HIGHLIGHTS
  • Momen said that Pakistan should emulate what India and Bangladesh have done as neighbours
  • There was much talk about Pakistan's absence at ministerial level at the conference
  • There was a bilateral meeting that was held between the foreign ministers of Bangladesh and India

Bangladesh on Friday welcomed the decision of inviting India as 'Guest of Honour' at the 46th Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers held in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking exclusively to India Today, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen emphasised that given India's massive Muslim population, she should be a part of the OIC. "India is a land of cultural, religious diversity and of tolerance. 1.85 million Muslims live in India so obviously they should be part of the OIC", he said.

There was much talk about Pakistan's absence at ministerial level at the conference. When asked, the Bangladeshi minister called it "unfortunate" and told Pakistan to "look beyond".

He said that Pakistan should emulate what India and Bangladesh have done as neighbours.

"That is very unfortunate. I think it is time to look beyond. We should be mature. The relationship between Bangladesh and India has reached a height of maturity which other people should imitate", he said.

There was a bilateral meeting that was held between the foreign ministers of Bangladesh and India where all issues of convergences and differences were discussed. Bangladesh raised the issue of the Rohingya.

"We had a good meeting. Issues of mutual interest wwere discussed. We have a few challenges. One challenge is the Rohingya issue. India is with us, they are supporting and helping us, they are also helping Myanmar in building infrastructure so that they can create a conducive environment in the Rakhine State so that the Rohingya people can go back", he said.

Momen also stressed on the need for "connectivity" in the economic sphere.

"Economic is the other aspect. Connectivity is productivity. We have a long tradition of relationship of trust and confidence. We have opened up our borders and solved many major problems. Discussed new avenues of economic partnership", he said regarding the meeting with EAM Sushma Swaraj.

. . . .
Look at it from bangladesh's perspective. They wete there always are, we were too always have been bangladeshis idealise india so they were hyped to see india there a another south asian country. Perhaps under oic india would support bangladesh against burma Myanmar muslim minority genocide problem cuz duh OIC organisation of islamic countries.

But pakistan wasn't there. I think i understand bangladesh's perspective but kashmir is root cause of all our problems with india. Oic has to know it.

Stopped reading after that.

Bengalis are used to being slaves, they were colonized the longest in South Asia. They can't do anything without Indian permission, so they think slavery is natural.

I'm sorry but we are not the same people, we are the decendents of Tipu Sultan, not bahadur shah zafar.

I don't think so Rusty.

You can harp all you want about the Hasina goverment.

But Bengalis are fiercly independent minded.

So cut the racist sh@t.

. .
OIC means Organization of Islamic Countries.
India has never valued any of its declarations and will not act on 'em even if it somehow became a member and realistically it should not expect it either. This false sense of entitlement is very unhealthy plus it expects concessions it otherwise won't extend to others if the roles were reversed.

Everything I've said is facts.
Bengal was the first place to be colonized by the British.

when push comes to shove, Bangladesh cannot oppose Indian hegemony.

Just look at how their BSF treat your people.

And Bangladesh government is more pro India than even most Indians.

All this points to a nation of subservients

All of us in South Asia were colonized.

And continue to bear the repercussions of that colonization.

The current BD govt is no doubt subservient to India.

But to generalize the whole nation.....

Grow up bud.

Bangladeshi support for India is not homogenous amongst the common man.

I can't speak for those in Bangladesh, but from the Bengalis i know in the US
all whole heartedly support Pakistan/Kashmir.

Whether you recognize it or not, creating animosity between BD and PK will ultimately be bad for both BD and PK.

So cut the racist generalizations.

You guys have much more important things to worry about right now.

Bangladesh polishes shoes of India. Pakistan will never do it. Period

It’s just the stereotype I guess that the rhetoric of the bd govt of it being anti pak also reflects that of the bengali population as well it’s easy to generalize but in future I can see pak and bdesh having a good relationship

You are right we should not generalise, but the govt is dodgy.
