US Vice President Mike Pence warned Turkey on Wednesday against purchasing a Russian S-400 anti-missile system, keeping up the pressure on its NATO ally to abandon the purchase that Washington considers a threat to US military equipment.

“Turkey must choose. Does it want to remain a critical partner in the most successful military alliance in history or does it want to risk the security of that partnership by making such reckless decisions that undermine our alliance?” Pence said in remarks at a NATO event in Washington.

The United States and Turkey have been at loggerheads over Ankara’s decision to purchase the S-400s, which are not compatible with NATO systems, from Russia.

Ankara had proposed to Washington that they form a working group to determine that the S-400 systems do not pose a threat to US or NATO military equipment, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday.

“It will not be integrated into the NATO system...therefore we propose the United States to establish a technical working group to make sure that this system will not be a threat - neither to (US) F-35s nor the NATO systems,” Cavusoglu told a panel in the United States.

He said it was “not our aim” to integrate the S400 system into that of NATO because “it’s for our own use.”

Turkey and the administration of US President Donald Trump need to explain to the US Congress why Ankara had to go through with the purchase from the Russians, Cavusoglu said.

Turkey says it needs the S-400s, to be delivered in July, to defend against potential security threats and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly said he would not back down from the “done deal.”

Cavusoglu, in Washington for a NATO summit, said he would “definitely” repeat this to US counterparts during his visit.

Seeking to apply pressure, the United States halted delivery of equipment related to the stealthy F-35 fighter aircraft to Turkey, its first concrete step to block delivery of the jets due to Ankara’s planned purchase of the S-400s.

A US official on Tuesday said that the purchase risked triggering sanctions. Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan later said that he expected the dispute to be resolved.

In a broader move to stop the delivery of the fighter jets, four US senators introduced a bipartisan bill last week to prohibit the transfer of F-35 aircraft until Washington can certify Turkey will not take the delivery of the S-400s.

. . . .
what a BS... how is it reckless? and isn't your new sugar-baby India also buying the same.
India is not NATO country and not getting F-35 as well from the US, so the expectations from Turkey are more than from India?

historical fact : when we decide that we need to heavy industrial base and for this purpose we have to make some Steel and Iron Industry , both USA and UK refused Shah of Iran request for helping Iran to build this kind of Industrial base and even threaten Iran ....

then Shah of Iran which was one of main allies of USA to contain Soviet forced to ask Soviet to help Iran in this matter and Soviet helped Iran ....

from USA perspective both Iran and Turkey should be limited or else they have potential to get some of their past power (Ottoman/Safavid) and kick them our from region ...

but a brotherly warning from us , even if you get F-35 or S-400 be worry about back door and kill function ....

for people who think I'm saying bullshits ....

Stuxnet is a malicious computer worm, first uncovered in 2010. Thought to have been in development since at least 2005, Stuxnet targets SCADA systems and is believed to be responsible for causing substantial damage to Iran's nuclear program. Although neither country has openly admitted responsibility, the worm is believed to be a jointly built American/Israeli cyberweapon.[1][2]

Stuxnet specifically targets programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which allow the automation of electromechanical processes such as those used to control machinery and industrial processes including centrifuges for separating nuclear material. Exploiting four zero-day flaws,[3] Stuxnet functions by targeting machines using the Microsoft Windows operating system and networks, then seeking out Siemens Step7 software. Stuxnet reportedly compromised Iranian PLCs, collecting information on industrial systems and causing the fast-spinning centrifuges to tear themselves apart.[4] Stuxnet’s design and architecture are not domain-specific and it could be tailored as a platform for attacking modern supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and PLC systems (e.g., in factory assembly lines or power plants), the majority of which reside in Europe, Japan and the US.[5] Stuxnet reportedly ruined almost one fifth of Iran's nuclear centrifuges.[6] Targeting industrial control systems, the worm infected over 200,000 computers and caused 1,000 machines to physically degrade.[7]

if they can build some cyberweapon to attack Iran isolated nuclear program devices , then they certainly are able to put some kill function and back door in their own military devices ...

.
Even Greece bought the S300 from Russia and it is also a NATO member.
Greece got its S300 from Cyprus which they had procured/got from Russia. Turkey saw it a threat to its air superiority over Cyprus and threatened it to return the system back to Russia or there will be an all out war. Cyprus then transferred its S300 to Greece in exchange of other defence hardware. Documented as as Cypriot S-300 crisis.

Greece first fired an S-300 during the White Eagle 2013 military exercise, which was the first time it was used since it had been bought 14 years earlier.

Interestingly, now Turkey wants to procure an advance version of the same system from Russia and this time the US is threatening it! :-)

-Peace

But they have BUK SAM, they have aqcuried in 2008. Why is that not a problem?

Turkey and the administration of US President Donald Trump need to explain to the US Congress why Ankara had to go through with the purchase from the Russians, Cavusoglu said.

How about the very obvious reason that US tried an illegitimate & unsuccessful coup against Erdogan's legitimate govt to install pro-US Gulen in Turkey.

. .
Turkey is well within their rights to purchase whatever Weapon system they want to make their National Interest , US is no one to dictate anyone .

.
The real reasons for this problems are

Turkey decided to break out of being a bagger state wich always buried its own programs and industry in the sand some leaders really buried something into the sand for the sake of USA

We are on a hit list decades ago ppl warned and warned about that but no one really listens

A weapon system out of control of USA is a thread only if USA has bad intentions

We faced coups almost every decade, terrorists are weponized against us, many secret organisation's inside the state, they tried an Arap ghandi spring alike this didn't work then they made ugly brutal protestors and than again terrorists and many terrorist attacks

From all sides there are traps layed by many countries UAE Israel America Saudi Arabia, Greece Russia

Now this fake F-35 shit and ppl thinking this flying computer has no backdoors and Spyware this ppl are idiots and I think russian planes and Sams have them too

We better keep on industrialization the worst part is the complete region is not industrialized and we need strong partners in the region

.
So Turkey being told they wont be a NATO member soon.

Maybe Turkey already considers itself out of NATO and working on alliances for a post NATO Turkey.
