Vietnam Deploys Submarines to Scare Off China in South China Sea

It is all about convention. A modern destroyer packs more punch than a WWII cruiser. Japan even calls her LHD a destroyer. Chinese call their corvette "light frigate". Since I am an English speaking world, I just use whatever terms they use. :)

The same for Japanese maritime terminology convention. We have:

  • Helicopter Destroyer (light carrier)
  • Guided Missile Destroyer
  • Destroyer
  • Light Destroyer (Frigate)
  • Destroyer Escort (Corvette)
  • Auxilliary ships

It seems that the JMSDF retains the convention terminology of the IJN [Imperial Japanese Navy]; the PLAN retains the convention of the INGQ [Imperial Navy of Great Qing].

The reason we use it is for historical continuity, or legacy component aspect.

Also it is their largest surface ship, a good development for them.

China has detailed seabed map of SCS which vietnam doesn't.

Conclution: vietnamese submarines are not more than a joke.

The south China Sea Seabed has been detailed before as well, my friend.

. . .

Yes the Chinese insular Genesis is quite impressive, however under seabed mapping of SCS has been done already. Japan, for example, has been mapping this area decades ago.

In fact we have nearly 18000 km worth of cables around the SCS/SEA region.

How about the JMSDF comes to the SCS to stop China's domination over there?

The USN has tried many attempts, but failed.

This thread won't be fun without @Martian2 participation.

China has anti-submarine warfare capability.

1. China has a lot of nuclear and diesel-electric attack submarines. Vietnam is outgunned in quantity and quality. Also, China has decades of experience in operating attack submarines. Vietnam has no experience with their new subs.

2. China has Type 054A frigates and Type 056 light-frigates that have towed-array VDS (ie. variable depth sonar) to detect submarines. Vietnam has no such capability.

3. China has a Sino-SOSUS network in the South China Sea. Vietnam lacks this capability too.

4. Chinese South China Sea islands have helipads for Z-9C helicopters with anti-submarine warfare equipment. Vietnam does not have sub-hunting helicopters.

5. China's Y-8Q is equivalent to the American Poseidon P-3C sub-hunter airplane. Vietnam lacks aircraft with sub-hunting capabilities.

6. China can send the PLA Army to seize Vietnam and the Vietnamese naval base with the submarines. In other words, the PLA Army can easily defeat the Vietnamese navy and submarines. Without a naval base, submarines have no fuel, food, or weaponry.

In conclusion, Vietnamese diesel-electric submarines have little military value and they are not likely to survive for very long.

By the way, Japanese undersea bed mapping was supported by Chinese research as well, in fact it was a joint cooperation with local governments there. That is why Japan had successfully laid down over 18.000 km^2 of underseabed cables in region. Joint scientific collaboration.

The JMSDF is for stability and she has direct channel with the PLAN. The supreme admiral of the JMSDF communicates with the Commanding Admiral of the Combined Fleet of PLAN.

The two are not enemies but partners. Don't always be succumbed to western biased media.

Read between the lines.

Regards.

I think I posted a topic about China's deep sea sonar array back in last year, but too bad I couldn't find it anymore.

Not really, the Japanese media is just as anti-China as the western one.

I just found it.

Indeed BOTH of you are at least on par or even above PDF Think Tank quality or a mod @ "Chinese Defence Forum"

I truly think Martin should be entitled as a think tank/professional or the mod of the Chinese section.
