ISTANBUL. The Turkish military has retired all 40 generals and admirals on trial for plotting to overthrow the Muslim-led government, Turkish officials said, in the latest move by the government to tame the once indomitable army.

The Supreme Military Council decision was announced on the official website of the Turkish General Staff. The 40 commanders have been jailed in connection with a terrorist network that prosecutors maintain conspired to unseat the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Analysts said the decision to retire the high-ranking military officials, approved by President Abdullah Gul, was the latest step by the government to root out its secular opponents

Armed forces Job is to protect the country not run it if these guys were so interested in becoming prime minister they could have easily become politician and run in elections instead they decided to use their power and weapons given to them by same Government and over throw elected Government.

Are you so blind? This whole thing is a show. Put some 5 minutes effort in and google whether Turkey is more democratic today or not. The good economy is not accomplishment of the AKP, cheetah. You're talking about democracy and yet we have so many journalists in jail and doing not better democracy wise than before the AKP. The media is under control. There is massive pressure on the media, international newspapers break the news of Turkey moving heavy equipment towards the Syrian border hours before the Turkish media is allowed to. In fact you can observe how the English editions of Hürriyet or Zaman report such stuff while they dont on the Turkish editions.

Read a little bit about Erdogan/AKP vs. the Dogan Holding. The Dogan Holding is the owner of some very important newspapers/tv stations and the AKP decided to put a massive fine for allegedly tax fraud on them, a fine so massive that it would had forced him to sell his assets.
