TURKEY’S STM WINS PAKISTANI NAVAL INFRASTRUCTURE CONTRACT

Turkish defence contractor Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş. (STM) announced that it has won a Pakistan Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) contract for a hydrographic/oceanographic study and port design work in Pakistan.

In its press release, STM states: “Within the scope of the project, the detail design of the port is planned to be done by STM, including hydrographic / oceanographic survey and geological and geotechnical survey studies to meet the needs of the Pakistan Navy.”

The STM contract suggests that a naval infrastructure program is underway, potentially a new naval base or an additive element to Gwadar or Ormara. In 2014, the Navy announced that it will shift its submarine fleet to Jinnah Naval Base in Ormara.

The Pakistan Navy has recently brought several infrastructure programs to fruition. In November, the Navy commissioned a new very low-frequency radio communications base in Sindh. In May, it activated Naval Air Station PNS Siddiq at Turbat, Baluchistan.

STM is one of the Pakistan Navy’s leading suppliers. Its first big-ticket program was the supply of a $80-90 million U.S. 15,600-ton fleet tanker. With Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works’ (KSEW) support, STM launched the ship for sea trials in August 2016.

In June 2016 STM inked a contract with the MoDP to undertake a mid-life upgrade of the Navy’s Khalid-class Agosta 90B submarines. The cumulative value of the contract is $350 million. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in 2020, with the remaining due within one year of one another.

STM is also poised to secure its biggest naval contract yet in the sale of four MILGEM corvettes to Pakistan. In May, the MoDP signed a letter-of-intent with the Turkish government and STM for the ships with the expectation of signing final contracts at the end of June.

This has yet to occur, but the MoDP did list the construction of new corvettes an objective for KSEW in its recent yearbook. If signed, this program would have a cumulative value of $1 billion. The Navy is seeking new corvettes to takeover the patrol and anti-submarine warfare roles of its obsolete Type 21 frigates.

STM may also be collaborating with KSEW in the design of a new miniature diesel-electric submarine (SSK) to replace the Navy’s Cosmos MG110 mini-SSKs. The MoDP listed the construction of a new mini-SSK as an objective for 2016-2017.

Besides the MILGEM, STM is believed to be among the companies the PN is consulting on a possible bid for four to six new fast attack crafts for Gwadar. As per the MoDP, the Pakistan Navy is also planning for a submarine rescue and salvage vessel, which could be of interest to STM.

As if nothing in Turkey is complete without Pak engagement and participation!!!!

A photo from the article "The Dawn of Pakistan: Journey to 1947" in the Dawn (https://www.dawn.com/news/1338270/the-dawn-of-Pakistan)

The most striking feature in this photograph is that it looks so much like Osmanli!!! Although the British were the physical rulers their appearances, dress codes, demeanors etc. look like belonging to the Ottoman Turkey!!!!!

It symbolizes the blood of the millions after millions of Martyrs (Shehit) throughout the history!!! A piece of land become Vatan only when Shehits drench it with their blood!!! By the by, this blood is the Zekat for the Muslim folks for having been blessed with an independent state; hence, it's mandatory....

Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş. (STM), a Turkish company, has recently won a Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) contract from Pakistan Navy. As part of this contract, the Turkish defence firm will be lending its expertise for a port design and hydrographic/oceanographic survey.

In a press release, STM said:

“Within the scope of the project, the detail design of the port will be done by STM, including hydrographic/oceanographic survey and geological and geotechnical survey studies to meet the needs of the Pakistan Navy.”

The contract suggests that Pakistan Navy is working on an infrastructure program which might be linked to the announcement of submarines fleet shift to Jinnah Base Ormara in 2014.

The move comes at a crucial time, as Pakistan Navy is aiming to improve its operations. Its most recent collaboration with the Turkish contractor serves to reinforce this fact as well, with more projects between the two already signed for the foreseeable future.

Recent Projects of Pakistan Navy
The Naval force has recently launched a few projects, which are as follows:

  • A very low-frequency radio communications base in Sindh in November 2016,
  • Naval Air Station PNS Siddiq at Turbat, Baluchistan in May 2017.
Navy’s Recent and Upcoming Contracts with STM
The Turkish company and Pakistan Navy also have more projects in the offing. These include:

  • $80-90 million for a U.S. 15,600-ton fleet tanker in collaboration with Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works’ (KSEW) which was launched in August 2016.
  • MoDP contract worth $350 million for mid-life upgrade of Navy’s Khalid-class Agosta 90B submarines, with the first ship to be delivered in 2020.
  • Letter-of-intent for the sale of four MILGEM corvettes – to replace its obsolete Type 21 frigates – with STM and Turkish Government was signed in May 2017. The total cost for this project is reported to be $1 billion.
  • Replacing Navy’s Cosmos MG110 mini-SSKs with the miniature diesel-electric submarine (SSK) in collaboration with KSEW.
In addition to these, Pakistan Navy is consulting with STM for four to six new fast attack crafts for Gwadar port. The Navy also intends to buy Navy Rescue and Salvage Vessel, which could be a potential opportunity for STM as well.

1)Sounds expensive, might be better to develop the azmat class into a corvette implementing Turkish tech.

2)Does that mean Turkey and Pakistan are working on submarines together?

I hope that this Pak-Turk love is only the beginning and both nations make many such babies in the future XD
:pakistan::rofl:

Pakistan's Agosta are being upgraded by STM and also new small submarine replacement is being done. What else you want. With China already 8 are being developed.

So 6 type21 being replaced by 4 Turkish ships plus one Danish opv? While older fac being replaced by Azmat class ??

One type 21 being refurbished for pmsa

Not sure why do we need to buy naval platforms from outside when we have decades of experience of building naval platforms ourselves. Look at PAF, they are building their own jet now and Navy is still buying stuff from China, Turkey, Holland, etc. etc. Why not settle on a multi role modern design with one partner, build a few with assistance and then gradually build the capability to build the things 100% at home. More technical stuff like Radars, BMS, weapons can be acquired from western world.
