News was still developing at the time so I didn't know what to think of it. The rumor is it flew near that base which triggered the interception. I could be wrong if more news comes out but I don't see USAF trying to intercept Iranian planes on pretext of weapons shipments , sanctions or whatever else.

You don't need to send two jet fighters to tell a civilian aircraft that it's close to one of your military bases. Radio communications have been used for scenarios like this since World War II at least. Also, the routes for civilian aircrafts are predetermined and globally known by everyone. So, that's a really lame excuse.

The Americans are mostly active in the Eastern regions of Syria, not Damascus which is in the west and it's closer to Israel. The statement from the Syrian officials shows that they were clueless about the identity of the jet fighters. So, they could've easily mistaken them for Israeli jet fighters.

The US admitted it because they knew they had no other option. The Americans could've attempted to blame the Iranian passenger plane incident on the Iranians because it was shot down during naval skirmishes between Iranians and Americans in late 1980s during what was known as the oil tankers war but they didn't do so because they knew the truth would be revealed.
