"Propellant accounts for 80 to 85% weight of Rocket"

Source> "Gatha Isrochi", a marathi book written by Dr. Vasant Govarikar, EX ISRO Scientist

this above fact is crucial.

Agni 3 weights 48 tons

without its 1.5 Ton payload it weighs 46.5 Tons.

From above fact mentioned it can be assumed that Propellant accounts for 80% weight of Nuclear Missile.

Hence weight of Propellant in Agni 3 is 46.5x80%=37.2 Tons

Hence weight of Agni 3 without payload and propellant will be just 9.3 Tons

now we know that both stages of Agni 3 are made of Maraging Steel.

so if DRDO uses Composites and reduces weight by 15%, empty weight of new Agni 3( lets call it Agni 3 M) will be 7.44 Tons (without payload and Propellant)

now we all know ," less payload=more range".

in case we reduce payload by 10%, range increases by 10%.

so if Agni 3 M has its both stages made of composite it will weigh 44.64 Tons (46.5-15% of 46.5) and 46.14 Tons with 1.5 Ton Payload.

reducing weight of missile is like reducing payload

less payload=more range

so this new Agni 3 M with 46.14 Tons weight (1.86 Tons less than Current Agni 3) and having ability to be canister ed can easily have minimum range of 5,000 KM while Retaining Payload of 1.5 Tons

and if we reduce payload it's range will be 6,000 KM

the 3rd stage may be a post boost vehicle

so in my opinion, DRDO has used the above technique to turn Agni 3 into Agni 5

i would appreciate your opinion friends

First of all, at 46.14 tons, its weight would be only under 4% less than Agni III's weight. So the increase in range would be no more than 5% at max.

Agni V needs another stage in addition to the 2 stages of Agni III, to be able to make it past 5000 kms.
In addition to use of composites, I believe there will be an introduction of new propellants. We can not keep adding more propellant to increase range everytime.

well brother i doubt if the range would increase from 3000 to 5000 km......don't you think so?

the 9.3 tons is empty weight of Agni 3 which is the weight of metallic stages of Agni 3

the 37.2 tons is the propellant weight which drives missile

so if we reduce empty weight of missile it will make huge difference in case of range ( as my understanding Suggests)

doesn't reducing payload by just 20 to 30% increases range by 20 to 25%?

so why the thing i am suggesting is not possible?

this weight doesn't contribute any thing to range just like payload.

it is already known thats agian v will have 3 stage rocket

^^ yes i know it

well you are not wrong.....in agni 5 composites will be used extensively to reduce weight....and with some more modifications it can be achieved......lets see.

Rather school boy like calculations for a 'scientist'! Most scientific developments are incremental in nature. A particular model is perfected and improved to progress to the next model unless there is an infusion of new technology somewhere in the loop in which case there is a qualitative jump to the next model. Like jagjitnatt said, I am of the view that :-
Agni 3 + composites for weight reduction + newer and more efficient propellant + an additional stage + improved guidance system = Agni 5.

Reducing payload by 20% won't increase range by 20-25%. This is a serious rumor spread on PDF and other forums.

Only the last stage will have its range increased in case of reduced payload. The other stages will not be affected much.

Let assume a 2 stage missile with a weight of 50 tons carrying a 1 ton payload here.

Its first stage has to lift 51 tons. And its second stage will lift some 5 tons.

If its payload is reduced by 50%,

Its first stage will have to lift 50.5 tons, and its second stage will lift some 4.5 tons.

So you see, that the difference in weight is very less, and can not increase range up to 50%. If that was the case, an empty missile would have twice the range.

IND151 you can easily apply yur theory with Agni 2 & 4 and correlate with facts..

Also look out for other factors in agni 4 as other members suggested..

though Agni 5 is in different league.. atleast we can check our theory..;)

you are not wrong IND1
composites are used and weight is reduced, with more efficient light weight fuel and an extra stage is installed.

i think new fuel wont be lightweight.

it will have same weight, will be advanced, complex but will have capacity to produce 30 to 40% more thrust/power

for ex, if current 1 Kg Propellant of Agni produces 10 Kg thrust New Propellant of 1 Kg will produce 13 to 14 Kg thrust.

so our missiles will need less propellant for achieving same range which in turn will create room for more propellant thus increasing range of our missiles by 30 to 35%

P.S> i think DRDO has already used new propellant on Agni 4
