Turkish military operations against the Kurdistan Workers Party PKK have continued unabated, despite a recent call for disarmament by group jailed leader, Abdullah Ocalan. On March 6, 2025, Turkish forces killed 26 Kurdish militants in operations conducted in northern Iraq and Syria. This escalation comes just days after Ocalan urged the PKK to lay down its arms and disband, marking a significant shift in the group stance after decades of armed struggle against the Turkish state.

Ocalan call for disarmament was made through a written statement delivered by representatives of Turkey's pro-Kurdish political party, this move was seen as a potential turning point in the conflict, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths since the 1980s, the PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S and the EU, initially sought to establish an independent Kurdish state but later shifted its focus to advocating for Kurdish rights within Turkey.

Despite the PKK declaration of a ceasefire, Turkey has rejected it as a genuine offer, viewing it as a tactical maneuver, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized that the government would continue its anti-PKK operations unless the group fully disbands and surrenders its weapons unconditionally, Turkish National Defense Ministry stated that the PKK has "no choice but to dissolve itself" as it has reached the end of its lifespan.

Turkey military operations against PKK have been ongoing, with recent strikes targeting PKK positions in northern Iraq and Syria, these operations are part of Turkish longer strategy to eliminate what it considers terrorist threats along its borders, Turkish military has been conducting cross-border operations in Iraq for years, targeting PKK hideouts and fighters.

Situation is further complicated by the involvement of other Kurdish groups, such as the American backed Syrian Democratic Forces SDF, Turkey has demanded that all Kurdish armed groups, including SDF, lay down their weapons, reflecting Ankara concerns about potential for these groups to support PKK activities, international community including U.S and EU has welcomed Ocalan call for disarmament as a step towards peace, but the path forward remains uncertain due to Turkish skepticism and ongoing military actions.

Turkey insistence on unconditional surrender and ongoing military operations suggests that a peaceful resolution may be difficult to achieve in near term. But Ocalan call for disarmament offers a glimmer of hope for peace. International community support for disarmament efforts could be crucial in facilitating negotiations and ensuring that any peace process is sustainable. Conflict between Turkey and PKK is still complex with both sides facing significant challenges in reaching a lasting resolution.

PKK said we are announcing ceasefire. Turkey said no we are not! Turkey wants unconditional surrender. I don't call that being chutiya.
