaka metro project. Its a very big project. They will go for $3 billion in one go and will be implemented in 3 years. Not like other projects they did for a long span of time in phases. Consulting phase is already over and the project is in bidding process now.

India may allow passage for Nepal trucks to Bangladesh

Dhaka, Oct 30 (IANS) India is considering granting passage to trucks from Nepal going to Bangladesh, media reports said.

The possibility of a trilateral arrangement was considered when commerce ministers of the three nations met at the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (Safta) ministerial council meeting in Kathmandu Wednesday, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) news agency reported citing an official release.

The discussion took place between Bangladesh Commerce Minister Faruk Khan and his Indian counterpart Anand Sharma.

Sharma told his Bangladeshi counterpart Col (retd.) Faruk Khan that India was developing land customs infrastructure.

Both the ministers emphasised the importance of enhancing bilateral trade.

Faruk Khan requested Sharma to withdraw the four percent special additional duty levied on items that enjoy duty-free access under Safta provisions.

The Indian minister agreed to consider it, The Daily Star newspaper said Friday.

Well I am not sure what they are busy with. I saw in their website where they were closely watching Dhaka metro project. Its a very big project. They will go for $3 billion in one go and will be implemented in 3 years. Not like other projects they did for a long span of time in phases. Consulting phase is already over and the project is in bidding process now.
