Barack Obama India trip: President supports India on UN Security Council
Mr Obama was making the announcement in a speech to India's parliament on the third and final day of his visit. In doing so, he fulfilled what was perhaps India's dearest wish for Mr Obama's trip here. India has been pushing for permanent Security Council membership for years.
"The just and sustainable international order that America seeks includes a United Nations that is efficient, effective, credible and legitimate," Mr Obama said in prepared remarks. "That is why I can say today in the years ahead, I look forward to a reformed U.N. Security Council that includes India as a permanent member."
The announcement does not mean that India will join the five current permanent Security Council members in the near future. The U.S. is backing its membership only in the context of unspecified reforms to the council that could take years to bring about.
That makes Mr Obama's announcement more of a diplomatic gesture than a concrete step.
Nonetheless, it underscores the importance the U.S. places on fostering ties with this nation of 1.2 billion people, something Mr Obama has been seeking to accomplish throughout his time here.
Mr Obama said repeatedly throughout his three days in India first in the financial centre of Mumbai and then in the capital of New Delhi that he views the relationship between the two countries as one of the "defining partnerships" of the 21st century. He set out to prove it by making India the first stop on a four-country tour of Asia, and then through economic announcements, cultural outreach and finally the announcement about the U.N. Security Council.
India has sought permanent council membership as a recognition of its surging economic clout and its increased stature in world affairs. The U.S. endorsement is certain to deepen ties between the two countries and could also send Mr Obama's popularity in India skyrocketing to a level comparable to that enjoyed by George W. Bush. The former president is seen as a hero in India for helping end the country's nuclear isolation.

calm down. see the highlighted parts? Nobama is only doing what a lawyer does the best: Play Words With Kids .
in 2 years time, after 2012 that is, no one will remember this one-term president any more. so he can now "endorse" or "back" whatever he wants as it bears no legal or any realistic significance for the years ahead.
On the contrary, in exchange for these empty words, India is sending him real $$$. who is smarter now?
by the way, China still holds the only whip hand in the whole game.

The bickering will come from countries such as SA, Nigeria, who will demand a place for Africa, Brazil and Argentina will claim that South America needs representation, in Europe the Germans will claim that they should have a place.
In Asia Japan and South Korea, will claim they deserve a place, while Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey will want the Islamic World represented in the Security Council. So because these things are decided on consensus and currently in the world there is none, there is little or no chance in the foreseeable future of large scale change in the UN.
Pak cries foul:
An angry Pak hit out after Obama's endorsement of India's bid for a permanent seat at the UNSC.
Says US should take moral view and not base itself on temporary expediency.
SaysUSshould consider India's 'flagrant violations' of J-K UN resolutions
Reasons enough to discredit proposed directive of reforms
US endorsement of India's bid adds to complexity of reform process.
Expects UNto take a moral view.
Also most of the General Assembly want the veto removed and view permanent status to be discriminatory, so that will also be a hurdle to reform of the security council.
