Members of the United Nations Security Council

The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors Thursday to address the Turkish military operation against Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria.

The discussion by the 15-member Security Council was requested by the five European members, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium and Poland, diplomats said.

On Wednesday, France, Britain and Germany were prepared to issue a statement strongly condemning Turkey’s operation, French European Affairs Minister Amélie de Montchalin said.

The three countries “are finalizing a joint statement that will be extremely clear on the fact that we condemn very strongly and firmly what has been reported,” Montchalin told Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee in response to a question about Turkey’s moves.

She added that a separate European Union statement from the bloc’s 28 states had yet to be agreed on because some countries had not signed it, according to Reuters. One source said Hungary had blocked the statement.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker urged Turkey to “halt its military operation.”

US Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), usually reliable allies of President Trump, assailed him Wednesday after Turkey began its offensive.

Activists gather in front of the White House to protest President Trump’s decision to withdraw US forces from northeast Syria.

“Pray for our Kurdish allies who have been shamelessly abandoned by the Trump Administration. This move ensures the reemergence of ISIS,” Graham said in a tweet. Referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Graham vowed to lead congressional efforts “to make Erdogan pay a heavy price.”

He added: “I urge President Trump to change course while there is still time by going back to the safe zone concept that was working.”

Cheney called the situation “sickening” and said it was “impossible to understand why @realDonaldTrump is leaving America’s allies to be slaughtered and enabling the return of ISIS.”

France, Britain, Germany to condemn Turkish offensive in Syria
OCTOBER 9, 2019 / 11:26 PM /

PARIS (Reuters) - France, Britain and Germany are set to issue a statement strongly condemning Turkey’s offensive in northeastern Syria, France’s European affairs minister said on Wednesday.

Turkey launched a military operation against Kurdish fighters in northeast Syria on Wednesday just days after U.S. troops pulled back from the area, with air strikes and artillery hitting YPG militia positions around the border town of Ras al Ain.

The move comes after a U.S. decision to withdraw from the region leaving Turkey to launch an offensive against Kurdish militants and rattling allies, including France, one of Washington’s main partners in the U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State.

“France, Germany and Britain are finalizing a joint statement that will be extremely clear on the fact that we condemn very strongly and firmly what has been reported,” Amelie de Montchalin told parliament’s foreign affairs committee answering a question on the Turkish offensive.

Capitals were still deciding at what level the statement would be issued, a diplomatic source said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned Recep Tayyip Erdogan against undermining peace efforts as the Turkish military began an incursion across the border into Syria against Kurdish forces.

“In the light of Turkey’s announced plans to carry out a military operation in the northeast of Syria, Vladimir Putin urged our Turkish partners to carefully weigh the situation so as not to damage our joint efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis,” the Kremlin said in an emailed statement on a call between the two leaders Wednesday.

The presidents stressed “the importance of guaranteeing the unity and territorial integrity of Syria and respect for its sovereignty,” the Kremlin statement said.

The first Turkish troops crossed Wednesday into northeast Syria in preparation for a full-scale offensive to force back Kurdish militias controlling the border area, a Turkish official said, days after President Donald Trump said the U.S. wouldn’t stand in the way.

Kuwait says Turkish military operation in Syria threatens regional stability

Xinhua, October 10, 2019

KUWAIT CITY, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The military operation launched by the Turkish army in Syria poses a direct threat to the security and stability in the region, Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"The military escalation risks undermining the chances of political solution sought by the international community after the tangible progress made in the quest for peace in Syria," an official source at the ministry said.

The source called on all parties concerned to exercise self-restraint and avoid resorting to military option that could exacerbate the suffering of the Syrian people.

In addition, he stressed the need to realize the aspirations of the Syrian people and maintain Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

Turkey launched airstrikes aimed at crushing Kurdish fighters in northern Syria on Wednesday after U.S. troops pulled back from the area.
