Turkey set to invade Syria; US to remove forces from area

By MARK OSBORNE Oct 7, 2019, 12:05 AM ET

Turkey is set to invade Syria, as the country had been threatening in recent months, with the U.S. saying it will remove all of its forces from the "immediate area," according to the White House.

The news came late Sunday after President Donald Trump spoke to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by phone earlier in the day.

"Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria," the White House said in a statement late Sunday. "The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial 'Caliphate,' will no longer be in the immediate area."

The White House also confirmed that Turkey will take possession of all captured ISIS fighters from the past two years.

"The United States Government has pressed France, Germany, and other European nations, from which many captured ISIS fighters came, to take them back, but they did not want them and refused," the U.S. said in its statement. "The United States will not hold them for what could be many years and great cost to the United States taxpayer."

Trump and Erdogan agreed to meet at the White House in November, Turkish state media reported, though the White House did not mention that in its statement.

Negotiators from the U.S. and Turkey had reached an agreement Aug. 7 to create a safe zone in northeastern Syria in order to secure the territory once held by the Islamic State.

The deal came after Erdogan had threatened to take up an offensive against the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces that had helped eliminate ISIS. Turkey considers the Kurdish forces -- the PKK and YPG -- terrorist organizations.

But the agreement was only a stopgap with Erdogan repeating those calls in recent weeks.

Not so fast, I predict trump will buckle under pressure, no Turk invasions going to happen

Funny how you have Russian and Chinese posters defending ypg terrorists.

Either way the Turkish army is going to send your beloved ypg women fighters to hell.

If you love them so much be our guest and join them. More bullets for the TSK to put holes into.

I curious why you are expecting a happy ending after invading Syria.

. . .
Majority of Muslims love Turkey and Turks. Hence why a lot of them support this apart from Arabs and Kurds.
Are Arabs not Muslims? Lol. As far as I remember they are at the origin of Islam itself and they are the ones who spread Islam to you guys and all over the region, from the middle East to south Asia and far off South east Asia. One might even say that if not for the Arabs most of you will still retain your original traditions, religions, culture and customs.
Moreover , I'm not sure we can say that all Muslims (even excluding the Arabs and Kurds) support Turkey's invasion. There are people who are against it depending on their point of view and also interests. I'm not even sure the Iranians are happy with this.

Iran is not happy. Putin sent military to the front line, Iran warned Erdogan. I think Trump will take back his bullshit on twitter, otherwise he will lose more voters. Putin will not offer Afrin for free, instead Putin will take it back and cooperate with YPG. Russia has relationship with YPG as well. US played very badly in Syria.

Iran warned Erdogan

Iran is nothing .... FSA beat ASSAD Regime+Iran and in 2015 RUHANI called helping from PUTIN to save their pathetic forces

btw half of Iran is TURK
If Turkey and Azerbaijan want , half of Iran will be belonged to Azerbaijan
Iran can not fight with Turkey

Russia can not lose Turkey for ugly smelly poor useless Pkk/Ypg terrorists
Turkey never will allow Pkk/Ypg terror corridor in N.Syria , Russia or The US doesnt matter Nobody can fight with Turkey in Syria

Im aware of Iran's stance and their interests in Syria. They have very different interests (even from Russia) from what they want in Syria. Reason I mentioned them in this regard. The Syrian conflict is a very complex one, with lots of actors and players and an intertwined network of allies and rivals (sometimes they cooperate and ally with each other and then fight each other as well). Some people see things in a very simple way. They don't know that there is no black and white in this conflict. Lol

As for US/western powers , I don't know if I will say they adopted a bad strategy in Syria. As I mentioned earlier , you have to know that the US/UK/France (Syria's former colonial master) didn't really have much interests in Syria and as such their stake there was almost negligible, apart from say France who to a lesser extent had some significant investments and links to Syria. However most western powers didn't have much interests or even trade/investment in Syria. So they didn't really care much about the country. This is unlike say other large resourceful/wealthy Arab states like EGYPT, KSA, Gulf States, Lybia , Iraq or even Algeria/Morocco etc where western powers have much more stake/investments and interests . As such western powers didn't really invest much in supporting Syrian opposition like they should have done or getting involve early on during the uprisings to broker a deal and avoid civil war . They only reluctantly got involved significantly after use of chemical weapons by Assad and rise of ISIS which threatened western powers a la Alqaeda, without these factors there won't be any western forces or direct involvement Syria at all. In fact even with this limited presence most western countries are not even happy with this limited support, they will rather we ignored the country totally. From this you can see that the West never really bothered much about Syria (whether Assad stays or not ). Believe me if Western powers REALLY WANTED to remove Assad they would have easily done that during the first year of this conflict like they did with Gaddafi, by intervening directly to remove him. They don't have much interests in Syria as such they don't really care much who rules the country. It's secondary to the West. Obviously they wouldn't mind if he left but it's not that important for the West to the extent of committing themselves and taking on the responsibility to remove him themselves. I'm sorry but the Syrian people and regional powers will have to fight this one themselves.

I agree that it's because of Russia's massive military involvement and support that Assad and Iranian forces with their proxies were able to really turn the tide against the FSA and other rebel groups. That would have been impossible without significant direct Russian involvement. However, I wouldn't say Iranian forces and their Shi'a militias are nothing. They have been the main ground fighting force on the ground battling the rebels. While Russia has been providing massive air/logistical support, missiles, tanks, armoured vehicles, etc along with proving training to these forces and equipping them to better deal with the rebels. Russia has also been instrumental in sending special forces to assist in important raids on critical targets etc. So yes Russia's support has been crucial and the determining factor in saving Assad. However, Iranian forces and their militias have also played a role in shoring up Assad forces(or what remained after many defected to the opposition).

Seems you are quite the ultra nationalistic one to be making such claims. :D

Russia can not lose Turkey for ugly smelly poor useless Pkk/Ypg terrorists
Russia doesn't need to "GAIN" Turkey per se. They can achieve their objectives in Syria (i.e having a client state and puppet to maintain their military bases and assess to the region from where they can project power in the Mediterranean sea thereby also challenging western powers with bases and presence in this area)with or without Turkey to be honest. So it's true that ideally they will want to have a neutral Turkey or ideally a friendly Turkey by their side to cause more friction/divide in NATO, but it's not like they absolutely need Turkey. Especially considering the fact that they believe they have already won the war and the worse dangers they could face is long gone. So they have the upper hand now and as such they don't need to make much concessions if they don't want to. So they have far more bargaining chips unfortunately.

Turkey never will allow Pkk/Ypg terror corridor in N.Syria , Russia or The US doesnt matter Nobody can fight with Turkey in Syria
That's a tall claim. I don't think anybody on here will agree with you on this one. Even the most die hard Turkish fan. :P

Open history books and read about history of Iran
Iran was ruled by the Turks for over 900 years between 960s and 1925

in 1925 The British helped Persians ( Shah Pahlavi ) to destroy Turkish Dynasty in Iran
today there are 35-40 million Turks in Iran ..... Southern Azerbaijan is a region in northwest Iran
Turkey has 82 million population and Azerbaijan has 10 million population

Turkey and Azerbaijan can take 1/3 of Iran even without war

The US , Israel and Saudi Arabia are dreaming about it .. ( a possible war between Turkey and Iran )

That's a tall claim. I don't think anybody on here will agree with you on this one. Even the most die hard Turkish fan

Russia can not fight with Turkey in IDLIB
The US can not fight with Turkey in N.Syria

so I am saying again Turkey never will allow Pkk/Ypg terror corridor in N.Syria , Russia or The US doesnt matter Nobody can fight with Turkey in Syria
