Turkish Naval Programs

This is not a Turkish ship... For the first time i saw a ship like this...

Guys can you give some info about this ship... And do we need such a ship ?..

And some other ship examples of this kind...

I have heard of this ship, but when i have seen i could give only one possibility, it should be from somewhere on north sea ( norwegian ,sweden, netherland , germany ) because those countries have good design companies which works on non-conventional ships by tailor-made style.

Its an oil recovery ship , which comes against current where oil leakage is appeared , pumps water into ship, separates oil and water and pumps water back into sea . There are only 2 ships in German Navy commissioned.

Our recently commissioned SAR vessels have this capability of separating oil and water but its done in conventional way , by deploying barrier on water , pulling it by one of RHIB on the ship and, trapping oil which flows with current by maneuvering mother ship . And then hydrolic driven equipment is deployed on sea from fore deck of ship , separates oil and water and pumps oil back on ship .Possibly, some other Coast guard vessels have the capability of deploying barrier on water.
To be honest, i attented these tests of recent SAR vessels, it took long time to deploy barriers need to pump air for each section of barrier, let them on sea and simultanously keeping position of downed barriers by RHIB. I cant say it was effective, takes long time and the equipment which separates oil and water isnt that effective one too. **Separator mentioned as oil skimmer , it was similar to this one.

Do we need this kind of ship ? i dont think we need one , Our SAR ship wouldnt be efficient either ,to keep oil pollution on Straits ,since current is too fast and chaotic. I have seen one particle based CFD analysis of possible pollution on Istanbul strait and time domained diagram was really chaotic, which is derived by lots of parameters includes temperature, other ship's paths and current isnt stable because of turns in strait of istanbul. So, to brief all , This ship has speed of 10 knots ( which you shared picture ) and this isnt enough to catch oil in our straits, to reach anywhere on our shores before than oil spreads ;our ship would serve in the same performance for our needs ,even better when we consider it can hit to high speeds to reach anywhere on time.

I was suprised when i saw that ship too the platform carrier one, they are operated by Dockwise company ( even name shows what that ship is doing :woot: ) last ship is in here ; she can carry her older sister when loaded.

I also like ice breaking, polar class ships, which breaks ice though and goes in South pole, i think we need one of them for polar research operations, as long as i know Turkey still doesnt have a station on Antartica, this ship will be 1st step ;

there was a visit on Antartica , an academician and explorer went to there in 2013 and waved our flag ; She gave too many efforts to negotiate this issue for 2014 budget but as we see its not included in 2014 budget , i dont know whether 2015 budget is negotiated already but lets see it , it will be great if we have one large base , with small stations around, with a logistic polar class supply vessel.

Its the same as being member at Cern, you have to do such works if you wanna become a country with decent scientific output.

Yes, science is so important but i specificly asked... I mean which fields... Also main benefits... I'm sure so many different researches can be made but no need to mention all of them 1 by 1... So i asked most beneficial researches...

Thats a hard question i mean for exsample teflon is a product of NASA space research but today we use it almost in every field so you never know how the results of a reseach can be used.

2- will have chance to cooperate on scientific researchs with other countries.

3- will have right to speak out when treathy of antartica revised in 2048 , there are plenty of oil resources, mines in antartica

4- Polar circle is where observatory satellites uses as pivot points in orbits, pass through there in each circle, can be used as data link point .

5- Advanced scientific research, may begin with geology , maritime biology ( diversity in waters hit to high ) , astronomy ,oceanography ,tectonics, also in sources its told, experiments done in arctic is not reproducable in other place on the world, thanks to thinner atmoshphere, radiation from space can be observed better.

6- Global warming, climate change , ozone layer depletion , its like hometown to watch these for meteorology science.

And most of all, cooperation is crucial point of all,being in contact in there is like having a module in International Space Station . Actually both of places have similar specifications ,and same importance for experiments .

Actually,by science you cant get direct outputs,and cant see a solid benefit , while outputs from science is like ingredients you will use in development of products.

Does turkey have the Industrial capacity to do things like this?

For CFD capacity by supercomputers or model tests , industry doesnt have capacity nor knowledge (they might be doing this with workstations with basic models) . So ,its done in institutes mostly. Even well known companies uses systems in institutes.

@Aegis DDG , i forgot to add something further, what i talk is about Industrial capacity of CFD solution for Naval architecture only , i exclude Aerial CFD for this matter. Else, Roketsan has ability of this, as well as other companies , like TAI and UAV manufacturers

A good research done 4 years ago , might pave a way for our future FAC design, not the incoming one as Turkish type FAC, but further ones;

There was a joint project ongoing with cooperation of ; International Paint, Ltd. (England), Bureau Veritas (France), Damen Shipyards (Netherland), İTÜ (Turkey), Ketting Atlas Copco (Netherland), New-Logistics (Germany), SSPA (Switzerland), DST (Germany), Veerhaven (Netherland) ve Imtech (Netherland) , while Turkey joins with and University and only University member of concorcium, Project was coordinated by MARIN ,one of the best research institute after David Taylor Model Basin of USA and Krylov of Russia . Members of concorsium ;

contribute a ship to be fitted and tested with SMOOTH technology. They represent typical end-users for the system.



Objective of research ;

The strategic objective of SMOOTH is to cover all aspects of air-lubricated ships still requiring research and assessment to enable the technology transfer of air-lubrication into daily European shipbuilding and operation practice of both inland and coastal navigating ships. The PELS project, a Dutch national project, demonstrated a positive overall energy win is achieved in all operational conditions of a ship when air lubrication is applied. The SMOOTH consortium estimates that ship efficiency improvements up to 20% will be feasible.
SMOOTH aims at a considerable reduction of fuel consumption, CO2 discharge with at the same time improved safety by applying new, vanguard technologies. The application of this promising technique will strengthen the position of European shipbuilders.

Two important factors in ship safety are frictional resistance and stopping performance. Frictional resistance of a ship can be influenced by switching on and off the air-lubrication. Also the stopping performance of ships can be improved noticeably when air -lubrication is applied. For example in cases when there is danger of collisions and groundings, sometimes leading to severe environmental pollutions.

Controlled result dissemination is enabled by the installation of a Supervisory Board, supporting the control of the running project by interested end-users and being exclusively legitimated to receive the results of the research.


Outputs of Research ;

To develop air-lubrication system which uses air pumping ,or CO2 either super- cavitation to generate air flow on the hull, thus reducing vibration in high turbulance region and lowering fuel consumption / required installed power on ship . By reduction of turbulance and Wave making resistance, installed power is reduced or paved way for higher speeds.
