I do too.. I would never trust the US to the hilt but as it stands they're trying to cosy up to RW to catch up on lost grounds to China.. They know they lost the plot a bit.. Imagine the two scenario's mate.. A Int investigation with the govt has no say whatsoever totally dominated by bloodsuckers of the AI,HRW etc.. Remember the damage the Darusman report did, The nation is still suffering from it.. For their own ulterior motives now have agreed to a domestic inquiry, Something that the govt will have a big say in and time, Very important thier own time to conduct.

Now we can all be chest beating about sovereignty and being patriotic on political platforms and online forums with silly meme's and being jackasses day and night, But the fact remains when the push comes to shove the US holds the key.. Without them on side of the govt for whatever reason they are, SL would have been seriously f*cked.. Veto's from China or Russia would not have prevented the embargoes that the country would have had to face.. 73% of export market is the US and EU, They feed the country unfortunately not our diplomatic friends China and Russia

Protest in Chennai against U.S. support to SL in war probe ::: Dailymirror.lk ::: Breaking News

As a mark of protest against the U.S. supporting Sri Lanka in war crime probe, a group of members from Ilaiya Thalaimurai Koottamaippu, an outfit comprising youngsters, threw rotten chicken waste into a KFC outlet in Ashok Nagar in central India on Saturday afternoon.

The group also attempted to stage a protest outside the U.S. Consulate in Chennai. According to police, the group had earlier submitted a petition to the Consulate last month and gave 100 hours time for the U.S. government to change its stand on the investigation into the ‘genocide.’

“The time given by them expired by Saturday noon. Due to this, a few members of the outfit entered the KFC outlet in Ashok Nagar at 12.45 p.m. and littered it with rotten chicken. They also raised slogans against the U.S.,” a police source said.

After this, the same group went to the U.S. Consulate. A member attempted to douse himself with petrol on Cathedral Road and tried to barge into the Consulate. The police nabbed him and another member who also attempted to get inside.

Five members headed by Iniyan were detained.(The Hindu) -

Simple answer. UNP is pro West. AFAIK we never had the so called balanced foreign policy. It was either West or East. MR was for East and RW is for West.

The answer is both and some more.
While more balanced foreign policy helps without the UNP's pro-west policies and having an ideology similar to western countries helped a lot and they had very close relations with the US and West even when they were in the opposition

With a friendly government in power US got a really good ally in South Asia and they want to keep it that way.
This is mostly because of US interests but its a win-win situation. both the US and Sri Lanka can achieve their national interests

The policy would be balanced and the US will increase their investments and aid to Sri Lanka alongside Japan and EU.

We need the US right now to somehow get through the UNHRC unscathed, Only the Americans the prime movers can do it.. Horses for courses.. Does not mean we have to rely on them or trust them, Believe me i will be the last one to propagate a pro US policy, SL have learned from the past on not to rely on them exclusively.. It's a bi polar world right now so unlike then, You have options, Be smart use every one for your advantage thats what diplomacy is, Not chest beating and getting screwed from behind

Our friends Russia and China will veto it at the UNSC but the economic and bilateral consequences will be immense.. Ofcause you're overestimating SL if you think a country solely depending on export services and high end goods will not be devastated if they decide to take bilateral trade embargoes, Remember they dont need the UN resolution to get to the SC to do that, Russia nor China will be able to stop that.. And they are not the countries that pay for our goods and services

You cant rely on them too much, US has it's own interests but small strategic nations like SL cant afford to take sides, More prudent is to use all sides for it's benefit, The US and even India acknowledges now that it lost the plot to China, Last few years so they are making amendments to that, Best SL can do is make use of that.. As far as the US goes as i reiterated earlier best is to keep the enemies close

I am in Sri Lanka right now. If you are willing to give me a house for free, food and other necessities, I would not be afraid of US embargoes. We can be another Iran with worse circumstances.

You are right, there's no balanced foreign policy. Only a handful of powerful countries like China, US can have independent foreign policies unfortunately. The rest have to align with someone but the key is to make most of the party that you align into.
