Turkey choose Dornier 328 as their passenger aircraft..

Başbakan Ahmet Davutoğlu, Milli Savunma Bakanı İsmet Yılmaz ve Genelkurmay Başkanı Orgeneral Necdet Özel’in katılımıyla yapılan Savunma Sanayi İcra Komitesi (SSİK) ilklere imza attı. Savunma Sanayi Müsteşarlığı’nda (SSM) gerçekleştirilen ve yaklaşık 2 saat süren toplantıda yerli yolcu uçağı için harita çıktı. Toplantıya ilk defa Ulaştırma Haberleşme ve Denizcilik Bakanı Feridun Bilgin de katıldı.

Projede, tasarım ve imalat hakkı Amerika’da yerleşik Eren ve Fatih Özmen’in sahip olduğu Sierra Nevada Corperation’a (SNC) ait, Almanya menşeli Dornier’in 328 modeliyle ilerlenmesine karar verildi. 2002'de iflas eden şirketin hem turboprop hem de jet motorlu modeli 328’in tasarım, imalat ve geliştirme haklarına SNC ile birlikte ortak olunacak.

Plana göre ilk etapta toplam 50 uçak imalatı gündemde. Bu uçaklar sivil tasarıma sahip. Ancak yapılacak modifikasyonlar ile askeri amaçlı da kullanılabilecek. 328 serisinin pervaneli modeli, Amerikan Hava Kuvvetleri tarafından kullanılıyor. Projenin maliyetleri Savunma Sanayi Destekleme Fonun’dan karşılanacak. Ana yüklenici olarak Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik STM şirketi imalat ve tasarımda koordinasyonu gerçekleştirecek.

Almanya merkezli Dornier şirketi, dünyanın en eski uçak imalatçıları arasında yer alıyor. Şirket, 1980’lerin sonunda geliştirdiği 30 koltuklu turboprop motorlu 328 serisi ile bölgesel havacılıkta farklı bir segmente geçmeyi hedefledi. Önceden tasarladığı Dornier 228 gibi uçakların kapasitleri 20 koltuğa kadar çıkıyordu.

İlk uçak 6 Aralık 1991’de uçtu. Bunu sertifikasyon sonrasında Ekim 1993’te hizmete girmesi izledi. Koltuk kapasitesi 30 ila 33 arasında değişiyordu. Ancak uçağın pazara sunulması sırasında ATR42, Saab 2000 gibi uçaklar, bölgesel pazarda koltuk kapasitesini yukarı doğru yani 50 koltuk ve üzerine çekti.

Bu gelişmeler yaşanırken Dornier, uçağın turboprop motorlarını jetle değiştirdi. Performansı arttırdı. Amaç 30-40-50 koltuklu bir uçak ailesi oluşturmaktı. Uçak hizmete 1996'da girdi. 2002 yılına kadar da üretildi. Toplam 217 uçak imalat hattından çıktı.

Dornier’in bir sonraki amacı, Amerikan Fairchild ile ortak, alttan kanatlı daha büyük bir yolcu uçağının yapımıydı. 728 ve 928 olarak adlandırılan alttan kanatlı iki farklı uçak tasarlandı. Yolcu kapasitesi bu uçakların 70 ve 90 koltuğa çıkacaktı.

Ancak planlar beklendiği gibi gitmedi. Şirketin Almanya hisselerini elinde bulunduran Daimler Benz şirketi bu pazardan çekilme kararı alınca imalat hattı kapandı. Şirket iflas sürecine girdi.

Projeler ayrıldı. 328 turboprop ve jet motorlu uçakların haklarını elinde bulunduran, işletmedeki uçaklara bakım-yedek parça ve modifikasyon hizmeti veren ayrı bir şirket kuruldu. 328 adını taşıyan bu şirket, geçtiğimiz ocak ayında ABD merkezli Sierra Nevada tarafından satın alındı.

Şirketin yönetimi Londra’da. Operasyon merkezi ise Münih yakınlarındaki Oberpfaffenhofen Havalimanı’nda. Halen şirketin ana görevi, hizmetteki 175 uçağa hizmet vermek.

Sirrea Nevada Corperation (SNC) şirketi komuta-kontrol sistemleri, bunlar hava araçlarına entegrasyonunun yanı sıra Dornier 328 uçaklarıyla ilgili projelere de imza atıyor. Üzerine farklı ekipmanlar koyan şirket, bu uçakları Amerikan Özel Kuvvetleri için modifiye ediyor. Halen Amerikan Hava Kuvvetleri’nin elinde 17 turboprop 328 uçağı bulunuyor.

Şirket daha önceden de Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü için alınan Kingair350 tipi uçağını modifiye ederek insanlı istihbarat uçağı haline getirmişti.

