Having a real active Space program encompasses more than having a crude launch pad. It also involves commercial launch services , design,manufacture/launch and operation of satellites(including applications, services and data provided by these satellites), communication equipments, space exploration equipment, avionics used in space systems etc.
Moreover ,We are part of ESA(one of the founding members as well), so no need for us to build another lunch pad(except if we can do it cheaper). The only situation where we will build one ourselves is if we can do it at a more competitive rate than what Pan European Ariane space launcher is currently capable of doing and which offers more advantages, which is why our defence giant BAE systems and British government are investing in groundbreaking Skylon sabre engines space plane project which will offer a more competitive/cheaper single-stage to orbit satellite lunch and recovery platform. It's because we have examined,analysed and seen that it is feasible and competitive enough that's why our government and defence company decided to go ahead and finance it's development and they are about to build a spaceport for its lunches by 2020. We are a capitalistic country where only ROI is considered first and foremost not prestige stuffs. Lol
As I said several times , it's all about competitiveness. If we already have a pan European organisation which does it cheaper we will not have gone ahead with this project. Using your logic Germany who lunched and pioneered the world first rockets can't build a rocket on its own to put a satellite in space? lol Why will they waste resources doing it alone thus duplicating European resources, when there's already a viable powerful European launch system available which they are part of. As I said don't confuse competitiveness/economies of scale with lack of capabilities dude.
In fact even as it stands the U K still has a far bigger space industry than most powers apart from U.S, Russia and maybe China. Iran and N.Korea space industry is still way behind that of Britain. We currently have almost 7% of worlds space industry market dude worth almost $16.5billion dollars(almost £12billion) as of 2013, today it's almost $20billion dollars (almost £15billion )and growing estimated to reach over £40billion(about $50billion) by 2030. How many does the countries you mentioned have?
Similarly a British-built rover is to sent to the red planet through ESA and we dominate the world's segment of small satellites. Etc. That's even taking into consideration the fact that our space industry is exclusively led by Private companies , (including British business/technology Mogul Richard Branson's virgin company, who is looking to increase his space investment in Britain) no state company or government is involved per se. Yet the industry is growing and excelling quite well .
So just because we don't go around singing our praises and boasting about every thing we do doesn't means you should think we are not less CAPABLE.
Having a credible active Space program is not just about just launching a satellite in space (which we will be doing hopefully soon with skylon). It's more than that dude. As I said before read before you spew nonsense .
