US-origin M777 howitzers to add fire power to Indian Army

How Dhanush belongs to a different category?? Both M777 and Dhanush are 155MM and range is similar as well.
Only the caliber is different....

What added advantages does M777 provide other than the airlifting of Howitzers
There is no relation between Indian made Artillery, which are meant for Pakistan, where artillery can be transported by road.
And the M777 is for eastern border,

remember one thing we have compulsions to protect foreign countries too , in a case if China attack Bhutan, you have to air lift artilleries to Bhutan, the Dhanush cant do this job.

Well,Dhanush belongs to the medium weight category contrary to the M-777 which is an ultra light howitzer.Other than that, both have got different calibers.Dhanush is a 45 caliber howitzen while M-777 is a 39 caliber one.The most important difference between the two of them is the range. While Dhanush has an effective range of 30-32 km(unassisted) and 38 kms(with R.A.P.),M-777 has an effective range of 24.1 km(unassisted) and 30 kms(with R.A.P.):coffee:

Light Infantry would require for a Light Howitzer Artillery that can be forward deployable. That's mainly because there are not many country operate Airborne Artillery (A/C-130) that it would be too late to support your light troop for you to tow the heavy or medium battery into battlefield.

Another aspect is the accuracy of the rounds, while heavy artillery and medium artillery are generally use for Regimental Battery Support, lighter artillery are design to deliver a sort of "Precision" Strike package that can deal with infantry support (Via HE Shell) or AT support (Via Smart Munition or Guide Munition) There are a whole different set of munition that were created just for light artillery such as M712 Copperhead or SmArt155

Not a fan of guided artillery rounds. Artillery barrel should be controlled and moved around by a fire control computer. Artillery round should not be guided.
Because we are spending our money, time manpower etc to develop a "rocket assisted DSI projectile" for our artillery Pieces. That's more important than having a indigenous howitzer.

Can M777 be air--dropped via Transporters - C-130J, C-17? Also can they do it in the high altitudes of the Himalayas i.e Indo-China border?

. .
And yes, C-17 can drop them in the Himalayas

Air dropping on the Himalayas might damage the guns

When they land they will simply tilt and fall off the mountains

The Himalayan Mountain peaks are sharp and rugged and jagged

In This video they may be dropping the guns in a plain

We in India will use helicopters to carry these guns to far off positions ; where there are no roads

Well, not being in Himalaya so I don't know much about how rugged it was, but when I was in the Airborne, we air dropped guns all the time on mountain all the time, and we do drop them when we are in Afghanistan, probably near the same condition than in the Himalayas, but then again, I don't really know.

But all in all, you don't drop the whole gun like it is, you drop them in 4 or 5 packed pieces and you need to assemble it once it is on the ground...

it will be a bit like this...

If these guns can be dropped in boxes and then re assembled ; then it
might be possible but still I believe we will carry the whole Gun underslung

It will take time to assemble them so that it also a factor during war

Here in India we have perfected the practice of carrying 2 tonnes guns in one piece

But they are 105mm guns
Ordnance factory develops system to airlift LFGs

.
Of course.. And that God is Amrika, right..?

I really find it interesting that the moment our own programs have started to materialize, foreign companies become ready to shift their assembly lines and IA starts putting pressure on govt. BTW there is still some procedural delay in procuring these guns. And when we have waited 30 years, and Dhanush is ready to be inducted, I really don't see the pressing need to spend so much money.

I have also noticed a flood of articles praising Armata tank here and praising it to hilt. Interestingly articles about Arjun's issue also start coming when Russia unveiled Armata. We have to get out of importing such "godsend" systems for armed forces.
you are comparing danush to m777...? first do a bit of research before posting..this is not a fan boy forum!

the only advantage these M777 's are having is that they can be air lifted but they need more men and its low tech, we are buying these only because for the last 60 years our govt run ordnance factories are doing sh*t, because of the bad policies of our previous govt's we have to buy these low tech guns for huge money wasting our foreign exchange, it is said that these M777 guns are casted out of titanium is it true? please any one answer

may be to air lift these guns we need to buy chinooks, our MI-26 may not be enough, the american way of marketing:undecided:
do not blame OFB and others ! they are holy cows of first order! children of of the babus running these cash cow present here will also get offended. So lets blame IA and its love for foreign toys and u can also blame MOD .. ignoring the fact that another set of bureaucrats runs the show here again!

this shows Indian army's lack of confidence on mi-26, and why cant IA build helipads specifically for MI-26, and why cant it be upgraded by Indian companies like HAL, if there is a will any thing can be done
HAL ! hahahahaha!

and then keep on waiting for the elusive Indigenous Tech to arrive till IA is left with nothing their DIck in hand . In l;ast 25 years IA have purchased ZERO artillery .. and u want to wait them for another 25 !

.
Sir,I thought our Dhanush Howritzers were doing fine.....is there an urgent need for the M777s?

M 77 is a light weight howitzer very good for movement in mountain area and easy to carry by helicopters.

Hehehe... Sure Mr. expert... Next time I'll get my posts vetted by you...

Dhanush has cleared the trials and is ready for induction. I think it will take less than 25 years now for them to be inducted.