‘HUDs-off to Turkey’


BAE Systems and Turkish technology company Fotoniks have announced an agreement to collaborate on the development and in-region delivery of aircraft display systems. As part of the agreement, Fotoniks will work to integrate BAE Systems’ LiteHUD® Head-Up Display (HUD) into the HUD system for the Hürkuş basic training aircraft. The two companies will further develop the HUD system at the Fotoniks facility in Ankara, Turkey, for the local and regional market.

“In today’s defense and aerospace environment, having the ability to work with an established in-country or in-region company is essential not only for us but for the end user, especially when it comes to repair and sustainment,” said Jim Garceau, deputy general manager of Communications and Control Solutions at BAE Systems. “Working together with Fotoniks, we have the opportunity to bring the HUD system to full-scale production and sell it as an indigenous capability to allied forces across the region.”

Designed using BAE Systems’ patented waveguide technology, LiteHUD is 60 percent smaller by volume and up to 50 percent lighter than a conventional HUD. It has a modular design which allows easy integration into both existing and future cockpits, such as the Hürkuş platform.

“Working collaboratively with BAE Systems locally brings so many benefits to Turkey, including technology transfer, the potential for further job creations, and sustainment within the region,” said Cem Yazicioğlu, general manager at Fotoniks. “Being able to further co-develop this technology in Turkey was important to our decision to work with BAE Systems.”

I had a rather interesting talk with the THK representative at İdef. As you all know the aircraft is from the Italian company Millenium Master that went bankrupt in 2008, THK has bought all the rights of this aircraft (not just license but whole ownership rights!). THK has modified the aircraft a bit, got her flight licenses and is now prowdly showing of her aircraft at İdef.


To my big surprise I learned that THK has sold the aircraft already to 3 Afrikan countries (about 40 production pieces that covers all the production capacity of this year)

So this year THK is busy producing the aircraft for African nations but she is also offering her to the Turkish airforce tender as primary basic trainer.

This is a very good news. This is the first time a Turkish company produces and sells manned aircrafts and particularly to foreign countries. The fact that the design is not an indigenous one leaves entrepreneur wannabes something to take credit for. Anyone?

The best news is that they have created manyfacturing capabilities that can possibly be sourced by other designers. Do we know if they build inhouse or outsource to a third party manifacturer? There was a mention of a company called Epsilon somewhere.

Truthfully, to me this is the biggest news that came out of IDEF'15.

BAE Systems, in partnership with local firm Fotonics, has secured the Turkish Air Force as the launch customer for the LiteHUD system for use on its new Hurkus trainer aircraft, it announced at IDEF 2015.

LiteHUD uses BAE Systems' waveguide technology, with the company claiming the system is 50% lighter and 60% smaller than a conventional heads-up display.

BAE Systems and Turkish SME Fotonics began co-operating on LiteHUD with a memorandum of understanding signed in 2013. This was rewarded with a contract from the prime contractor on the Hurkus programme, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), in January.

In total Fotonics and BAE Systems' contract with TAI covers delivery of LiteHUD for the 15 Hurkus-B advanced turboprop trainer aircraft ordered by the Turkish Air Force in December 2013. The contract between Fotonics and TAI also includes some system spares, while there is an option for a further 40 systems.

Fotonics will now set up a LiteHUD production line at the company's facility in Ankara, with company officials stating they expect the first system to be completed within two years.

The BAE-Fotonics arrangement is not licensed production, however, as the Turkish company has significantly modified the existing BAE Systems LiteHUD design for the Turkish requirement. This includes designing the system's interface panel, line replacement units (LRUs), and the symbology on the HUD itself.

“We are looking for different designs to make Hurkus more perfect. Winglets is one of them," says Ozcan Ertem, head of the company's aircraft group. The addition of winglets enables a trainee pilot to recover more quickly from a spin, he adds.

Spin tests with the Hurkus will begin next month, with a parachute recovery system also being fitted to the aircraft.

So far, TAI has accumulated 235 flight hours with test aircraft TC-VCH and TC-VCI. The company is aiming to secure certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency before the end of this year.

The second phase of the project is the glass cockpit-equipped Hurkus B, which will be produced for the Turkish air force. The type will support the service's current fleet of 40 Korea Aerospace Industries KT-1Ts, based in Izmir. Ankara hopes that the location could become a NATO flight training centre.

According to a contract between TAI and Turkey's undersecretary of Defence Industries, 15 Hurkus Bs will be produced for the Turkish air force by 2018. The company also is looking to produce a close air support version named the Hurkus C.

Powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 engine, the Hurkus has achieved a maximum speed of 295kt (545km/h) and an altitude of 30,000ft during flight tests.
