ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Tesla Inc chief executive Elon Musk met on Wednesday to discuss cooperation between Tesla, SpaceX and Turkish firms, Turkey’s presidential spokesman said.

Musk, who is in Turkey to attend the Global SatShow in Istanbul, met Erdogan and Turkey’s transportation and industry ministers at the presidential palace in Ankara.

Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said Musk and Erdogan discussed potential joint operations between Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), Musk’s SpaceX company and Turkish firms, as well as the launch of Turkey’s Turksat 5A and 5B satellites.

“We also exchanged views on what sort of joint operations Turkish firms could have with the SpaceX and Tesla companies,” Kalin was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Turkey aims to launch the Turksat 5A satellite in 2020 and the 5B in 2021. In October, Airbus (AIR.PA) submitted the best bid in a tender to build the Turkish satellites.

Kalin said an agreement would be signed with Airbus on Thursday, and Musk would also be present at the meeting as a subcontractor.

Musk’s SpaceX plans its first trip to Mars in 2022, carrying only cargo, to be followed by a manned mission in 2024.

Kalin also said Erdogan and Musk had discussed electric cars, days after Turkey unveiled plans to launch a car made entirely in Turkey by 2021, which the president cast as a long-harbored dream of the Turkish people.

I'm hoping second Tesla factory in Europe will be in Turkey. This would benefit both parties significantly while any space related discussion would benefit Turkey very little. It is highly doubtful that spaceX needs components from us in big volumes or They would help any other company to make re usable rockets. Even though I personally know Some Turkish companies sold machinery to SpaceX for making components for Falcon Rockets.

SpaceX Falcon9 rocket models are so interesting.

Gigafactory is not an easy investment. Gigafactory is not even done in US, and construction will keep continue in next 5-6 years and production will be x5+ more. Gigafactory is also being funded by US government. Turkish government budget is not strong to do such support into $10+billion project.

But battery technology is also so important for future's electrical cars. %80+ of the car's manufactory expenses comes from batteries.

The best choice for Turkey is, building one small battery company with private companies, and slowly enlarge it in next 30 years, then stop selling oil based cars.

You mean 4 stroke engine, i can guarantee you that gasoline engines always will be the part of the motor vehicles. Netherlands is the biggest investor in the EU when it comes to electrical vehicles. They fund loading station for your home, but ther are many question about the car. The biggest problem is the battery. Expensive shit i can tell you.

Indeed, but with more investing into battery technology and increasing quantity of produced battery, prices are falling down really fast

In next 3 decades, electrical cars will be cheaper than most gasoline engine cars.

Btw most of EU states are getting ready to ban selling gasoline engine cars after 2025-2030. Turkey produces nearly 1.5m cars per year, and biggest market is EU.

After 2025-2030, where we will sell those cars to? Africa? o_O We will either create one strong electrical car company or find someone else to invest in Turkey and produce his own cars in Turkey, or.. we will just turn back to 2001 economic crisis o_O

They will never ban gasoline, range of a electrical vehicle is shit. I did talk to a engineer of Mercedes in a fair. Het told in 2015 we will stop with producing gasolone engine, that was 12 years ago. Hond made his first electric car in 1999. After 2050 we will still using gasoline, ther is no battery you can charge fast like feuling your car. Electric car is for rich people.
