Turkey's Erdogan in row over 'girl martyr' comment on TV

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been criticised after telling a girl in military uniform that she would be honoured if killed while fighting.

"If she's martyred, they'll lay a flag on her," he told the sobbing girl at a televised congress of his AK Party.

His supporters cheered "Chief! Take us to Afrin!", in reference to Turkey's operations against Kurdish fighters in Syria's northern Afrin region.

The speech has been described as "child abuse" and a glorification of death.

In the event, broadcast live on state television, the young girl dressed as a soldier seems to catch the attention of Mr Erdogan, who then invites her to the stage.

"Look what you see here! Girl, what are you doing here? We have our maroon berets here, but maroon berets never cry," he told her, referring to the beret worn by the Turkish Special Operations Forces.

"She has a Turkish flag in her pocket too... If she's martyred, they'll lay a flag on her, God willing," he said during the congress in the southern town of Kahramanmaras on Saturday.

"She is ready for everything, isn't she?" The girl replied: "Yes."

Mr Erdogan then kissed her face and let her go. The girl has not been identified and was not immediately clear why she was wearing a military uniform.

Users on Twitter have condemned Mr Erdogan's speech, with one comparing it to "child abuse".

Another comment read: "It's a shame, it's very bad. She's just a child, you don't wish her dead and you don't say 'God willing' for that!"

He has not yet responded to the criticism.

It is not the first time that Mr Erdogan's comments on martyrdom have caused controversy in Turkey, where every soldier or police officer killed on duty is considered a "martyr", says BBC Turkish's Onur Erem.

Mr Erdogan's opponents criticise him for using the funerals of dead soldiers and children for highly politicised speeches. They also say his own sons evaded military service, but his supporters do not seem to be influenced, our correspondent adds.

.
In Sha Allah means if God wills, not God willing.
The difference is that the first has no connotations with the intention, in classical Arabic, while the latter is said in the way to suggest that they want it to happen.

The Turkish Army has indeed fought for noble causes recently, so if you believe in God, and they continue to fight for the right, then who is killed is a martyr.

So Erdogan isn't wrong here.

Ther is nothing more noble..... Kids should learn it..

Everything is wrong in that. There is a line in militarism where you should stop. Involving little children into death and war is simply wrong. Erdogan is also infamous for seeing battle casualties as mere numbers.

IR is practicing this kind of things in Iran ... the result is that they reached the point which see our martyred troops as mere number and propaganda tools ....

Its very wrong to talk in that way to a kid. Yes she is Turk and she will learn everything when the time comes. The culture and the people in Turkey will teach her everything what she needs to know about the ones who fight in the name of Allah and for the country. Its to early to talk to her in that way. Her mind must not be concerned by the problems of the country and the nation on that little age. Now she must improve herself and learn other things about science, the nature about the religion. Its time to play in pink world and if the world is not pink the ones in her environment must make it pink for her. When the time comes and when she start to understand what is the situation and the problems of her nation then she must think about "With what can I help to my country" and the situation of the gazi and the sehit. His move was very wrong.

In Pakistan we have this too.

Our martyrs are not numbers or statistics like they are in other countries.

They are always remembered and never forgotten. A martyr brings great honor to a tribe/clan or family.

Silly stuff from erdogan involving children.
Turks,Germans and Russians are imo historically the 3 most militaristic and innately dangerous peoples capable of both great feats and brutal atrocities. The germanics destroyed the original rome, the turks the second rome, russia -'the third rome' was almost like divine punishment to keep these 2 in check and cause the downfall of both the ottoman and german empires.(nazi)

go and see america teaching young kids.

every child must learn military training. This will make them understand the sacrifices that are made by their country men and women. of course it is not going to include guns just simple exercise camping like military youth club.

well said ,

This is wrong on so many levels. A cynical use of a child innocence to push your war agenda. Wars have always preyed upon the lives of the young. Because they are young and stupid. But using a 6 years old child who does not know right from wrong , is simply sick.

They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again
But they never will take our sons again
No they never will take our sons again
Johnny I'm swearing to ye

It is not our own choice. Since Ottoman Empire, establishment of Turkish Republic to current, Turks are struggling with countless terrorists/coup lover puppets and their state supporters in one of the most strategic location of MiddleEast. It is the concequences of some state’s field games to keep Turkiye in a check with blood, While we are trying to stand on our knees to rise on top. If some people from outside didn’t call Turks like “dangerous” like you do, we couldn’t survive in this geography. It is not about that Turks are dangerous for friends in our nature but real enemies. It is your choice to see us like that. I have some “good” news for the people like you. Turks will be more dangerous than ever, since Industry is developing more strategic crafts/tools/assets that purchasing them from abroad is almost impossible. It means your checks over Turkey to prevent “uncontrolled rise of strength” in region is mostly destroyed...

Kız çocuğunun ağlaması üzerine “İşte bizim bordo berelilerimiz de var. Ama bordo bereliler ağlamaz” diyen Erdoğan şöyle devam etti: “Evet JÖH, yarbay, bordo bereli. Türk bayrağı da cebinde. Şehit olursa inşallah bayrağı da örtecekler. Her şeyi hazır. Değil mi? Hadi!” diyerek kız çocuğunu yerine gönderdi.

as the kid cried erdogan said "we have our bordo berileler (bordoaux barets). but bordoaux barets dont cry" than he said further "yes JÖH (gandermerie special forces) , bordoaux barets have their turkish flags in their pockets. if they die for country so god will they will cover them with the flag. everything is ready, isnt it? Hadi go." and he send the girl away..

there is no if she is martyred.. this is a lie from german media..
