What's new

US committed to a permanent seat for India in a reformed UN Security Council

Thats called politics, US will never close doors for India but conditioned on "reformed UN" and then goes against the reforms...lol

Right! The Yanks are used to playing games.

Anyway, getting a permanent seat in the lame duck UNSC is of zero consequence. It doesn't put more food on the table for the poor.

Everyone is playing games. It's India that is taking this game in a wrong way. Just because India achieved independence by begging does not mean that it will get unsc seat by the same method. The world respect hard power, not wimpy beggars.

Its not just India, actually 2 countries got independence through same method at the same time..the other country you wont dare to use the same choice of words, because that requires some serious guts .....

I dare you....

Desperate ,stupid and gullible people if they believe those words. They do something else and say something else.

With these criteria Japan (pacific not imperial) fits more on the bill so does Germany & UK should have no place in UNSC as it is just a state of USA.
Its a simply WW2 order.
Even diplomats know that it is just lollypop but you need to remind that you are contender to the world nothing else.
After 15 years what influence UK & France bring compare to India ?
So india should make its separate league like they did in cricket :-D :-D

China+Russia+America have already made it plain that they are firmly opposed to any change in veto powers.

That's what they say openly.

In practice though, they are even shutting down any "discussion" on UNSC reform.

As for Germany, they are already a part of the P5+1.

Well then ask again in 15 years.

It's a case of say one thing and do another. Just like I said on the original thread. These statements were to be expected.

Considering that the US recently rejected even having a debate (along with Russia and China) to any changes to the structure to the UNSC, against Indian demands, I highly doubt the US is serious.

The Americans are using India, they'll never seriously give a permanent seat to another nation, creating another potential rival at the council.

How is india rival to USA

Actually India don't care about a UNSC seat. UN is a toothless organization. What would make the world sit and take notice of India is if India grows and become the world's economic engine. UNSC has become more of a prestige issue for India than anything else.

Well politics and all this subtle narratives aside, there will come a time eventually when they can't ignore the significance and importance of a reshuffled UNSC with India and other developing/developed counties in it. All we have to do now is focus on our growth (economy, military, social) and not get too sidetracked with these no issues.. We've survived and we'll survive without a permanent UNSC seat..

You are right....In next decade or so trade blocks and sub regional grouping would take precedence over a multilateral bodies such as UN. The best strategy, as you said, is to keep calm and develop economy.

These are just political & diplomatic tussle nothing more.
Current UNSC is a WW2 era setup which is in her last stage.
In 15 years we outpace UK & France in economically & militarily & already have outpaced Russia economically.
Japan is shelving his pacific attitude & Germany is undisputed emperor of EU.
Current trend in Brazil is not optimistic but I am hopeful for future.
This all situation makes 2 members of UNSC inappropriate for world security council.
true. India,Germany,Japan and Brazil (in future) deserves seat in UNSC.

LMAO.....so you really believe you have more influence than we and France.

India redraws UNSC bid

“The U.S. and these other countries cannot veto U.N. reform, which will be decided by the General Assembly, where each country has one equal vote,” an official source told The Hindu. “We are confident that if India’s candidature is presented there, we would win the seat easily.”

If it comes to a vote, India will need the support of at least 129, or two-thirds, of the 193 member-states.

In letters to the U.N.’s special committee in charge of inter-governmental negotiations in July, Russia and China made it clear that they are not in favour any large-scale reforms of the U.N.’s prized P-5 (permanent five) structure that gives them and the U.S., the U.K. and France a special status on all international issues. The U.K. and France support India’s position.

Sources said the government was particularly surprised by the letter of U.S. Ambassador Samantha Powers that said the U.S. was “open to a modest expansion” of the membership, and wanted specific countries that would be considered to be named in advance, thereby rejecting the current text-based process that India had been pushing for. “This document puts into doubt everything the U.S. has conveyed to India bilaterally on the issue,” one diplomat told The Hindu.

Negotiations over reform and expansion of the U.N. Security Council have run on for more than seven years, and Indian officials feel that the fact that countries have committed to positions is a positive development for the process. If, however, one of the P-5 countries — for instance, China — decides to veto a resolution to accept the document, India’s hopes for a permanent seat in the near future will be in danger. “We would be back to square one unless that happens,” an official said.

If United Kingdom and France supports India to get a permanent seat then it means that even United States supports it as United States, United Kingdom and France all are equally worried by the Russian Federation as Russian Federation has already use veto during the 2008 Georgian war and then in favor of Syria and recently during the MH 17 investigation .

Russian Federation is using veto's against United states and EU's interests.

Focus on growing economy, GDP per capita and military power than other nations like Russia, UK and France and then demand permanent seat.
