Twenty most violent countries in the world: Photos

Theek hai yaar, we are a violent society, accept it and move on - it will make some people happy at least - given the state of their own lands, they deserve that bit of happiness at least, lets not deny them that. Now let me cower inside my house while rival gangs do a shoot-out in the street outside killing dozens of innocent civilians, and a suicide bummer blows himself up at a public gathering. God, I'll be lucky if I see 40.

This reminds me of a list brought out by 'reporters without borders' which puts India below worthies such as Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Nigeria - as per the list, these countries have more press freedom compared to India (Or Pakistan for that matter). As a retired business journalist who has done more than a few articles/edits criticizing the central government/cabinet ministers/parties of ruling coalitions, I find it funny that these jokers rate Indian press as less free than regimes where criticizing the sheikh/preacher-in-chief can make you vanish without a trace. But I guess I'm just a journalist practising his trade in India, what would I know about the state of Indian journalism - these reporters without borders are probably better judges than I am. Or for that matter, some random keyboard warrior spewing venom knows more of press freedom in India than I do - going by the claims I encounter.

Usually more open societies, where crimes/incidents are reported more frequently, get a short shrift in such cases. For instance, I recall someone boasting in this forum once that 'there are zero rapes in Saudi Arabia' - I think that may simply be because the crime doesn't get reported/law doesn't recognize many incidents as rape (say absence of 4 witnesses).

The best way to deal with them is to accept them and move on - and let the absurdity play itself out. Time has sharp teeth which grind everything.
