Turkey’s top procurement panel decided Wednesday to order five more CH-47F Chinook heavy transport helicopters, the government announced.

SSM said the committee also decided to place an order for five CH-47F Chinook heavy transport helicopters. This will be a follow-on order to a previous deal involving six platforms.

Turkey is a partner of the United States in ensuring peace and stability in the region. It is vital to the U.S. national interest to assist our North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defense capability that will contribute to an acceptable military balance in the area. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives.

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its primary roles are troop movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) the helicopter is faster than contemporary 1960s utility and attack helicopters

We need these helicopters fast. We don't know if there will be a need for a rapid deployment in our southern border so these 11 Chinooks will take our troop deployement capabilities to another level.

1 Heavy lift chopper to be assigned to Turkey’s presidency

One of five heavy lift choppers that will be ordered by Ankara will be allocated to the Turkish presidency, daily Cumhuriyet has reported.

The Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) decided in its latest meeting last week, convened under Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, to order five CH-47F Chinook helicopters, in addition to the six already ordered. While four of the new orders came from the Turkish General Staff, one came from the Defense Ministry, which is expected to allocate the chopper to the newly constructed presidential palace, dubbed the “Ak Saray” in reference to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and “saray,” which means palace.

The SSİK, which is described as “the main decision making mechanism of the system” on the website of the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, is composed of the prime minister, the chief-of-staff, and the defense minister.

Produced by U.S. space and security company Boeing, the CH-47F Chinook aircraft is described as a “multi-mission, heavy-lift transport helicopter,” on its own website. The choppers’ primary mission is moving troops, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield, while its secondary missions include medical evacuation, disaster relief, search and rescue, aircraft recovery, firefighting, parachute drops, heavy construction and civil development.

Ankara had signed a contract worth nearly $400 million in 2011 with Boeing to buy six CH-47 Chinooks, which are expected to be delivered in 2016.

You're probably right because it is too big to land anywhere and you don't need to lift anything or carry that many people at one time. No country is using helicopters like that to transport officials.
