US President Donald Trump announced his intention to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia making their first face-to-face meetup since Trump's return to office. This announcement followed a nearly 90 minute phone conversation between two leaders they discussed strategies for resolving ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump expressed trust about achieving peace noting that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy desire end to the war. He suggested that negotiations between their respective teams would commence "immediately". Trump's inclination toward Saudi Arabia as the meeting location stems from his and Putin's established relationships with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. According to Donald Trump the Crown Prince's influence and Saudi Arabia's growing role as a mediator in the dispute between Russia and Ukraine make it the perfect place for talks.
Trump's choice to speak with Putin and look into a possible settlement to the conflict in Ukraine marks a change from earlier US policy. Trump asked President Zelenskyy but it's still a little unclear exactly what Ukraine's involvement in the negotiations is. The previous president has emphasized the need for cooperation between the two countries. In contrast to the last government, there is a chance that Moscow and Washington will try to mediate a truce without Kyiv's direct participation. In addition Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of an agreement with Ukraine that would allow the US to obtain Ukrainian rare earth materials in return for ongoing assistance. These events come amid remarks made by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has said that a return to pre-2014 borders is not possible and that Ukraine's participation in NATO is unachievable.
The Kingdom's expanding position as a global mediator, utilizing its ties to both Russia and Ukraine, is highlighted by the possible meeting in Saudi Arabia. In the past, Saudi Arabia has hosted President Zelenskyy at an Arab League meeting and organized prisoner exchanges between the two nations. Mediating disputes gives Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman the chance to establish himself as a world leader with clout outside of the Middle East.
While discussions are still in preliminary stages planned meeting between Trump and Putin in Saudi Arabia represents a significant step toward exploring a potential resolution to protracted conflict in Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised U.S. President Donald Trump's diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine particularly the willingness of Trump to engage in direct conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Lavrov expressed surprise at global reaction to the Putin-Trump call on 12 February noting that it was treated as an extraordinary event while he viewed it as a normal civilized conversation between two well-mannered people. He contrasted this approach with what he sees as the West's normalization of Kyiv's aggressive rhetoric toward Russia.

Lavrov has also lauded Trump's past comments on NATO expansion viewing them as an acknowledgement that NATO misled Russia when it expanded eastward. Trump stated that Russia firmly believed Ukraine's accession to NATO should be prohibited, and Lavrov stated, "N did exactly it had not to, and Trump acknowledged that". Lavrov believes any potential peace negotiations must address Russia's security apprehensions and reflect a comprehensive European security landscape.

While praising Trump's approach, Lavrov also criticized the outgoing Biden administration for providing Kyiv with maximum military support and imposing new sanctions targeting Russia's oil sector characterizing these actions as an effort to complicate matters for the incoming Trump administration. Despite this Ukrainian officials have signaled an openness to hearing Trump’s peace proposals. Lavrov expressed hope that the Putin-Trump call would serve as an example for Western politicians on how diplomacy should be conducted. He emphasized the importance of sitting down talking and searching for common ground.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reporting that a Russian attack drone carrying a high-explosive warhead struck the protective shelter over the destroyed fourth reactor of Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant NPP on the night of 14 February 2025. Zelenskyy stated that the shelter known as the New Safe Confinement was built through international cooperation to contain the remnants of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster and prevent radiation leaks.

According to Zelenskyy attack caused significant damage to the shelter but initial assessments indicate that radiation levels remain stable. Emergency responders extinguished resulting fire and radiation levels are being continuously monitored. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed an explosion occurred at the Chornobyl NPP over sarcophagus protecting the remains of reactor No.

Zelenskyy condemned Russia's actions calling it a terrorist threat to entire world. He highlighted that Russia continues to attack Ukrainian infrastructure and cities every night and shows no change in its rhetoric indicating that Putin is not preparing for negotiations but deceiving the world. Zelenskyy called for unified international pressure on Russia to be held accountable for its actions. Andriy Yermak head of Presidential Office stated that the attack proves Russia is a threat to the whole world and that Putin's military deliberately attacked Chornobyl NPP at night. Andriy Kovalenko head of National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation noted that situation is currently stable but Russians are deliberately launching drones over the ChNPP, posing a nuclear threat to the world.

WAS ZELENSKYY'S NUCLEAR SHELTER HIS OWN? KREMLIN CONSIDERS SO

Maria Zakharova from the Foreign Affairs Ministry:

"The Kiev dictatorship has committed another crime with the provocation at Chernobyl NPP.

Kiev needs a frightening and risky performance each time to lobby for money and arms supply, as well as to allow Western media to run anti-Russian information campaigns.
