“The United States’ strong geopolitical focus on Asia is a whole-of-government acknowledgement that over the next century events in Asia – from Delhi to Beijing – will drive global politics and economics,” said Geoffrey Pyatt, principal deputy assistant secretary of state, said at a conference in Muscat.
“To put an international spin on American political phraseology: As goes Asia, so goes the rest of the world,” he said at the 6th IISS-NESA South Asia Security Conference Saturday according to the transcript released by the State Department here Monday.

“US engagement in South Asia is central to our reinvigorated outreach to the entire continent,” Pyatt said noting US bilateral agenda with each country in South Asia was intended to strengthen its respective ties, address impediments, and increase security and prosperity for its peoples.

For the last four years US vigorously supported regional economic integration in South Asia, he said.

“We’ve sought to promote connectivity through the New Silk Road strategy, helping to bring South Asia closer to Central Asia in what one Foreign Minister has called the new ‘Great Gain’”, Pyatt said.

“Likewise, we’ve been vocal proponents of an Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor, which aspires to link India and the rest of South Asia to Southeast Asia through emerging road, air and sea links,” he said.

Academics and commentators readily acknowledge India as a dynamic link that “fuses” the Greater Middle East and East Asia, Pyatt said.

“Northern India, for instance, is the home of linguistic and cultural traditions of the Middle East; likewise Hindu temples are found in Bali and Cambodia. Persian language still can be found as far eastward as Bangladesh and India’s Mughal dynasty had influences emanating from Central Asia,” he said.

The economic potential of a more open and integrated South Asia is virtually unlimited, Pyatt said noting the “United States has made a strategic bet on India’s future growth which in turn rests on the wise choices of Delhi’s leadership.”

“India’s economic take-off has enabled greater influence and responsibility in the international system,” he said. “As India has shifted its engagement outward, this has opened new possibilities for commerce and connectivity with its neighbours.

Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan are but three important pieces – each “gateway countries” – to a region whose rise can decisively and positively shape global affairs, Pyatt said.

It would be helpful if US leaves leaves south Asia, The countries in South Asia know how to develop their ties with Each other. Where ever there is a rise of new powers US will go there for bilateral engagements and end product will be ultimate destruction of that region, It happened to oil rich and potentially strong nations in Middle East already.

I wonder what US will do if India and China quit this weapon race? at least against each others.... I guess Japan would be next strategic bet :D

Good point Riz. Though I don't think it is possible in the near future but I think if that happens, South Asia will become new economic and investment hub as there are huge prospect here. China has already stepped in on the right note, India is starting, Pakistan will surely follow as in Pakistan too there is huge prospect of growth as it can become third developing economy of South Asia where rest of the world will want to invest.

hey dont bet on India. US wont get anything from India if it is looking at India to help implement US policies. Yes if US wants to do trade and exchange of scientific knowledge then it is welcome to do trade and be partner in R&D with India. That way any country is welcome.

They need somebody to absorb China's 3000 nuclear warheads when world war erupts. india looks like the perfect candidate ;)

I love this guy, he decrypted the American strategy. So you mean:

China will shower 3000 nukes on India then nothing will be left for America. Then they will shower their 15000 on China and in the end both China and India will be wiped off. Finally America will rule the planet forever. Sino you are a genius.

A pathetic attempt by the US to stay relevant in a future that will see both India and China eclipse the US in military and economic power.

For now the US can provide India with high tech military equipment and provide other goodies but in the long term the US will only try to subvert India's own interests in order to meet its own. India must walk a fine line between jumping whole heatedly into the US camp and avoiding them complety.

To do so, the Chinese first have to understand that they are playing into the US cards, by threatening other Asian neighbors. That is exactly what they wanted, because now they look like the good guys and can create new ties with Asian countries like India.
The Chinese would have been smart, if they have countered this long ago by demilitarising the Tibet area and solving the border issues with India. That would have put US into disadvantage, because China could keep focus on their defence in the east, while the US still had to split forces towards the Indian Ocean area too. A simple move, with a big effect!

Do you have an extra zero? I know chinese figures are always over-rated. But by this much? Dont forget they are nuclear armed to. 50 nukes in key cities will be more than enough.
